Great video again Graeme, always a pleasure to get the next one. So true of the light freshwater rods catching fish from the shore. Years ago in the wintertime I used to take a cheap little 10ft light leger rod and fish off the harbour wall at Brighton. In a 3 hour session through a high tide I'd come home with at least a dozen or so good sized whiting. You're exploits are convincing me to get out there again!

A very good video Graeme , a good thing about using the multi 7 section carp/pike rods such as the Shimano Exage or the bison rods is that when you go on holiday overseas you can pop them in you're suitcase without having to worry about excess baggage charges ,and still have a rod that will deal with Good sized barramundi and Snapper. And also have the ability to fish with artificials float or bottom gear. Many thanks again for the time and trouble to put this on .

In my experience carp rods and bait runner reels make ideal pier and surf casting gear. I've caught plaice to 2lb, bass to 3lb, thornback to 2lb and plenty of whiting, dabs, dog fish, black bream, gunard and other bits and bobs. Just make sure you rinse all the salt water from your tackle afterwards. Tip load up with 'slipper limpets' after a storm, you can salt them or freeze them and I've caught all the above on them. (Dorset and Hampshire coast)

I remember my first codling at deal february 1975, first cast with my brand new abu beachcaster and abu 7000, first cast first birds nest, my terminal tackle falling about 20 feet from the waters edge alongside a groin. after sorting out the birdy i reeled in and there was a 2lb codling! sometimes the fish are very close, and fishing alongside groins can be very productive for good sized fish. and what a good opportunity to use lighter gear. nice video mate took me back to my old south coast days.

Great video guys and some of the scenery caught in that footage makes all those chilly days/nights worthwhile and the fishing of course! I have often wondered if my Carp rods would be okay for beach fishing and I guess now I know, I have used them for fishing the rivers for small flatfish, whiting and codling but I think I might have to have some fun at the beach with light gear :) Great video and keep the videos coming guys!!

I use a 9 ft spinning rod for tope into deep water, it's a teklon. Great fun, I fish out around 40yds it's an Irish mark, off a pier. I won't disclose the location because it only fit's 3 angler's to get proper comfortable fishing. And two of us worked hard enough to find our location....not wanting to arrive at the mark and some savage banging the head of a 30lbs tope and bringing it home to offer it to the wheelie bin.

Great video as usual Graeme, enjoyed it. Just thought it would be a good idea to warn anglers new to the Bristol Channel that walking out at low tide is not recommended, especially on the Upper Bristol Channel, as the banks are very deep with mud and you can easily get stuck with the tide coming in if you are not familiar with the marks.

I would say they would work as I have done just that, and we even have a shore film up in the playlist somewhere. If you used 4oz grip leads they should hold a decent bait out in any wind or tide flow.

I have no idea about tackle makes,but the rod might be too light in windy conditions .Probably OK for fishing in estuaries,off piers,rocks or windless days from a beach .Don't know about the reel I never heard of that one.

Graeme, would a lighter weight surf rod say, 1/2-3 oz casting weight, be a good carp rod? They're much cheaper and more widely available here in the states than carp rods.
@TAFishing

They would probably do the job and save yourself some buckaroos .I have caught Carp on lots of different rods from a flyrod to a pen rod.

Old comment I know but take a look at the okuma rockaway surf rods, would be exactly what you’re looking for I think, or even a heavier action salmon rod would work just fine for carp, for example, the 10ft cabelas/bass pro fish eagle rods in the 1/2-2oz rating,
