Exactly! I liked Smile but can’t love it as I think it’s a tad overhyped when it wouldn’t be here without Ring/it follows. It’s one of the most derived horror films I’ve ever seen. Also taking from (don’t know of Truth or Dare counts) fallen, lights out, badabook, drag me to hell.

This reminds me a little of Fallen, with Denzel too! Especially the ending you described. Just a theory…that Rose had that tiny sip of wine because she has a fear of having the disease of addiction, like her mom. Her entire career could be an attempt to maintain control, as opposed to the childhood she had. Maybe I’m just making up my own backstory! 😅

Something missed is everyone who died at the hand of the entity, they already had first hand experience with trauma when they were younger, not just Rose (both grad student and prof saw loved ones die). The line "your mind is so inviting" is a nod to their weakened minds and how the suicide they witness in their adult years at the hands of the demon compounds their trauma, they are not as equipped to handle it, as say a normally developed adult who has an advantage in processing things without having PTSD triggered. Another thing is, Rose and us go through most of the movie thinking of the entity as am external presence that is coming for her, rather than at the end where it masquerades as Joel and tells her it will always be with her, and it's in her mind, you come to fully realize it was never external, always internal, and ready to kill her whenever it felt like. The scene of it entering her at the end wasn't actually depicting it entering, more like it was taking control where it had already been lurking.

Interesting theory. I still think it's an outside thing thou, till to the point it crawled into her. Something similar happened with her patient. She starts choking and after Rose calling for help she just stands there and she reacts the same way too, like something coming towards her. You even can hear the entity going in on the recording, assuming it's real. Only watched it once thou, finished 5 minutes ago so might be wrong 😌
@lawnerd9263
@lawnerd9263 Жыл бұрын
@@RainisaurusRox It’s both. It starts messing with their head (interior) after each victim witnesses the suicide, and then it enters each victim (exterior) right before it destroys them mentally - when it takes over their body - and then physically - when it forces them to commit suicide. As Rose says, “maybe it’s not suicide [explanation of how grad student was not suicidal and terrified (she didn’t want to die)] and then at the end, everything about her changed. It was like the person I’d been talking to was gone.” The evil entity wears the victim’s husk and forces their mouth into a smile, which is why it’s a Duchenne smile plus the evil glimmer; it’s feeding off the eye witness’s trauma. There’s a lot of parallel and mirror shots (two of Rose in front of a mirror, the side shot of her talking to the imprisoned accountant, and it symbolizes a lot of things (the private, vulnerable self/ the public, masking self, etc.) but one thing I think of is how before the entity jumps from one person to the next, two traumatized people face each other, psychological twins, and then one further traumatizes the other. Traumatized people traumatize people, without meaning to sometimes. Sometimes Kevin Kleppy made them do it! (He was CREEPY af in this movie. So glad they didn’t go CGI with the demon.)

After the lil disagreement in the “Blonde” review, it’s a relief to see our parents back to agreeing 💕. I enjoyed this one. A movie doesn’t always need to be original if it makes me care about the characters, which this does. You both mentioned a ton of other good horror films during the review. “The Empty Man” was criminally ignored when it was released 😔 Oh! Great editing👍👍

Yes original doesn’t really matter when it comes to how it will affect the viewer personally, but it’s MORE of it affecting how the film or franchise will hold up in the future generations

There's absolutely no trigger warnings on the film itself, and both me and my friend who I went to see it with, experienced a visceral reaction to the overall trauma themes of Smile. In an empty theater, just a movie showing a breakdown with steps you've seen yourself take and almost go down, with no positive ending. If you're anyone who has experienced self-destructive thoughts or past actions, the portrayal of her striking out and scaring away all of her loved ones; that's what's still scaring us way more than any of the jumpscares (。ŏ﹏ŏ)
@kjdover1102

Not to mention surprise punches in the gut of stress, paranoia, denial of help, minor self harm (she nervously bites her cuticles and it was too visceral sitting there without expecting it), isolation, plus the dude figures out the secrets of the movie for us, with 0 payout on that :^/

This might be the first film in years that could possibly scare me. LOL. I took psychology a while ago and I learned that repeat nightmares are called night terrors and it only happens to children. I had a reoccurring night terror that took place in the basement of my now childhood home. Kept having the SAME darn dream to a point I was afraid to sleep. These pair of small brown legs (shaped as a toilet seat) with hair in between them…wobbled as it walked and had a weird walking noise . Had NO eyes but could somehow see me and would chase me. Sometimes my dream would start with me already in the basement and I could hear it coming down the stairs. Sad I remember this.

Okay I watched this movie last night. And HOLY SHIT I can’t believe how much I liked it! It was creepy, not corny at all, like you guys said it was very smart and I loved the commentary about therapy and how mental health is treated with this sort of patronizing arrogance. The end SHOOK ME. They really had me thinking a horror film was about to have a good satisfying ending and no. I was right there with rose baffled that she was still at the same house 🥲 amazing. When it comes out on streaming I’m definitely rewatching.

I had the same thoughts in comparison to The Babadook, and that the mother trauma/grad student trauma aren't really related in the storyline. For me, this made the entire "face the monster" sequence a distraction. As good of a movie as Smile is, it could have been far better if the director had picked whether this was a movie about Rose's personal trauma, or if this was a movie about a monster-curse-chain mechanism. I would prefer the former, as the opening scene and Sosie Bacon's performance align so well with it.

Ok, so I’m in the middle of watching Fallen cause Nick mentioned it. I’ve known about it, but never bothered to watch it cause it didn’t get very good reviews. So far I’m entertained. I love me some Denzel and John Goodman. But when you get Donald Sutherland in what seems like a really peripheral role- you just know he’s gonna have a major role to play in the big finale. And the weird pov color changes, dramatic music and camera angles. So cliche now. But, I’m still havin’ fun! Thanks for reminding me.

it’s seems too scary. i still have flashbacks from the movie split released in 2016. these psychological horrors are too much for me. 😳 at least in split her traumas saved her…

@Fish Jelly Movie Review thank you for reviewing this before I made any decision too see it. Bc I WANT it to be BAD bc scary smiles are trauma material for me. Just the right smile can just represent evil.

Visuals were good. Audio was definitely added to the disturbed feeling. Ending really sucked we were rooting for Joel to survive! Good review!

I thought that some scenes were a little too loud. Which scared me more than the movie. I did enjoy the movie though; it just made me extremely uncomfortable.

I think a sequel could explore how the curse would work if the new witness was someone so dead inside that they’re not really capable of being traumatized by new experiences. Like someone who is either at the absolute edge of clinical depression and just too detached to even register new trauma or even someone who is naturally resistant to trauma like someone on the psychopath spectrum. Like that’s a question i genuinely have for the screenwriter-what does he envision happening if the new witness observes this horrific mutilation suicide and is just like not at all reactive? Might be a neat way to break the “wash, rinse, repeat” horror franchises usually follow.

Loved the first quarter, then thought it fell off the rails a bit until the end, but another solid horror movie for '22. Good year

Smile feels like an Italian horror movie esp. from the opening and the birthday party scene. I was totally ok with that. WHY does SMILE and BARBARIAN share so many of the exact same elements. I was hoping for more from Smile and not an almost (without giving any spoilers) copy of the last act of Barbarian. The "you know what" in both movies is almost identical. I'd love to hear your view on what I've brought up about this movie.
