SilverBear is what I have in my AK. It's one of my go-to home-defense carbines and a few years back, I used it sometimes as a patrol carbine. It was the only JHP I could find several years ago. Good to see it would have worked well enough. :) I'm not too worried about the fragments that made it 22" as they are low enough mass to lose power very fast; probably well before they find any of my neighbor's houses.

Yeah, I was born on Veteran's Day. Well, actually, it was still called Armistice Day when I was born, but that soon changed. I've always counted it as a privilege to be born on this day. I didn't serve in the military, but family members and my best friend did. Shoot! I came very close to joining the Navy with him in 1972. Really good video & test Tools. While I don't have an AK type rifle or anything that shoot the 7.62x39 the results are still relevant. Make one wonder if these rounds were actually loaded by the same manufacture under a different name. The speed difference really wasn't that much at less than 5%, but as we saw in another test just a few days ago that slight difference proved to be just enough. In the end those are both devastating rounds. Believe in yourself and you will be unstoppable. Be ever vigilant, always aware and stay safe.

I would say that your projectile performance was virtually identical. However, there is clearly a difference in velocity. It would be interesting to pull the projectiles from each of these and compare the powder types and charges. If they're the same type of powder, it would be virtually impossible to determine whether they're the same actual powder (for example, if they're both ball powders, there's not a way to visually tell BL-C(2) from H335). But if they're the same type of powder with different charge weights or different types of powders, even with the same charge weight, it would explain the differences in velocity.

Came all apart is that normal for AK ammo?
@cgsimons1187
@cgsimons1187 Жыл бұрын
@@allenbolen9705 That is more likely with hollow points from rifles. The concern with bullets breaking up or overexpanding is when they lose so much energy that they fail to penetrate to an adequate depth. This is especially a concern with more common pistol calibers where the fragments fail to go beyond the main wound channel. When they break apart and actually spread out substantially, they create their own additional wound channels making the wound more devastating. A FMJ AK-47 bullet is less likely to fragment and will still do meaningful damage by yawing(tumbling) once it hits flesh. Though it is more likely to exit and therefore dump less energy into the target than these hollow points.

Thanks for the video. I sometimes hunt deer with my AR chambered in 7.62x39 and I used the Federal Power-Shok SP. I've shot the Silver Bear SP and it doesn't group as well but it's literally half the price and it groups good enough so I've been tempted. Now that I see your test and how it breaks up I know it would kill a deer (or pig) but I'd be eating chunks of it in every meal wouldn't I :D So for hunting I'll stick with the Federal stuff. Interesting note though, when I was testing at 100 yards every brand of 7.62x39 I could find, the Wolf Polyformance FMJ (NOT THE HP) was near match grade consistency. No other round I tested was better than it, most at 2 MOA but the Polyformance was .5 MOA every time. Even Hornady was 1 MOA. IF someone wanted to make super consistent shots with a 7.62x39 that should be their first test/choice. Surprised me quiet a bit, but the machines that make Wolf must be packing them consistent and the poly coating must help them all hit a sweet spot because the other Wolf types didn't do any better than other Russian or steel brands of ammo.

7.62x39 is a cartridge with enough power to be really useful for a woodsman's hunting cartridge for typical woods ranges and deer size animals. A little bolt action carbine in 7.62x39 would take a lot of game to 300 pounds with no issue when fed decent bullets. Kind of a simple "working" cartridge easily enough. If you were a subsistence hunter living in the woods, it would deliver what you need regularly and with economy.

I'd like to see a chrono test on some of that steel case 7.62x39mm through a bolt action such as the Ruger American Ranch or the CZ 527. Curious how much loss there is tapping gas off to operate the action of a semi-auto.

That stuff is still pretty nasty! Used to have the 154gr tula soft points that was a lot of guys go to cheap hog round. The only soft points I have is golden bear 125gr soft points. Most of my stash is fmj that’s just what was on sale mostly. Makes me think if they used this in war how much more horrific the wounds would be compared to the fmj on the battle field. Interesting stuff as always.
