Brian Wilson was the co-founder of the seminal 60s rock group The Beach Boys. As the leader and creative genius behind the band’s many hits, Brian Wilson has influenced generations of pop stars, including Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Taylor Hawkins and other pop royalty.
Award-winning documentary filmmaker Brent Wilson joins us for the second time to discuss his new film, Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road. The film follows Brian on a journey, both literally and figuratively, of Brian’s old stomping grounds and memories, which include over a half-century of battling mental illness. Brent explains how he was able to bring a new angle to the rock legend that is Brian Wilson, all while exploring what it means to be human.
“Brian Wilson doesn't think in a linear fashion, so he's not going to start with the beginning of his life…and we ended up with 70 hours of footage in the car.” - Brent Wilson

About 20 years ago, I guitarist friend of mine had a solo acoustic gig at an outdoor cafe in Newport RI. After he was through, he got a good round of applause and one of the audience members give him a double thumbs up on his way out. As my friend headed backstage to pack up, one of the stagehands said to him, "Don't you know who that guy is that gave you the thumbs up?" He said, "no." The stagehand said, "That was Brian Wilson, he stayed for your whole show." How does it get any better than that?

I appreciated the simplicity and openness of this documentary. Felt like a snapshot of Brian in his later years. This will be an invaluable primary source for future generations of music lovers.

I was really moved by the documentary. I was not a Beach Boys fan growing up in the 1960's and 70's, and didn't pay the band much attention, frankly. But in recent years, since becoming a regular listener of the Tom Petty channel on Sirius XM where I heard Tom Petty talking about his admiration of Brian Wilson and, in particular, the Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds, I have begun to pay more attention to the Beach Boys music. For me, Long Promised Road has shed a completely new light on Brian Wilson's genius and the depth and meaning of the Beach Boys' music. Looking back, I'm disappointed that for so many years I missed out on the significance of the Beach Boy's music catalog, but nowadays I'm enjoying listening to the music with a more critical ear. Also, I really love that a significant overlay for the documentary is Brian Wilson's mental health story. I was not aware that Brian Wilson suffered from mental health difficulties. My family has encountered mental health problems, so I can somewhat relate to Brian Wilson's situation and I am pleased that he has been able to cope with his daily battle. Kudos to everyone involved in this masterpiece of a documentary.

The movie love and mercy about brian wilson is truly amazing. I watched it about 5 times in one week when i first heard of it and it really lifted a dark cloud over my life with all the drug abuse and everything else i was up to at the time and had been for years. Even though i have always loved the beach boys, seeing his story in this movie really helped me with my recovery from mental illness and the life i was leading.

Brian you are amazing for your brave soul and administration of mental health problems as I have mental health problems such as depression anxiety disorders and stress disorders and had them for a long time and so many people think that this is not a real illness it is a real illness some people don't realise and understand that the illness can take over your life you are so brave Brian you take care of yourself and your family

Yup, i suffer from severe social anxiety which made me a shut in, borderline personality disorder, generalized anxiety and depression too. Brian Wilson is my hero because living with a debilitating mental ilness is reason enough, but also how his brain informed his music and how he was able to make such beautiful, life changing songs while battling his demons. He's one of the most important musicians ever.

I remember back in the 90s, one of the first biopics on Brian I ever saw, "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" came across as incredibly negative, and as factual as some of it was, made Brian out to be a weirdo, only focusing on his peculiarities (the sandbox, etc). I'm glad to see that this one showed him in much more positive light

This documentary is historical just for the fact that Taylor Hawkins is no longer with us. Whatever footage of him that is featured in this doc is already historical as one of the last recorded interviews of him alive.

The Brian Wilson of 2022 cannot perform/function on stage anymore - it is painfully obvious yet somehow he is still doing concerts. It's horrible to see this great musical legend in his state doing this whilst struggling with his demons in full public view.

He wants to do it and people want to see him. No one is going to his concerts expecting anything other than being able to witness one of the greatest musicians of all times. My Dad saw him 3 years ago and said he and his band were fantastic.

.Melinda is obviously the cause of this, I can't believe Al and his band perform when they can hear it's a disaster, no matter how they try to put on a brave face., it's time to stop, he's done enough.

The myth has gone on silly for years. When was the last time he released anything really worth hearing? The Brian obsession has become an industry in itself. He was in hospital even when Sunflower was being made- very sad but all hidden for years....

I think we've seen the last of him on stage thank God, it was getting bad the recent shows I saw on KZfaq, he's basically catatonic doesn't sing a word, they just strap him into his chair for the show and he just sits there. Whether he enjoys it we'll never know for sure at this point, but it appears to be over now.
