Lyrics:
Drifting in and out
you see the road you’re on
It came rolling down your cheek
you say just what you mean
and in between
It’s never as it seems
Help me to name it, Help me to name it
If you built yourself a myth you’d know just what to give
What comes after this momentary bliss
the consequence
Of what you do to me
help me to name it, help me to name it
Found yourself in a new direction
arrows falling from the sun
canyon calling
Would they come to greet you
let you know you’re not the only one
can’t keep hangin’ on
To what is dead and gone
If you built yourself a myth you’d know just what to give
Materialize
Or let the ashes fly
help me to name it, help me to name it

This song makes me feel like I'm in the eye of a hurricane. So peaceful, but surrounding me is destruction and rain. It makes me feel so depressed and nostalgic, but in the greatest way possible. I have yet to find another song that has this effect on me that isn't made by beach house. Love it

In Literature Class at the University of Michigan, an amazing instructor named Janet Michelena taught us that Myth is a human attempt to overcome our Reality, and that Naming gives us a sense of control over people and things and events. This incredible song radiates that feeling of rolling the stone of Sisyphus up the hill. Although the stone may roll back on us over and over again, and our repeated attempts may seem futile, it is our determination to keep trying and never to quit that grants us dignity and a sense of inner tranquility. This song can overcome us with melancholy and sadness, but ultimately also provides a sense of peace deeper than the Ocean...

I hear a lot of people describe Beach House as "calm" or "relaxing" and that's always perplexed me. To me it's intense; it demands the listener's attention and evokes a visceral emotional response. It captures that indescribable feeling that's melancholy, pensive. It's simultaneously happy and sad, hopeless and hopeful. It brings to light that unsettling, confusing, and conflicting feeling, and, not only that, but takes advantage of the mezmerizing and hypnotizing power it has over people and abuses it. It brings it to the forefront of the listener's mind and puts them in a constant state of confusion and discomfort. I've always had a hard time describing why I like beach house so much because in all honesty, their music DOESN'T make me happy. But it doesn't make me sad either. It's very multifaceted, it makes me feel an array of emotions but something about it is so captivating and addictive that I keep coming back to it. Edit: Wow guys I wasn't expecting to get this many likes, thank you for the kind words ❤️❤️❤️ I'm happy this resonated with so many people Edit 2: Guys please stop saying this comment is overly dramatic, cringe, or sounds like I'm trying too hard to be deep, lmao I know. I was 15 when I wrote it so chill. I know it sounds cringe but I keep it up because it resonates with a lot of people and it is somewhat of a reminder of where I was in my life and specifically with my taste in music 4 years ago. Being cringe is part of life and I'm sure you were at 15 too so chill.

II think it depends on the context in which you're listening to it. I for example used to put on Beach House on a very low volume whenever I was studying because it sounded quite calm and relaxing to me and made it so I was able to focus on studying. I have pretty bad ADD and can't study when it's too quiet, but I can't study when there's too much going on and there are a lot of different distinct sounds, so I spent years looking for music I could put on that isn't too distracting for me. These days I listen way more intently and the music gives off a different vibe. I wouldn't say it still isn't somewhat calming and relaxing to me, since I mostly listen to metal and kpop which has a lot more energy to it, but it's definitely way more emotive so in that sense it is quite intense. I love the bittersweet feeling it gives me. The only other artists that have a similar effect on me are Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead. Like you said, it doesn't really make you happy, but it doesn't really make you sad either.

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, introduced to me by one of the most beautiful people I've ever known. Though we've drifted apart, this song will forever be almost too painful to listen to, but at the same time as essential to my survival as air or water. I'd never heard anything like it before, it was like seeing a rainbow for the first time. I can't explain the feeling it brings me - a familiarity but also the feeling that I've found something new that I've always been searching for, even though I don't know what it is. It's like it completes me or fills in some missing puzzle piece. The chord changes are heartbreaking, the last 30 seconds are an assault to my senses that leaves me with goosebumps and tears. I don't know if any of this makes sense or if anyone else will ever even read it... I needed to express this. I miss you, NE. I'll love you for the rest of my life.

I love the fact that when she says, "Help me to make it", she really isn't talking to anybody in particular. The person who has so much control over her(what you do to me), does not seem like the same person that would listen to her problems. Her cries seem really more like an exasperated interjection than an actual call to somebody that she cares for. She's lonelier than she lets on.

It’s 4:03 in the morning, I finally got to lay down on my back after a hectic day. Made my bed while listening to Beach House songs. Now that the lights are off, only a faint ray of street light is peeping through my balcony, this song is hitting me on a whole new level. I can't describe anymore how I am feeling right now. I feel like crying but it's neither out of sadness nor happiness. I think this is how one feels when s/he truly feels the song.

Saw Beach House live last night and I saw one of the most romantic scenes ever while this song was played. A couple next to me sitting on the grass on the hill we were on in front of the stage pulled out a joint, smoked it and then laid back looking into the sky and zoning out while smiling and holding hands. Few times have I ever seen happiness and bliss as pure as that.

Every time I hear this song I cry. It gives hope.

this song is looking back on all the shit that's happened to you and bursting into tears of joy at the same time; joy over how fucking lucky you are to be alive and to have lived through all of your wonderful memories. this song is being terribly afraid of the future while knowing that in the end, everything will be alright, as you fall into a soft bed like at the end of every single hard day, only that this one time, it will be permanent. this song is seeing pictures in your head not knowing whether they are memories from your childhood or just dreams from when you were a kid. this song is suddenly seeing the petrol station in your hometown in front of your inner eye, it's dark and stormy and there's rain on car windows, it's that same station you passed every time you walked to the cinema with your mum or went to buy sweets on Sunday evenings. this song is remembering how much your mother did for you and tearing up at the thought of how lonely she is now, how lonely she has been all her life without being able to notice it earlier.

Charlie5thumbs I'm not so sure that people dislike this song. Its more that people get stuck when it comes to their time or genres of music! Even a music lover such as myself! I was a teenager during the grunge era! And have a lot of that music on playlist CDs! But I expand to other genres of music different sounds! It's so easy to get close minded when it comes to music! Even though this is more of the 2000 generation of music! It's good music and it shouldn't be put off with my era was better blah blah blah! True music lovers keep an open mind!

I have no idea. Maybe agony is their reason? Sometimes a song is too much to like, so one might wish to distance away from it. I surely clicked *like* on this song! It's a dreamscape!!!!!! But, really it's kind of a melancholy agony song. The emotion in this song is an excessive subconscious draw of something unusually unsettling. Everyone has their interpretation.

I had relationship with a man 50yrs old, 30yrs older than me, and I’m a man as well… I loved him so much… I cannot describe the feeling and he loved me so much, his affection… I was the happiest, unfortunately, He left this world… Every day, Every minute, Every second I remember him saying : Will you remember me? Will I be able to feel ur love? When I listen to the song, lyrics say : Of what do u to me!? It hurts me inside. Love exists in every gender. We cannot feel other people and can never control our feelings.

Beach House is so special. I think the best word to describe their music is 'picturesque' - listening to their songs really is like exploring a new landscape, a walk in the forest (or in the park :) sorry for that). I'd urge you to check out the artist Seaside as well if you enjoy Beach House, especially the songs Away and Sweetest Love - they conjure up that same feeling for me, lush landscapes (and lovely music).

Those ticking sound on the first seconds of the song, give me some sort of visual images, like a slide show, that keep showing me different picture of my happiest and saddest memories each time the piano hit the notes. While looking for the lyrics, I saw this short paragraph form of lyrics and I immediately saw the lyrics "Found yourself in a new direction arrows falling from the sky..." And I recognized it. I just took a heroic dose of mushrooms and this song, as well as another one of their songs, “Silver Soul,” came on during one of the more intense portion of the trip as I was settling into the experience. It’s worth mentioning that I’d listened to these songs many times before, but this time was so much different. I truly wish I could come up with the words to capture how intensely majestic and ethereal of an experience listening to them again on a high dose of psychedelics was, and I know I cannot, but I will give some brief thoughts. My entire body felt a deep, powerful warmth gently rush over it that I will never forget for as long as I live, and I do not attribute this solely to the mushrooms. Every ounce of my being felt activated and enlivened. Tears were genuinely streaming down my face. I could not speak. It demanded my attention and my thoughtful consideration, and it melted my soul with a loving embrace. It was just pure awe in every sense imaginable. “Beautiful” does not do this piece of artwork justice. Thank you, Beach House.

This song is telling us how when things don’t go our way we tend to build our own myths in which we pretend everything is so happy within our bubble as we think the momentary thought of being happy. That’s what daydreaming is it’s a sense of reworking your brain to pretend in your own world that you’ve achieved your end goal. Once you come back to reality you realize the myth of pure happiness is unattainable in the real world in the sense that you’re imagining it. Real happiness is being able to take the pain, sadness, and resentment you are filled with in life and to channel your bad thoughts into something greater. Always seeking to make others around you happy will oftentimes end in a smile on your face. You must take the long road in order to discover true happiness and feel all the ugly in order to further your journey. I’m finally coming back from my past sadness after I learned my personal “myth” in the past only kept me in pain. As this song says I’ve finally found myself in a new direction and I’m so grateful for everyone in my life. I turned 9 months straight of being mentally destroyed into a life full of great moments with the most legitimate people to talk to. When life gets hard swing back until the blows soften up. When you’re able to take its hits you know you’ve grown into a man. When you’re all alone don’t build the myth of being happy feel the sadness until you’re able to go back out into the world with a new perspective. I went from having my dream girl and best friend to nothing over night. I clawed my way back with friends & family and regained my strength to no longer feel like nothing. Acceptance and forgiveness are the keys to your happiness. Life is too short for grudges.
