Bea Arthur's funny impression of Mae West at her Television Academy Hall of Fame induction with close friend Angela Lansbury.
Beatrice Arthur (born Bernice Frankel; May 13, 1922 - April 25, 2009) was an American actress, comedian, singer, and activist.
Arthur began her career on stage in 1947. She won the 1966 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for playing Vera Charles in Mame. She went on to play Maude Findlay on the sitcoms All in the Family (appearing 1971-72) and Maude (1972-78), as well as Dorothy Zbornak on the sitcom The Golden Girls (1985-92). She won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1977 for Maude and 1988 for The Golden Girls. Her film appearances include Lovers and Other Strangers (1970) and Mame (1974). In 2002, she starred in the one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends. An obituary described Arthur as “the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star ….”

One can see that Bea was already suffering the side effects of lung cancer but she bravely tried to conceal it. She was an unbelievably great actress, especially on a comedianne role and was in a class of her own. Her very distinctive husky voice was what set her apart from the rest. RIP legend.

Angela Lansbury passed away today at the age of 96. A very sad day. Seven decades of wonderful entertainment to the world. I was lucky to see her in the original Broadway production of Sweeney Todd. Phenomenal show and performance! After the show I wrote to Miss Lansbury and Len C. They were kind enough to send me autographs. The world mourns the loss of Ms Lansbury but cherishes the vast and unparalleled body of work that she left us to enjoy forever. Rest in peace! 🙏♥️

I have never seen anyone with such impeccible comic timing. Bea will wait face frozen, and wait, and wait and - wait with barely an eyebrow twitch until every single human in that audience is completely at her mercy before delivering that line. It actually takes tremendous courage and supreme confidence for an actor to allow the silence between the lines to do the heavy lifting. Only Jack Benny had that same gift.

Two actors of enormous talent. Bea really loved Angie and she loved her back. There’s a story when in New York, a budding actor was behind the pair of them in line to watch a movie and discreetly sat behind them in the movie theatre, only to hear them roar with laughter at all the dirtiest jokes. Two wonderful, wonderful girls with star quality that you just don’t see today. May the world remember the rare talent of them both.

@10293
@10293 Жыл бұрын
@@deepblack2193 Bea was a very shy and gruff woman. Many have said that she was nice but she was guarded and a bit of an Iron Lady. Betty on the other hand was a bubbly, outgoing person who could win anyone and everyone’s hearts. I believe that an emmy tv legends interview of a golden girls producer thought that those ladies were just like oil and water, just two different personalities. Betty would interact with the GG Audience between takes instead of preparing for the next scene and Bea thought it was frivolous. I don’t think Bea ever hated Betty, I just believe that Bea could find Betty a little tiring because of her higher energy and maybe even envied Betty’s easy confidence because of how shy Bea was.

I feel Bea and Angela saw a lot of themselves in each other. How they were never the main character, or the “pretty face”, that they cared more about the quality of their performance than the notoriety, how they were always respected more on stage then in front of the camera. They were both successful throughout their career, despite being women of a certain age. How they knew their value, both as an actor and an individual. Two of the most underrated actresses of the past century. Both on stage, TV and film.

Angela Lansbury was a looker in her youth. I was watching an old MGM movie and I kept saying "Who's that girl?!! She is gorgeous. She looks like she could be related to Angela Lansbury." The credits rolled at the end and sure enough it WAS Angela Lansbury. Both aged gracefully but I came to know Angela Lansbury on Murder She Wrote as a kid. Seeing her in her 20s knocked me out!

I've loved Bea for a while now, and this was the first time watching this. She aged *hard* near the end.... But when she got up to speak, barely an extra creak or two. Slower yes, but still the power. And doing a Mae West impression at her age? She killed it. And extra points of course-- because when Mae West started acting she was considered old. Wild how times change.
