It's also a jab at their statement because they most likely *would* keep recordings to further identify people and help the algorithm. I'm studying in China, people just think of it as security measures for a safer society. Personally it doesn't bother me, I'm not doing anything wrong but when I suddenly traveled accross the country for a week and didn't check in at the hotel where I was staying (it was under my Chinese friend's name so I didn't provide ID) I was surprised af that they knew I was there haha, the police came looking for me the day after. Not for any bad reason, I just didn't know foreigners always have to check into hotels regardless of whether or not the reservation is under their name. I just had to give my name and passport number. I'm not gonna lie, I feel a million times more comfortable walking out at night here than back home in America in my neighborhood, my neighborhood is sketchy af and there's always thefts... Hell, someone once decided to burn a stolen car literally in front of my house 😅😆
