Of all the amazing content I get to see, THIS is one of the videos I've really been waiting for. My ACD has a reactivity history and is reactive around me, but things are much improved (but always a work in progress). He has gone after dogs that he's played with, when they just roll up on us when he's hovering around me. I taught him a VALUABLE command which is the "Away" command - it directs him to get away from me, up to about 4-5 ft, until I invite him back in. I used this as a "punishment" for when he was being corrected in the home, like you say Joel out of the circle of love (and fun times). But it is also so helpful in these situations, lots of dogs milling about and your reactive dog tends to wind up closer and closer to you until they build in an unhealthy scenario. It also forces them to go amongst the dogs and experience them, with you keeping a watchful eye over everyone. It's also nice just being able to tell your dog to get away from you if they are too much in your space or need to get away from a spot for safety.

19:53 Her woof and tail wag almost seem indicative of her being pleased with herself for staying composed amongst so much activity. My dog gets extremely proud and literally jumps for joy when she completes a certain trick that's really hard for her. This somehow reminds me of that behavior.

I also have a GSD and can relate to the weirdness. He’s funny with all strangers, human and canine. I had to get super hard core as the boss in order to manage him. Less love. More strict. That’s what my trainer told me. Mommy issues! It’s a GSD thing!!!

I’ve had this happen a few times and just sharply yell “no!” and clap at the dogs similar to what Joel did. It’s worked with big Rottweilers and German Shepards.

Great video and I can't wait for the second part to see how it will unfold! My first dog, a GSD mix, had the same problem when I petted other dogs or when the other dog just came close to me. And it was so annoying, so unrelaxing, so stressful! I showed him that I wasn't pleased with this behavior and put him in a sit/stay with a strict, clear and unpleasant tone, so he knew it was not ok. And for the time being he behaved, but when I released him, he still wanted to tell the other dog to stay away from me. Only with increasing age this behavior has diminished. However, I never used the method of putting him out of the circle of trust. Because it is exactly as you said. It is not a trustworthy behavior. I like the idea behind it.

Think about your dog not letting you pet another dog like you would your boyfriend or girlfriend not letting you shake hands with someone, or talk to someone. (No shady stuff....Just shaking hands or talking.) It means the dog thinks they control you. They are the pack leader, as Ceasar Milan would say it. Your dog should be fine with ANYTHING you do, that isn't causing the dog pain. YOU have to be the pack leader. Joel says it all the time, "Just be in charge." That's what you have to do. Be in charge. Another excellent video sir.

My very first gut feeling at the first meet with prince was that she was nervous and a bit afraid without her mom. The ear flick, side eye, and hunkering down to get her backside away from him. I could be wrong though.

I love the Joelisms 😆 they're so descriptive! "Badness" or "horribleness" totally make sense in the way you use them lmao we need a quirky short book on your Joelisms! Beckman's dog training dictionary 🤣I'd read daily for an uplifting laugh! This dog just doesn't want doggy friends....sometimes that is their personality, especially GSD or guarding breeds I find-absolutely possible to have her be neutral, which would be a good goal at 5 years old. She does not seem to show interest however, I feel the right dog and situation she may get a friend...can you do another with happy go lucky puppies under a year? Male and female. Would love to see how she reacts....if she ignores, corrects out of bring annoyed, or joins some play? Do a follow up with more dogs please! I have a feeling she has a VERY particular type of dog she would enjoy. You have the means to find out!

How do we do meets with a dog who is just so over excited to meet other dogs like mine who is boisterous but also a bit nervous, so meets get a bit confusing for him. He's all over the place and I do t let him off leash because I'm scared he reacts badly.

Thank you so much for your videos. I'm practicing a lot of what you teach. My mups have gotten way better. However, (lol always a but) I have a 14-month-old German shepherd pit mix that tends to be very rough with her playing with other dogs at the dog park. she grabs on to scruffs and collars and holds on. how to stop this behavior. It would be super nice not to have her do this.

My dog was growling and snarling at another dog it was a unneutered male bull dog and he kept coming up to her at the dog park and she wasn’t having it I had to grab her and he was still coming up and it looked like she was going to bite him but she was good with the other dogs just that one. I was wondering if you had any ideas why? Oh and by the way my dog is a 2 year old mix breed

Few dogs out of 23, they get too exited when vehicle or someone outside. Barking and bolted out through the house and doggie door backyard. which cause other doggies to get exited and loud. Tried to yell to make them stop but my throat is hurting. How can I train them to stop?

Any trainer I've spoken to says muzzels are bad and cause problems, I'd like to try a muzzle though. I have a dog that would hate it and do everything to get out of it but I also want to do meets safely.

Is the muzzle comfortable for the dog? Right size, material, type etc.. My dog hated the muzzle and always tried to get out of it. We found out it was simply uncomfortable for her, pushed her snout a little. When we changed it she stopped trying to get out it. Just my experience )

What should I do when we meet a dog that she doesn't know? She was quite and looked at the dog, I tried to get her to not react at the dog by turning her head away. It worked well until the other dog came much closer. My dog have gotten much, much better when I use the gentle leader but can't get her to stop barking when she sees a dog close bye. She has been barking before when she has seen a dog, now she is much better thanks to your teknik. I just wonder what I am doing wrong when she reacts to dog coming closer it doesn't help correct her with the leash. She has the gentle leader on and she jumps up with her pws and barks. She wants to chase birds and everything that moves, now she is not changing every bird. Please help us 🙏

Yeah, my stay means you're safe, nothing bad is going to happen to you, I'll come back to release you. Think the dog might be used to releasing herself. If you notice Joel almost never lets the dog release themselves. He almost always uses his ok or a release word to let the dog know clearly when it's over. Hope that helps.

I just have to say, you have to say ok to spell O K A Y. So each time you spell it you are saying the cue. Most dogs don't notice but I have noticed a few that have.
