Chilly morning in Georgia! The house was built in 1815 in a typical I frame house which is very common in the south then expanded on to accommodate a large family and given the Victorian features in the late 1800’s! One of my favorite houses I have ever had the pleasure of filming! I loved everything about this place!! Thanks for watching! Happy new year too everyone!!

The bathroom upstairs was originally a maid's bedroom. That's why she had her own staircase down to the kitchen. And the small room at the beginning with the window benches may have been a music room. There would have been a piano in there, and the benches were for the violinists and flautists with their music stands in front of them--musical accompaniment for entertaining. I know of another old mansion that had the same type of room, and the owners told me what it was. Lovely old home. Heartbreaking to see the lack of interest in preserving it.

This house is interesting in that it would have been built before the Victorian era, before the curved porches and gingerbread. Six over windows are used in Federal (Colonial) style houses, which is what this one originally was. It was heavily remodeled in the late 1800s when the towers, porch and interior gingerbread details would have been added. The doorknob you thought was from the '20s or '30s is actually from the 1800s. Amazing that all the mirrors in the fireplaces are still intact and not vandalized. I hope the vandals never find it.

greyeaglem, Would you be able to advise about restoring early 1800s Georgia houses?
@greyeaglem
@greyeaglem 3 жыл бұрын
@@chalcedony6858 I just have an amateur level interest in architecture. I wish I had studied it, but I didn't. If you have a project like that the best advice I could give would be to do all the research you can about that era. If you hire people to work on it, try to find ones that are also interested in architecture. A lot of damage gets done by people not caring about maintaining the integrity of the original design and often because it adds a lot of cost to the project. I know a guy who did a restoration that cost more than the house did. He does have a beautiful house now though. He even had stained glass pieces made for windows that were copies of designs from a local stained glass company from the 1800s. He also found a place that still makes the push button electric switches that were original to the house. He had a lot of fun finding companies that could copy light fixtures, etc. for him.

For that age ..was thinking federal style too. I wonder what it originally looked like.
@greyeaglem
@greyeaglem 3 жыл бұрын
@@vannjunkin8041 Now I'm not so sure it was remodeled. I have seen another video since then of another brick house that is part federal, part Queen Ann and part gothic. At first I thought it was built onto, but now I'm thinking it was built all at once with mixed styles because it has 6 over windows throughout. I may be wrong though because it also had the windows that come all the way down to the floor and that was more of an antebellum thing. Really hard to say. If part of the house has 6 over windows and the other part is single or two pane windows, then it's likely colonial with an addition.

Whoever built this house 200 years ago had some money. That house is outstanding and the woodwork is exquisite. This isnthe time I wish I was rich to rehab this beautiful home. Most southern homes don't have basements because of the low country being below the water table. They usually built their homes higher off the ground to prevent flooding.

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Is this home located on what they call the Magnolia Trail? It looks like they were trying to get the paint off the wood - I see that in several areas. That fancy ceiling was not originally painted. What is awesome is most of the windows are intact. When the home was built - the carpenters took great pride in their work. You don't find that much anymore. It looks like someone was living there while trying to renovate the home. The foundation seems to be in pretty good condition. That is a plus.

If the house is as old as you say it is then it went through a major Remodel and modernization in the 1890s. The turrets gingerbread and a witches cap Rubes are very Queen Anne. Inside several of the mantles were apparently changed. The mantle in the dining room and the ceiling there look also to be Circa 1890s. The white mantle is colonial revival again Circa 1890s. The staircase and stairwell Hall AR aesthetic movement with Japanese influence again Circa 1890s.

The views of the exterior had me catching my breath---and just the first sight of the interior had me holding it. Tongue and Groove ceilings, each fireplace as beautiful as the last, incredibly intricate parquet floor (reminiscent of ancient mosaic tile) in the entrance hall, and that wonderful staircase... I always like the workmanship of the windows of these old places, with their prisms, etched or colored glass, and the designs of the panes. (While I can understand the uninspired new kitchen and bathroom appurtenances---cabinets, plumbing, and such---I know there are "New-Old" replacements for the originals available, but...) I think this is another home I'll have to "revisit." Thank you so much. Stay safe, everybody.

They are called Pocket doors. Houses that old HAD fireplaces in each room because they didn't have central heat or radiators. It sits off the ground so far to allow breezes to keep the house cool in the summer. Those were not "porches" but turret rooms often used as conservatory or sun rooms, or small sitting rooms.

Thank you ❤️ Greetings to you and a belated Happy New Year 2021. All the best! Johnny Montreal Canada.

The most beautifully intricate house I've seen to date. Such exquisite details. I hope it doesn't go into decay and that someone would lovingly restore it. I sure would if I had the resources! Why can't builders build such beauty in homes anymore? Its a lost art. 🥺

All that beautiful carved wood, newel posts, banisters! And real parquet floors! And door knobs and doors! I wonder what the woods ate that were used. It’s such a shame that no one will buy and restore a beauty like this. You will never see such craftsmanship again.

Anything on this house I can lookup? Families? I’m really curious about this. It’s survived over 200 years. I can’t believe that home’s abandoned. It obviously has had much love through the years.

The home really became more run down in the 2000s. When I was a child I thought it was amazing and called it the gingerbread house. It makes me sad to see it this way.

I love the way you look at a place such as this. How the architect is in in and how you see the beautiful it once was and not all the crap that has been left behind. i think you truly have a heart for old homes. this was a grand home at one time. your lighting was not good. it was sorta on the white side. just to let ya know. I do in joy your page.

That ceiling with all the squares is called a coffered ceiling. "A coffer in architecture is a series of sunken panels in the shape of a square, rectangle, or octagon in a ceiling, soffit, or vault."

Sooooo, 9 times outta 10 this property is being fought over as so many are here. I'm from South Georgia and there are ALOT of houses like this gem that are tied up in probate.

If they do not sort themselves out, a lot of good houses will be lost to decay or fire.

Absolutely @SarahStrong , I live in a rural area. And I can't count how many homes here are tied up. And most of the folks don't need the house. BUT, in the county I live in NO ONE sells property. My home was built in 1902, and my family has lived here since the town, county was formed. Our "family" home place can never be sold nor can money be borrowed against it.

Not being fought over. The person who bought this house was renovating in back in the 90s. A friend I know was helping him. He died suddenly and the house was eventually sold. It’s been empty for years and my friend has no further info on it. It’s just sitting going to decay. But there’s similar houses in this old town similar to this house being bought, renovated and restored. I’m hoping this house will be saved too.
