I suggest for 2021 reviewing Beast Wars & Beast Machines, Transformers Animated in 2022, Prime in 2023, RID 2015 in 2024, Cyberverse in 2025 & so on. Or just make a Transformers month reviewing all these shows. Something like that.

Child soldiers? An interesting observation of the Maximal crew in Neo. And possibly more literal then you think. Those Maximal Protoforms from Beast Wars? The original intention was that they were for all intents and purposes, newborn Transformers. Various Transformers Collector Club exclusive stories have attempted to retcon this, suggesting at least some of the Protoforms like Tigertron and Airrazor had had lives previous to being placed in stasis, but most are brand new Sparks, with no life experience, and no choice but to follow the programing the Maximals and/or Predacons gave them. The difference is that unlike Big Convoy's trainee crew, most of the bots who emerge from their stasis pods in Beast Wars don't act like children, even though in a very literal sense they were.

I'm surprised to have found someone talking about this obscure show, and even more surprised to find you didn't like it. I've watched every Transformers show that has been made so far, and out of all of them, including TFA, G1, Earthspark, and even the original Beast Wars, Beast Wars Neo is definitely my favourite. It's definitely a flawed show, I won't deny that, and its repetitive background music, plots, and stiff animation leave something to be desired, but for me all the other pieces fall into place to make it an incredibly enjoyable package. Let me break down why I love this show so much. First, I'd like to offer a different explanation for the Maximal recruits. In the first few episodes, I also thought they were children and quit watching the show because of it, but when I got back into Neo I eventually realized they're all largely young adults who still act childish because they're naive. Heinrad is an obvious exception, being far older than Big Convoy, and Mach Kick is also a mature adult, but I don't think any of the others are children, even Stampy. This was the first TF show where I genuinely liked all of the protagonists and thought they were fun, and Colada is actually my favourite Maximal! I'd say he's a sort of chill, unbothered dude who never worries as much as he probably should. The Predacons were also my favourite "bad guy" team, even though most of them aren't really all that bad. They banter and bicker with one another, but they also care about each other, making sure their teammates are alright. Magmatron is a strict and sometimes unfair leader but he always ensures the wellbeing of his men. He seems generally pretty well-liked, especially by DNAVI and Guiledart, until he puts himself and all his comrades in mortal peril in his desperation to prevent Unicron from reviving. Like the Galvatrons of Armada and Energon, he's willing to sacrifice himself for the good of the universe, but unlike those two this is a trait he has from the very start - since Unicron destroyed his home planet, preventing Unicron from ever coming back is a deeply personal mission to him. He and Armada Megatron/Galvatron are tied for my favourite TF villains for those reasons. I do appreciate how accurate to the toys the character models are. I own the Colada and Archadis figures (and a few other non-transforming Neo toys) and they really do look the same way on the show. I get annoyed when the characters in a TF show look nothing like the toys, so it's nice that these ones are not only faithful but make the actual toys look even better. I'll accept the stiffer animation if what I get in return is (usually) well-drawn and accurate robots, as opposed to Beast Wars's janky 3D animation and often drab environments. As for why they go into beast mode so often...I guess they're just furries? Yeah, let's go with that. To me, it's the last ten episodes of Neo that really elevate it above all other shows I've seen. The tension and intrigue ramps up, and suddenly you're worried that all these bots you've come to like could actually be in danger. The utter obliteration of the Cybertronian fleet and Unicron's successful integration with Vector Sigma were heart-stopping moments, and the finale actually feels exciting and wraps up the story nicely. I'll be honest, as I was watching the last few episodes I was REALLY nervous they were about to pull a Headmasters or Masterforce ending, but by the second-to-last episode I was too busy vibrating in excitement to be worried. I personally love the theme song, so hearing it show up in the episode itself was pure joy. I know it's an asspull that Magmatron survived that somehow, but I don't care, Magmatron best boy. In my opinion, one of the best things about Neo is that it retroactively makes BW2 better. BW2 was, at times, difficult for me to get through (I still hear "muchos muchos muchos" echoing in my head sometimes...), but with the context Neo provides it, it suddenly makes that show much more interesting. Galvatron was always Unicron in remission, which can explain some things like his body physically growing from drinking too much Angolmois energy and his freakish resistance to Angolmois energy in general, but it also makes him more tragic. During BW2, he seemed to have made connections and cared about his brother, and if Vector Sigma had asked him at that time whether he would accept the offer of being reborn as an ordinary Cybertronian he might have considered it. But perhaps the betrayal hardened his spark and prevented him from ever caring about another bot again. The fact that the Angolmois energy was always the blood of Unicron also explains why it can transform bots who are bathed in it into more powerful forms, and why the ancient Gaians were so desperate to ensure it was never misused. Also, Big Convoy coming back for the final battle was epic. Hell yeah. Anyways, that's a huge wall of text, but tl;dr: Neo has problems, but it's got my favourite Maximal team, my favourite Predacon team, some of my favourite moments and story threads, excellent visual aesthetics, and an ending that's worth watching all of BW2 and Neo for. It's not going to be everyone's favourite, and I don't think it's the most well-made or executed TF show (I'd give that award to TFA), but it's someone's favourite, and that someone is me.

19:44, Spot on. The limited animation is made even more obvious when the majority of the time, you see the Maximals in Beast mode and not Robot Mode. Which is actually the main reason they have beast modes in the first place, not because to disguise or protect themselves.

Beast Wars neo manga has implied that Neo maximals have adopted more organic attributes, such as being able to produce offspring. Then again, they could in Victory manga too.

Dark Energon and Anglomois are two different things. While they ultimately share the same same origin, Anglomois is more unpredictable, capable of having good affects (create Lio Junior) and isn't inherently evil, while Dark Energon is obvious in its affect.

idw magmatron is a lot more intersting in the book beast wars the gathering he's actually a tripredecus agent who seems loyal but secrectly wants to lead an army of predacons to take over cybertron himself oh and he and big convoy, heinrad, bigmos and leo convoy were on the Bi-Partate Committee for State Affairs on cybertron

Maybe the perfect thing you could review is maybe some entries in the Brave series. They’re basically better Transformers anime than the actual Transformers anime shows. Maybe you could go classic and start with the first one, Brave Excaiser, or maybe go straight for the good stuff with GaoGaiGar and maybe even Betterman since they take place in the same universe.

Honestly, as much as it can be rocky at times, I really like Cybertron/Galaxy Force. Yes, the Velocitron arc took way too long. Yes the fact that Cybertron was made into a sequel to Energon made way too many plot holes. Yes, the animation is slightly stunted and awkward at times. No, I don't care. The designs are legitimately awesome, and the McGuffin is simple, yet highly effective. Plus, I grew up with the show, so I have some slight bias towards it. Beast Wars is great, regardless of the rough animation. Still need to finish Prime, never did watch Season 3. Cyberverse got stale for me, though the idea of a melting pot of different TF ideas is genius.

Dark Nova revived Headmasters Galvatron as Super/Ultra Megatron during "Return of Convoy", but as Dark Nova died, Megatron's sanity circuits have been restored and this continues on in Japanese G2 (Of course skipping long forgotten Operation Combination).
