In this video I target Small Eye Ray at a local South Coast mark named Hordle. I share the rig, bait, tide and tactics to target these amazingly beautiful creatures.
Fishing alongside my friend Nick Mann we both beaver away trying for an elusive daytime catch.

Only ever caught small eyed of of the boat and never had much success with sand eel of of the beach. Great fish Mark tight lines

We have depleted stocks of sand eel along the south coast but they can be a very effective bait. I did have 3 blondes to the boat in 15 minutes on sand eel.

Love a Ray. Only caught 2 small eyed rays before and both at Burton Bradstock freshwater near West bay. Lovely creatures. Rig training on here helps adapt our rigs, always a learning curve as we all do it different. 👍

You are 100% there are many different ways from pulley droppers, up and overs and straight pulleys. There was a time when it was a paternoster only. Adapting until it works or changing when it fails is part of the enjoyment for me. 🎣👍🏻

Great instructional video Mark. You must be local as you fish most marks where I do i.e. Shingle Bank, Hordle Cliffs, Barton (not now cos' I'm in my 80's and cant get back up that slope!) Don't get out as much as I like as I have to rely on my son whenever he's free as he's my bag carrier!. Tight lines mate and keep those videos coming.

Funny you mention it but…… I was searching out new marks and stumbled across an isolated village inhabited by Icelandic nymphomaniacs keen on invigorating their declining breeding programme. I felt it was rude to just up and leave without helping these needy ladies but I now find myself totally depleted of energy. I’ll be back soon once I catch my breath. 🎣

I use pulleys of varying lengths depending on what I’m targeting or where I am. A short pulley can be very effective for hounds. 🎣

Tbh it has been some time since I last did it but I was trying for that extra bit of distance. The reels are Penn Fathom CS’s and I really like them, cracking bits of kit.

Hello mate , thinking of getting the same beach set-up as you’ve got with the 6&b and the fathom CS , have you got an updated review or any points you’d like to mention regarding the equipment , also thought about the fireblade instead could you give a comparison or any alternatives you’d recommend ? Cheers
@seaangling
@seaangling 11 ай бұрын
Hi William, I had a pair of Fireblades and although I loved the concept the actual rods weren’t what I expected. I felt they were too stiff in the tip for my fishing. That doesn’t mean they don’t suit others though. The 6&B’s have the benefit of length, strength and a tip that still shows well but might also be a little stiff to hold a curve with a 5oz lead. A 6oz grip sits nice and obviously is what they are designed around. I have recently converted the mag dials on my CS’s to the flat fathom version as I could adjust to their position when retrieving. I would seriously consider a fathom 12 or 15 before going full on CS. They are all cracking reels though and when set they cast really well. If you do go down the 6&B route check out the offers at Decathalon. They sometimes have them reduced.

How Mark smashing video as usual. You mention that with the bait presented on a pennel rig you have the hooks coming out on either side of the bait. I would tend to bring them out on the same side is there a right and wrong way of doing this or just up to the angler. Do you buy the top pennel hooks with the turned down eye or do you do what i do and bend them myself using a good quality hook like the Varivas?
@seaangling
@seaangling Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, there is no right or wrong way really just what you prefer. The Varivas hook I used is a designated pennel hook and comes pre-formed with the bend.

Hi Mark, great video. How do the 6 n bait compare against the fireblade?
@seaangling
@seaangling Жыл бұрын
I prefer the 6&B, the Fireblades were too stiff in the tip and soft in the middle. I never really felt comfortable with the blades. GoOutdoors had AFAW rods on offer recently, price might surprise you.

@@seaangling thanks for the reply. I was thinking of going the other way. From 6ab to the fireblade. I'll see if I can try 1 before committing.

@seaangling
@seaangling Жыл бұрын
I think it will catch but pose a hazard where they wrap themselves in the line, they have a habit of doing that with longer rigs. It would be worth trying a 3’ pulley depending on where you are fishing. 🦈🎣👍🏻
