Jordan was a team with a cult following. A following that I'm certain had NOTHING to do with the glamour models that used to knock about with them for promo. Nothing to do with that at all! Wow, by modern standards some stuff has not aged well...
But it was sad to see them go from potential championship winners to tootling round at the back with Minardi, hiring pay driver after pay driver and only getting a podium because there were six cars on the grid. But, at least Eddie got to end it on his terms like Ken did.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

I was a member of the Jordan fan club, and got to meet Eddie, Jean Alesi, Takuma Sato and Justin Wilson, god bless his soul, at a Silverstone test day. We had pit lane access at lunch time and a Jordan factory tour during the day too, as well as lunch with the team in the hospitality suites above the old pit garages. Was bloody brilliant! Jordan really were the F1 team who made access to F1's backstage accessible to the"normal" F1 fan. Thanks Aidan for another great video!

As a side note I learnt from EJ's and DC's podcast, when Eddie signed the engine deal with Ford, Gerhard Berger pulled an amazing prank on him. Eddie and Berger were going to be flying home together with Ron Dennis, and so Berger, who was working for BMW and having just seen the Jordan-Ford deal, made some fake documents showing that BMW were going to be supplying engines to Minardi. Berger then put these documents in his briefcase and during the flight, told Ron to encourage Eddie to look in the briefcase when Berger went away. Berger then left to go to the cockpit, and sure enough, Ron tells Eddie to snoop, and so Eddie finds the documents and is mortified that his biggest rivals now have a deal with arguably the best engine in F1 at the time. When Berger comes back, Eddie starts asking about any potential BMW deals etc., while trying to not give away the fact that he had been snooping. Berger plays along and tells Eddie that actually, we are planing to supply engines to a smaller team. At this point, Eddie is practically begging Berger to consider giving the BMW engines to Jordan, even though, as Berger points out, he had just been om TV hyping up their new partnership with Ford. Berger then plays along even further and tells Eddie to ready a presentation or something of the sort in a very short period of time and gives him a bunch of people to call, including Bernie Ecclestone. Eddie then works tirelessly on this matter for quite some time, before realizing that Berger had played him and resulting in a very angry phone call to Berger. Berger tells the story way better, go check out the Formula for Success podcast if you haven't

Yeah, I remember Eddie saying he didn't mind and looking back it's certainly not the worst thing to ever happen. But at the time it was tough to swallow. The 90s were a bit of a purple patch for Irish sport, in football, athletics boxing at least. So, it would have been another great moment for Irish sport. I think what stuck in my craw the most was that the organisers didn't even have a copy of the Irish anthem on hand and so reckoned God Save the Queen was the next best option. Its like a perennial underdog English team getting an unlikely 1-2 and the event organisers play La Marseillaise because they did have a copy of God save the Queen/King. Like I said, certainly not the worst thing to ever happen, but a memorable and very unfortunate mishap.

Both my parents were from Mayo and we grew up in Birmingham. When Hill won I was jumping around the place saying he had won. And both my mom and dad came in to watch the podium, and then GSTQ. Neither were happy about it, think my Dad said "typical" as whenever anyone Irish did something well they were British. A bit like what happens with Andy Murray. Still though, after that like you say it was an imperial phase of Irish sport. Don't know about your home, but when Keane walked from Saipan it was like a civil war in the house. From an improbable high to a crushing low. It was a sad decline and a sad exit that brought mixed emotions. Eddie was as devious and underhanded as Mr. E at times, and could be irritating as all hell, but nostalgia heals all wounds. This was one of my OG's - one of the teams from when I began with F1, of which only Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Sau-Kic-Aud remain. The nostalgia personally extends to tenuous childhood links, Eddie hails from Bray, Co. Wicklow. The Best Seaside Town... In The World. Childhood holiday heaven. Jordan's yellow was unforgettable - an great example of identity branding, initially just another ciggie packet, but with the hornets, the snakes and the sharks, it broke away from Benson and Hedges and became Jordan Yellow. And of course, there's the tricolour tinted glasses - this was Ireland's Team. That of course meant my grandad followed them. Any success, from one point to a victory were celebrated in the press in the Emerald Isle. I still remember fondly the roller-coaster of 1999, of Frentzen and Ireland's Greatest Year, of a news feature on pubs being packed to cheer on Irvine and Jordan. When Australia 2000 came around, the front page of the main TV listings mag, the RTE Guide, had on the front cover "F1 2000 Season Preview - Is This Eddie's Year?" Only if you mean his year for getting the wind kicked out of him. When Midland came in, I remember Ted Kravitz made a running gag about them being Irish-Russian, and back when Ted's Notebook was an ITV website column rather than a show - remember that? - he referred to them exclusively in those terms; Jordanin, Jordanski, Jordanov, etc. I thought it amusing, at least. Eddie did a lot for the country and for the sport. Emotionally this team will always be his, no matter how long Lawrence Stroll's name remains on the door. Suil Eile.

Big Jordan fan so loved the attention they get. I have always wondered (and I imagine there's no actual concrete answer) WHY Frentzen was dismissed in 2001. Because the story it was to make room for Sato really does not compute because Trulli was leaving the team anyways, there was going to be a seat open (Both Trulli and Briatore have confirmed that conversations regarding Trulli move to Benetton (later Renault) were in progress from like San Marino onwards) so that's where you put Sato. Frentzen was essentially replaced by Fisichella which I'm fine with but that never the story that gets told. It's a minor point because the Honda deal didn't work out long term (BAR was willing to give them far more power and regardless of results Honda was going to go that way imo) and as much as I respect Frentzen as a driver he doesn't fix any of the issues that kick into high gear as 2003 goes on because simply put MONEY! I suppose there's a very small chance that Frentzen old Merc connections do something but unlikely.

However, what I didn't take into account before wearing it in high school was the Benson & Hedges logo. Needless to say, I avoided serious trouble, but I couldn't wear the jacket or jersey to school after that. Keep in mind this was in Texas in 1998, so it also stuck out like a sore thumb because F1 wasn't visible at the time.

The downfall years were painful and sad to watch, I feel like BAR getting the Honda engine deal over Jordan was the beginning of the end, I remember being gutted when BAR got the full factory deal. Still some great memories through the late 90's

Great vid. Makes me wonder all of a sudden: when was the last privateers-only podium? My mind jumps to Nurburgring ‘99, but that can’t be the last, right?

Even with that podium you could argue Stewart was the ford factory racing team hidden in plain sight but I think that was the last all privateer podium What would you define as a privateer would a team like BAR fit (pre Honda taking a stake in them) or even a team like McLaren technically from 2010-14 on a higher scale of things (Mercedes has sold their stock it was just an engine agreement by then) or RB at various points (pre 2010 and 2016-18)

I think you might actually be right. But like already mentioned it depends on what you class Stewart as. Or Prost considering they had nationalised French companies coming out their deriere

I just found out this week, that EJ and DC have a podcast together. Two episodes are here on youtube yet, one where EJ and Gerhard Berger curse at each other lovingly, while DC pours gasoline into the fire and one where EJ and Bertrand Gachot curse at each other loss lovingly and DC fuels the fire. EJ screams a lot. Quiet entertaining.

The Mugen and Honda relationship has always been very weird - from what I understand the factory actually blocked Mugen from competing further in F1 after 2000, they (Mugen) wanted to continue. Also, apparently there was a plan for Brabham to run Mugen V8s in 1989 but it never happened for the same reasons - Honda corporate blocked that one.

Pointing to the end of the Peugeot works deal as the turning point for the teams fortune is correct imo. Whilst they had success with Mugen they end up getting messed around badly by Honda, and arguably Honda got their comeuppance with how BAR/Honda ended up before pulling out. What might have been had they backed Jordan over Craig Pollock’s flash and unsubstantiated promises.

I'd love to know more about Tom Walkinshaw, given how his name turns up in so many different and unexpected places, and Flavio needs a look just on the basis of what I remember from his Wikipedia page. And there are so many other people I've never heard of that I'd love to learn about.

In Ireland, we'd call Eddie Jordan "a chancer", That can be a negative or a positive. an insult or a term of endearment. Our soccer team failed to qualify for France 98 and Euro 2000 and the rugby team went out of the 1999 World Cup early on to Argentina which at the time was a little bit shameful, so Jordan were a really big deal in Irish sports for a wee while. I bought 2 Jordan tshirts. The quality and durability of their merch was unreal. Very cool and well made stuff! I was delighted when the 3 new teams tried to break into F1 in 2010 and sad when they all died out not that long afterwards. I think it's great for F1 that they seem to have finally cracked America and that they have decided to race mostly in countries where Democracy is a joke or a threat to the regime and Red Bull can wipe out 20% of the grid on a whim if they leave the sport. I just can't be arsed watching it anymore (No more listening to Crofty! Yay!) and I stuck in there for as long as i could. Hopefully the WEC will give me my racing fix in 2024!

@@AidanMillward I can find pretty much anything racing-wise, it's more about how many hours I have to take it all in! I'd watch it all if I could! I'm very quickly working my way through the 2022 Formula E season, I know who won the title but it's all on youtube and I'm watching it since race 1 of season 1 ( I was hooked after Nico Prost and Heidfeld crashed on the last corner of the last lap in race 1 in China while in 1st and 2nd place and Lucas Di Grassi stole the race from distant 3rd and celebrated like he'd really done something! Heidfeld never actually got to win an FE race and is retired now!) I get a lot of the semi final stuff from rugby fans on youtube. i'll just have to console myself with back to back 6 nations titles and there's some games vs South Africa this Summer. :D

Great video, what always surprises me especially with Eddie Jordans reputation for deal making is why when it became clear that Honda were only going to go with BAR that Eddie didn't sniff around the other engine manufacturers that were thinking of venturing into F1 as he new the cosworths were not competitive even working with the likes of Toyota until he could get something sorted, Audi were always sniffing around as were Porsche and if memory serves GM had a pretty good V10 being used at Le Mans that could have been converted to use in F1 especially to rub Ford the wrong way. But they and Minardi, Ligier/Prost, Arrows, Tyrrell are all huge misses now, f1 is to clinical risk averse all show and no go god forbid it rain to much, or even a retirement from pushing the car the inch of its life. Massive change up is needed bring back Eddie!

Eddie Jordan, Ken Tyrrell and Frank Williams were part of the charm of F1 and in my opinion it's sad that that has gone from F1. These days it's all and only about money and quite naturally that means only teams with deep pockets, like manufacturer teams, are left. The new budget caps don't do much, as driver salaries are NOT included, meaning that drivers as Verstappen and Hamilton are getting paid more than €40 million per year to race, which also in my opinion is ridiculous.

Minardi and Jordan were supported by pretty much everyone, even if they had a "proper" favourite team. Every point scored by Minardi was celebrated like a win, and until '98, pretty much the same thing for Jordan but for a few years. During those years, any non-scoring race was considered to be a bad race, regardless of what had gone on on track. The funny thing is that EJ was far more popular as a team owner than he is as a pundit (or was - he seems to have packed that in). He's also a _lot_ richer now and could probably buy AM! Not sure how he got the money, but as they ask, "How do you make a million in F1?" "Start with a billion." 😅 I'm not sure if any of you youngsters are aware, but EJ, with, I believe, a bunch of mechanics (please correct me if you know) had a band, and after the British GP (maybe others?), they'd be on stage and playing a lot of rock for thousands of F1 fans to dance - and probably drink - to. Damon was in the band. He's a great guitarist. Played lead IIRC (I could be wrong. I never got to see them live). He played with George Harrison, and I think they were in a recorded session together. Those were the days when the smaller teams in particular were more open to entertaining the crowd. Tis a shame that with the budget cap, each team is having to hunker down and keep themselves to themselves.
1🥺🎉 #thankyou
