Honestly, the teenage girls were the scariest part of this movie for me. Talking about getting a teacher killed by getting him fired, always videotaping Beau, the violence, the manipulation…. I knew girls like that growing up. Terrifying.

These critics are top tier and their chemistry is perfect.

I CANNOT STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS FILM. So thought provoking, so provocative, so intense. I absolutely love epics like this that have artistic freedom.

Interesting how his therapist wrote guilty on his pad in the opening therapy scene. There were a lot of water symbolisms.

I just left the theater 5 minutes ago. And this was BY FAR the most complex and surreal movie I’ve ever watched. It was beautiful in an artistic sense and the pacing was phenomenal. I am going to rewatch it sometime in the next few days. Calling it a “fever dream about guilt” is a perfect explanation. I HIGHLY recommend watching this, although it’s extremely long and confusing in the grand scheme.

You’re right about the sex scene being kinda sweet with Beau and Elaine. With the Mariah Carey song in the background and how they reunited and everything I forgot it was a dark movie for a second.

This sounds like the way anxiety , disassociation and guilt plays out in the mind of the afflicted. I will have to brace for this one - love your review. Love Ari Aster. Unflinching vision.

When it ended i definitely wasn't on the mom's side... Throughout the film she is pretty overtly manipulative, and the flashbacks show it was like this for Beau's entire life. Even when she's nice and comforting it's conditional and often shown to be a means to an end for her. That form of manipulation and gaslighting by the person who is supposed to love you the most can really mess a person up and stunt their development--which I think is exactly what the movie shows with Beau. I've watched a few of your film analyses now and I really enjoy all the references and discussions of inspiration for certain scenes. I had noticed a lot myself, but a lot of your catches made me realize there is likely way more to discover. I didn't really know how to feel about the film when it ended, but it's infected my mind since and I continue to like it more and more. Thanks for making me enjoy it even more.

I couldn't make sense of the story up until the 2-hour mark. When it all clicked I found myself crying, mainly because I could deeply relate to Beau and his relationship with his narcissistic mother. The whole theme of guilt, anxiety, and being put on trial...man!! As someone who lives under the roof of a narcissistic mother figure, it hit harder than I ever thought it would.

I love movies like this so much, specifically BECAUSE they are so rare. Under the silver lake, Mother, maybe Enemy. They aren’t nonsense, but they are difficult and intentional lol it makes for such an immensely enjoyable experience and the more you get out of it the more grateful you feel for it

The coded Hermetic visuals (monoliths, triangles, pentagles, rainbows - see Venezuelan flag shirt, low-hanging circles, fib spirals) also OZ spelled in multiple frames, brown recluse (violin on head - traditional Jewish instrument - invaders locking him out of his home/land) and 4 brass elephants under the TV (4 World Elephants in Hinduism) with 4 sons in Torah (wise, simple, wicked, one who cannot form questions - Beau represents each of these - as in Oz with Tinman, Scarecrow, Lion - no heart, brains or courage) - 40 years to find his "sons". As precluded by the Mona/Beau scene in trailer 2 with low-hanging fixed circle (deception) projecting inverted pentangles through fish (fertility) as fib spiral (true to nature) on to his "wall", women in Beau's life use emerald green (unconditional love/promised land), masks, actors (Mona employs Beau's Dad, Elaine - Beau's literal light, to deliver with a grin the death of a man in water then proclaim her "love" for him before vanishing - the fake family holding him hostage - handyman and probably everyone who invades Jewish homeland/apartment and the maid who literally raises him AND his therapist) and other outright lies (her lawyer claiming to Beau how Mona's dead - over a low-hanging brick spiral - the BBQ knobs resemble those which Wendy Torrance and the Wizard of Oz are framed with). Look for OZ spelled out in the framework of Mona's house as the camera pans left in the second-to-last scene - and in the Final Judgement monolith as a complete rainbow forms alongside Dr. Cohen. Mona's breaking her bar into water symbolizes river morphology/rainbow - and how that which is above is also below - sun/moon/father/mother/soul/matter - O'Loha = Aloha = Hello/Goodbye - you'll find the Emerald Tablet at its very core. Code also bleeds into dialogue - therapists gets Beau to admit he wants her both alive and dead - and to the synergistic effect (rainbow). Waiter in Twin Peaks telling Agent Cooper "I'm so sorry" re: death of a complete stranger, Laura Palmer. Love/promised land-- don't go away-- come back and stay forever and ever. Goodbye stranger. Through wisdom you rise from the world to heaven. This is gravity's rainbow

I think WE, as film viewers/critics were all being put on trial as well during the ending sequence. The coliseum looked much like a large movie theater due to the stadium seating and the attention to the EXIT signs. Though Richard Kind’s lawyer does speak facts, they are out of context. Yes, Beau was late. Yes, it seems Beau was a disappointing son (though he clearly is not living off his mother’s fortune in any way). However, from the peanut gallery, a man sticks up for Beau, even says he did a lot of things because “he was afraid,” and then the same guy adding context and disagreement falls to his death in a very Midsommar way. Like film critics, neither side is right or wrong, and I think Ari Aster isn’t asking for love for this film, but like you said of Everything, Everywhere All at Once, “you just gotta let it wash over you”rather than trying to pick it apart (even though there is MUCH to analyze). Maybe a stretch, but that last set piece definitely appeared to be a movie theater, and it almost felt like we, the audience, were staring at ourselves and making judgment calls about Beau or his journey that may or may not have been “correct.” That and the kind of “Truman Show” aspect of so much of his life definitely added to my feelings of the final sequence being a critique, a judgment of us as we watch this poor man’s most embarrassing, vulnerable moments and laugh at the absurdity of it, knowing by that point that he’s been a victim of a truly manipulative and abusive upbringing that’s driven him as far from his mother’s life and lifestyle as he can get. And that makes it quite sad, even though we’ve spent much of the film laughing at a mentally ill man suffering more with each passing scene, with some disturbing physical suffering as well. Kudos to Ari Aster and a phenomenal cast and crew!

Wow… once again I revisited this review after watching the film, and you guys NAILED it! I was right there with Joseph in that I was just letting the story wash over me, and when the third act hits I was blown away! All of the performances in this movie were amazing, the cuts and transitions into and out of scenes were excellent in helping elicit the dreamlike sensation that allows the audience to go along with the nightmare of the finale… and my favorite moment was the end and the credits rolling over the people of the colosseum “leaving the theater”, the hushed and mumbled chatter you would hear as they exit brought back memories of the sounds you would hear after watching a great film or live performance in person. Loved this experience, and again you guys killed it with the review. Thanks again!

4 minutes into your review and I had to leave a comment!! I saw it last night - my boyfriend wanted to walk out 30 minutes into it and I absolutely love it. Definitely still processing wtf I watched... The scene with with the mother at her house toward the end of the film almost sent me into a panic attack. Her dialogue brought me right back to what it was like to live with a narcissistic abuser. The guilting, the manipulation, the gaslighting, and the lengths they will go to pull you back into their grasp after you've already left. GOOD LORD that made my chest tighten. Also kind of reminded me of a spider tangling you into its web... The spider imagery was interesting to me. I took it as the anxiety or guilt in Beau's life being very much present, but hiding and nesting in plain sight - just like the spider did in the first pan around his apartment as it crawled its way under the couch as he entered the room. Caught the missing spider poster in the apartment hallway not too long after that and furiously scribbled that into my notes. The spider (to me) kind of kicked off Beau's journey in the movie too. When he was taking his bath and the spider crawled onto the face of the guy all spider-manned up on the ceiling making him fall onto Beau. It's from there that Beau is forced into directly into all of the crazy scenarios and directly confronting his anxiety of going home. Oh and the little spider legs coming out of the "dad" (lmao) reminded me of John Carpenter's The Thing! Idk if that made any sense but I love y'all and I appreciate the review

Super late to this review but I appreciate it so much. It helps give context to certain parts that eluded me while watching yesterday. I especially appreciate Nick’s reference to “Possession” because it’s a comparison I also started to make but second-guessed myself . The comparison isn’t perfect but this movie felt like a continuation of “Possession” with Patti’s character being Adjani’s character and Joaquin being Adjani’s son in the movie. Of course because of the husband/d!ck monster in the attic that was born of the mom’s frustrations, but also the repetition of water and particularly bath tubs as a kind of safe space (the son in Possession “escapes” into the bathtub at the end.) One other thing- Joaquin’s character never really cut ties with his Mom as an adult because he’s living in one of her housing projects. He’s still in her womb in a sense.

Incredible review!

Just saw this tonight, wowza it was cray cray, I was only 1 in the theater opening night so i dont think its gonna do well. It was nuts but i liked it 8 out of 10.

There’s no way I can explain how much I categorically despise artistic films! Through every phase of my life, artistic filmmaking was just not my jam. I appreciate it for what it is and I will occasionally watch a new movie of that category, but if I had to choose, I do prefer very old artistic films. I didn’t say this just to bump your KZfaq score (does anyone really know how that works?!) I want to complement you both on your witty banter regarding this particular movie! You made it actually sound somewhat endearing! As a mother of grown children, with children of their own, I also can relate to the discussion at the end: it seemed so easy to blame my parents, particularly my mother, for everything when I was in the hateful teen years! But wouldn’t you know it, not long into having my own husband & babies and my parents, but especially my mother has become a freaking genius! Where were these people all my life?!😊 Then I got the joke when my precious little angel became names a good Southern Christian MawMaw isn’t gonna say here, but the Lord knows what I mean! My dad said teenagers are God’s gift to parents because when they are that age it’s about time to graduate high school and go to college or to the military or at least work! We are HAPPY to boot them out because they are teenagers! But if they had stayed our precious little angels, there’s no way we could let them go! And that’s just not the natural progression of the life of a child into adulthood! They must get there and good parents can take pride in helping them get there! Making them be an adult, but its ok to be in the background NOT TO MEDDLE OR MANIPULATE! Just guide with love! Hard truths, but never ending, unconditional love! I just saw this movie and was amazed from beginning to end. I absolutely love this weird film genre and it was so beautifully shot. A dream and a nightmare at the same time

Im convinced when Beau is hit with the van, he "dies" and his brain is making up all the events that occur afterward and its almost like a self judgement as his brain is dying. Almost like a "life flash before your eyes" kind of experience.

I'm glad there are some people that enjoyed this and apparently understood it. This movie was a complete mess of nonsense for me. Went right over my head. No way I'm watching this a second time.

I’m not going to lie the trailer for this scared me away and I wasn’t sure what to think but I trust y’all’s review so I’ll give it a chance.

I have no clue what to think after just watching. I love ari aster and was mostly on board with the first half and its atmosphere but the entire woods play/animated section was unwatchable for me. And then the ending just rubbed me the wrong way. It felt forced but also out of place and a different movie altogether. But at the same time, i do see what you mean about letting it wash over me, although there is a good 50 minutes+ of nonsense that I wouldn't want to sit through again.

I heard mixed reviews of this movie and thought I'd pass but your thoughts are tempting me to see it. 😂

I'm shocked both of you liked this. This film is right up my alley-I loved Hereditary because of how fucked up it made me feel about my own family, I deeply appreciated Midsommar because it gave me catharsis, it made me feel catharsis, but this film... oof. There is a moment in the film when Beau stands up and says "That is me", and although I do relate to the character and the story, I was not ready to accept any type of parallels between me and this story, and maybe that's the point; maybe this film is supposed to subconsciously demoralize and belittle the viewer who can see some of their own failures in Beau - like, being an absentee son in a religiously confused family, or being the man of the house once the father is gone, or not maturing to the standard they see around them, or being irrationally (or rationally) afraid of the world around them, missing, and needing comfort, etc. This movie is mommy issues the movie.... at least upon first viewing it feels that way. I don't know when I'll see this film again but I honestly hope it's not too soon.
