Jose I don't use them solar chargers. I keep a lot of hive in Bear Country in Apalachicola National Forest I used to red snapper. Before I always go in Bear Country before I put the bees in I'll come in one week before and I put bacon on the bottom on the bottom wire let him taste it. if you have yellow jackets around you were always at the Yellow Jackets Nest first. Just some advice from and old-timer

Have you tried baiting the fence? Wrap some bacon on the wire, or hang a sardine can or tuna can on the hot wires. The bear will smell the lure, and get a full bolt in the mouth. You can also lay down some grounded chicken wire around the perimeter to ensure the bear gets it full force. If the ground is dry, they may not get much of a jolt.

I don’t have any brand to suggest for you. It’s been too many years since I kept bees. Here is a comment or two that might help you in making a decision. 1). For the battery issue, I’ve seen solar units to boost battery life. Also, can take a pretty strong jolt to knock a bear back. I know of one incident where a bear got hit by a bee fence and afterwards took out a 6 foot manzanita bush, completely up rooted. 2) You now have that location established as a food source for the bear. This might break the bears cycle. I think, once the food source is established, they come back every few days. Going to be harder to keep him out now. Might try moving the bees out for a week, then bringing them back to a different location on the property. Be sure your fence is active immediately. Hope this helps.

For a fence energizers I would go with Gallagher or patriot if you lay some welded wire on the ground and brown that wire you’ll have a better chance of hitting that dear heart some people call it tanglefoot but basically the Bears steps on the welded wire and that ground him out you connect that directly to your grounding rods. This way he’ll have a better direct path to ground
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback. We are getting a Parmak but will also research the Gallagher and Patriot? Do you think chicken wire on the ground and grounded also works as affective as what you mentioned?
@Hawaiian_Grizzly_Bear
@Hawaiian_Grizzly_Bear 3 жыл бұрын
The Gallagher turbo wire is also a good product. Much better than a lot of other poly wires on the market. You can also place pieces of mylar on the wire. It will get the bears to investigate it when they come to the wire. They will put their nose on it to smell it and zap they will not like it. The bear that knows there's good stuff inside that fence will be hard to stop. But it can be done. It'll just take time. If he loses more then he wins he will move on.

I use Parmak Solarpack 12 (sp?), black bear tried to dig under the fence and hit the lower wire (I actually run a ground wire along the very bottom at ground level of the metal posts as our ground is very dry, but he hit the hot). Left a trail of poo down the driveway as it ran away. Kept coming back to test the fence, obviously remembering the pre-fence feast but is now only leaving a trail of crushed grass as it circles the fence. I really believe you have to have a higher joule rating to get them to pay attention as previously we used the 10 mile version of what you are using. That did good for deer and the like, but the bear just pushed the fence post aside. Not sure what types of bears out west, I have heard ours are smaller in New England, but this one is able to put claw marks in trees higher than I can reach. If I find a higher powered one, I might just switch to it as I can see the bear is testing it for weaknesses but I don't have electric out there obviously for the bigger ones.

Parmak 6 pack, if ground is dry and grounding is an issue alternate hot and ground wires on fence posts along with using ground rods. So if using 6 fence wires 3 or 4 will be hot and the rest will be grounds. Bear pokes his head between wires and zap. Remember bears have a lot of hair for that spark to get through and the bigger the fence charger the better!

The grounding is important, not just the rods but run every other wire a ground right to the charger. That way it will be grounded and complete the circuit at the same time as it pushes through. It works for rank bulls and pigs it will work for this bear. I believe Bob Bonnie has a video out about how it should be set up.

I haven't had bear trouble myself. But I'd heard from people that did and they often say once the bear has a taste its very hard to be rid of them. You may have to do some extreme measures. sorry this happened to you. Maybe you could do multiple electric fences, and move the yard? People I'd talked to that had bear trouble think that moving the bee yard is one of their good options and that its pretty much hard/impossible to get them to not come back. So some of them may consider a move because of this. But I get also that its not that easy to find a bee yard. :( And takes lots of time to set up. :S You know if you got a bear problem, you could see if there's a houndsman in your area. Thing with that is I don't know your states rules. But where I'm at, there's this niche of people that are called houndsmen that love dealing with that kind of stuff. (Not sure what your legal requirements are.) Part of why they might jump at it is because they have to keep their dogs trained and fresh on techniques and handling.

Once the bears learn they can get in it's hard to keep them out. I'm not sure what Fish & Game rules are these days but they used to set barrel traps for us. I think you can shoot them IF you "catch them in the act" but I would double check. Back in the day I spent many a night sleeping on the back of the truck with my rifle. I use Parmak 30 mile boxes. Cell cameras help keep an eye on them if you have coverage. I have a bear dog named Rusty, he'll take care of it.

I’m running 5 hot aluminum wire with one ground down below. I feel my grounds are good because of the area we are in, I am concerned that my solar charger battery unit my be lacking it’s integrity being that I left it on over the winter and it being on while the hot wires were grounded out to the chicken wire when the bear got it last time. I was reading easily 3000 with my light tester. The light slightly read up to 5000 but not as bright as the 3000 marking. I’m assuming 3000 was my actual reading. What do you think?
