I have always used the .308, and the Remington 150-180 gr. Cor-Lokt great all around cartridge. Many cartridges, .270, 7mm, 30.06 all do the job.

Think i read about a hunter like you, used a rabbit gun, for a bear. We started off, many years ago, with .308. Too many close calls, doing predator control. Partner went to .338, i chose 9.3x62, with norma oryx 286 gr. .308 works under ideal conditions, smaller bears

Are these Hornady Monoflex or FTX 45-70 bullets that are failing to penetrate? Also, why you would recommend something for bear defense that doesn't work well for hunting? (45-70)

Well done! I flex to your experience. Will now check out your knife video(s).

After harvesting a good size boar on wednesday evening with 45auto and 230gr hollowpoint with a muzzle velocity of around 950fps, getting 17" penetration and recovering the bullet expanded to just over 3/4" makes me wonder what happened to your 45-70. Was it a squib that didn't get stuck in the barrel that you just didn't notice the abnormal light recoil and report because you were too excited? If I get that much penetration with that light of bullet going that slow, how do you get that little penetration with a bullet of much higher sectional density and much tougher construction going a bit faster.

I have a friend named Jeff. He once overheard me talking about Carp(fish). It was so long ago but I think he said he used em for hunting. He asked where I saw the Carp & went and got some. I’m not sure what he was hunting. Does that make sense? ( I’m not a hunter)

I really liked what you said about remaining perfectly still and quiet after the shot, I've never heard anyone say that before, yet it makes perfect sense. You're not there to dance a jig and pop a cork over the bear just because you put a slug in him. You have food because you killed the animal .

You have much experience hunting Black Bear. I agree with your choices of calibers, with the exception of the 45-70, which has been known to take a Cape Buffalo, (using the most powerful loads of this caliber. See Buffalo Bore Ammunition. If this cartridge can take a Cape Buffalo, it can take a Black Bear, (my opinion)
@christianpaul33033 жыл бұрын
45-70 is my preferred caliber as most of my bear shots are within 50-100 yards. Thinking he hasn't done a lot of hunting with 45-70 - and who's shooting bears "in thick bone"? Both lungs and the heart and it zips right through.

I’m doing my first bear hunt this fall in Missouri. Hunting from the ground in thick woods. Having to choose from ammo I already own. Should I take a 30-30 with 170 federal blue box? Or my 270 with 130 grain trophy bonded bear claw?
@NorthernWoodsmanElite2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like great time . I love 270 and it drops bears on their tracks. I’ll take the 270 any day . Having said that 30-30 is better in thick woods with open sites . Use what ever you shoot better both can do the job . Have fun is the most important

@@MichaelMartin-ib2ic it all depends on the distance you plan to hunt. For under 100yrds id say any 30cal will do. At over 100 id say go with 270 or 30-06. Just depends on your distance.

In BC the government recomments that in defending yourself against a grizzly that a 30-06 at minimum is recommended with at least 180 grai bullets. But i agree. 7mm rem mag is a good choice. For grizzly i wouldnt go to anything less than a .338 win mag.

It all depends on what kind of bear and perhaps even where your hunting, alaska coast or interior. Then you have kind of bear. black bear have "thin skin" and grizzy the interior bear have med skin and brownies the coastal have thick skin. I say that because the size of bear will very in size because of those factors. Ok that said. Black bear-30-06 160 to 180 gr noslor partition. Grizzly and Brownies just use the same 338 Winchester Magnum 220 gr noslor partition and always i repeat always spine them. Shoot them behind the head or backbone area. Then they will drop right now.then you hive them a kill shot. 338 Winchester Magnum is the most preferred Alaskan gun for Bear

Northern Woodsman Elite just wondering. My dad used to fly fish in Wyoming. He doesn’t own any firearms except a .22. He was told to get some of that bear spray. I never really seen it in action. Just curious. Thx
@NorthernWoodsmanElite4 жыл бұрын
It’s better than nothing I guess. But it would also work because you hold your ground getting ready to spray and most of the time the bear will false charge and run away. Bear bangers work better in my opinion

What is your take on the 458 Winchester Magnum for bear
@NorthernWoodsmanElite2 жыл бұрын
Hello thanks for watching, I’m sorry to say I don’t have any experience on that caliber
@NorthRiverGuide2 жыл бұрын
I'll add my 2 cents. The modern 45-70 loading is a bit unnecessary for black bear. A 458winmag with the same bullet has around 400fps on the modern 45-70 load. What I would ask is why do people think so much power is required just to kill a black bear?

A 45/70 with a 400 grain flat nose bullet will go length way through most black bear 🐻 If you chose hollow point or leverEvolution bullets they will disintegrate on impact . Only use those bullets on coyotes and deer !

Buffalo Bore mono metals solids will penetrate if you think the 45/70 is short on penetration. The 45/70 has many power levels since there are a lot of old guns with weaker designs in existence

If you use cooper bullets, shoulder shots are fine. 30-30 is not my first choice or even my second choice or third. 45-70 from a stand and its lights out for a bear. 308 is the way to go...black bears are not that hard to kill.

A cheep and popular way to bait here is to drive a nail through a tuna can and bend the point around to make a loop and attach it to a tree, the bear will spend a fair amount of time trying to pry the can open it'll give you plenty of time to make a shot
