*Navel Orange?
Oranges are mainly used as fresh fruit due to their high sugar content and low sourness.
Navel means ‘navel’, and is named so because the bottom of the stem is shaped like a navel. Oranges were spread from India, their place of origin, to Portugal and became Valencia oranges, and those spread to Brazil spread back to the United States and became navel oranges. In the early 19th century, a mutant appeared in an orange tree in Brazil, producing seedless oranges. It is said that all modern-day navel oranges are derived from this mutant.
Unlike Valencia oranges, it is characterized by having no seeds. It has a high sugar content and low sourness, but has less juice than Valencia oranges, so it is mainly used for fresh fruit rather than juice. The skin is easily peeled off and divided into pieces, making it easy to eat anywhere. Like other oranges, it is rich in vitamin C, with 60 mg per 100 mg of flesh, which is more than Valencia oranges (40 mg). This variety is mainly grown in California, a state famous for orange production. In the northern hemisphere, such as the United States, it is harvested from November to May of the following year, and in the southern hemisphere, such as South Africa, it is harvested from April to September.
