As an 18 year old Blues guitar player 45 years ago, I had my life ruined by Leo Kottke's 6 and 12 String Tacoma record. After 10 years of playing an old D-28 12, I put it away. I picked it up again 3 months ago. Cruising the Internet, I came upon your craft. All my memories of my old man and his 78's of Louis Armstrong and his Hot 5 came back to me. I'm playing along to your BeeBop tutorials and having the time of my life. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Wow! Everybody struggles with hitting as many chord tones as possible while stumbeling through those rapid rythm changes - and you just melt it down do good ole blues and sound so much cooler! Btw. You sure got an AMAZING groove in your fingers!

Wow! I've been 'stuck' when it comes to the blues having come from a classical sax and lead sheet reading tradition at the piano (folk songs, hit parade...). I think my next move is to put together a bass line for Rhythm changes and take it from there with melodic clusters, like what I see you do in this video. Though I'm not a singer, I will try to sing what I play. What you offer in your videos is super useful and inspirational. There might just be hope for me, after all...I think. ;) Thanks!

Started with Root Position 'OOmpa 2Feel plus Melody', then I learned the left Hand Walking, then Right Hand comping in Section A and B. Then I treated myself with that cool Ending you demonstrated in the 'Accompaning yourself' Vid (to show off a bit). 4 Weeks, daily, many Hours... Now I'm here and I dig your great Feel and Taste. Classic bluesy lines and no cliché cocktail style. Cheers, now back to 'what would BB (or Albert or Freddy) King do'!

the first melody i ever memorized for rythm changes is the theme for the great old cartoon show the flintstones. The whole theme is based on rythm changes. Its not the blues,but if you grew up on flintstones it should be easy and fun .Yaba DabaDoo!

I am learning the head to Confirmation, played the blues lick in bar 5 and instantly recognized it from when i heard it on this video! Think I'm starting to internalize some bop language :)

This reminds me more of Grant Green that BB King. What would Grant Green play? Grant Green uses these sorts of phrases that sort of 'drag' behind the time feel. Check out GG's Blues for Juanita. I'm feeling some of your phrasing like it's almost a quarter note triplet? There's 6 quarter note triplets in a bar and obviously 8 eighth notes. Quarter note triplets are therefore only 25% slower than regular 8th notes - A quarter note triplet can be morphed to sound like it's a 'lazy' 8th note. Cool phrasing. I love this type of phrasing where certain notes are 'dragged' behind the feel or lag behind the feel - very, very cool sound...

I always wonder why in most compositions and most piano players prefer to rhythm with the left hand, often... I'm writing a set of new piano compositions, but as single oriented guitar player I can compose without such restrictions I see a lot of habits in keyboard videos. Although I'm a 0 player and a piano lover. What Ive figured out past some months is the invisible hands, a kind of third hand to strike on middle gap or a bass chord during intervals, again even without playing...

Good video. But what did you mean by the term “hard bop” at 5:20? My understanding of hard bop was a movement bringing more dance friendly rhythms and bluesy sounds into bebop.

Hi Aimee, was wondering in regard to jazz parlance, when the b5 went out of fashion and why? I'm seeing and hearing #4 as part of the terminology now, and I'm curious as to the thinking behind it? :-)

This question will exploit my ignorance, but are blues lines considered bebop? I'm not sure I know what bebop actually is, definition wise. When I think bebop I think lines like on Donna Lee or I've Got Rythm. So, at the risk of looking stupid Aimee, could you define bebop for me? I come from a country/gospel background so this explains my limited knowledge somewhat. 😜 Thank you

BB King switch from minor and major thirds like no other (plus many other things)!! Because of His taste..and also He can bend strings...you Keyboardists don't!! Anyway great Video, ciao from Italy.

I would like very much if you just keep playing. You are a good teacher, but - what would B. B. do? He would play ;) And you just have so much zen or presence in your voice, I hear a whole big band in just your right hand end your voice - plus the rhythm feels, how shall I put it, just right. I follow you on the tube for just the groove. No mistake, it's just right. A danish musician and writer said, when a samba is right, there's nothing you can say about it. But when it's wrong, there are hundreds of suggestions that come to mind. Or something to that effect. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, when you speak I have an opinion, as a musician. And most often I agree and learn good stuff. But when you play and sing, I have nothing to say - I just wish you wouldn't stop. So please, do a session, if you like, with just that really sweet sound and that increadibly cool feeling! You are the Norah Jones of jazz with Count Basie in your voice, full of presence like Joao Gilberto & Stan Getz. I very much enjoy it, in case of any possible misunderstanding. This is NOT about you looking as good as you play, this is more like a request for the latter, as the former is out of reach of common sense ;)
