In today’s episode, Becket chats with Dr. David Berlinski on his new book, Science After Babel. They discuss the deep flaws in Darwin’s theory of evolution, free will, and God.
David Berlinski received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Princeton University and was later a postdoctoral fellow in mathematics and molecular biology at Columbia University. He is currently a Senior Fellow at Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. Dr. Berlinski has authored works on systems analysis, differential topology, theoretical biology, analytic philosophy, and the philosophy of mathematics, as well as three novels. He has also taught philosophy, mathematics and English at such universities as Stanford, Rutgers, the City University of New York and the Universite de Paris. In addition, he has held research fellowships at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria and the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES) in France.
He is author of numerous books, including A Tour of the Calculus (Pantheon 1996), The Advent of the Algorithm (2000, Harcourt Brace), Newton's Gift (The Free Press 2000), The Secrets of the Vaulted Sky (Harcourt, October 2003), A Short History of Mathematics for the Modern Library series at Random House (2004), The Devil's Delusion: Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions (Crown Forum, 2008), and The King of Infinite Space: Euclid and His Elements (Basic Books, 2013), Human Nature (and Science After Babel (Discovery Institute Press, 2023).

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

Berlinski was the one weapon I used against agnostics and atheists. If an agnostic (I don't know if he is converted or not) can disprove Dawkins with the "Devil's Delusion" it helped me at least get them to see they were being intellectually dishonest. Berlinski even if he is a staunch agnostic has helped turn non believers into believers. I wish he would profess Christ and make his testimony known to all. I would love to sit with him in heaven and "learn" his story from himself. Thanks Becket, another great guest, I subscribed last week. See if you can get Eric Metaxas on, you both would have a riot and give me a link to send my nephew who is really on fire for Christ right now. Thanks!!! CJ

@@BecketCook By the way, evolution is a fact. Start with BioLogos referenced below. It's a Christian organisation. Leave the biology to the experts. Francisco Ayala, a renowned evolutionary biologist and recipient of the National Medal of Science and the 2010 Templeton Prize *(and a former Dominican priest),* recently stated the consensus of the field in these terms [Ayala2010, pg. 49-50]: *The overwhelming majority of biologists accept evolution. Those who know professionally the evidence for evolution* ***cannot deny it.*** *Scientists agree that the evolutionary origin of animals and plants is a scientific conclusion* ***beyond reasonable doubt.*** *The evidence is compelling and all-encompassing because it comes from all biological disciplines including those that did not exist in Darwin's time.* In the second half of the nineteenth century, Darwin and other biologists obtained convincing evidence from a variety of disciplines, which had reached early maturity during the nineteenth century: *anatomy, embryology, biogeography, geology, and paleontology. Since Darwin's time, the evidence for evolution* ***has become much stronger and more comprehensive,*** coming not only from traditional sources but also from recent disciplines such as *genetics, biochemistry, ecology, ethology, neurobiology, and molecular biology.* ... ***Because the evidence is so overwhelming,*** ... evidence for evolution no longer engages the interest of biologists except when explaining evolution to the public or arguing with those who refuse to accept evolution. Although not sought and ***no longer needed,*** the evidence for the fact of evolution continues to accumulate. *"How many scientists question evolution? - sciencemeetsreligion.org"* "As someone who's had the privilege of leading the human genome project, I've had the opportunity to study our own DNA instruction book at a level of detail that was never really possible before. It's also now been possible to compare our DNA with that of many other species. ***The evidence supporting the idea that all living things are descended from a common ancestor is truly overwhelming.*** *I would not necessarily wish that to be so, as a Bible-believing Christian. But it is so. It does not serve faith well to try to deny that."* ***"Yes, evolution by descent from a common ancestor is clearly true.*** If there was any lingering doubt about the evidence from the fossil record, the study of DNA provides the strongest possible proof of our relatedness to all other living things." - Dr Francis Collins. Former head of the Human Genome Project and a Christian. ------------------------------------------------------------------ In addition, look up the below articles: *"What is the evidence for evolution? - Common-questions - BioLogos"* (A Christian organisation) Watch *"DNA Evidence that Humans and Chimpanzees Share a Common Ancestor : Endogenous Retroviruses - Stated Clearly"* (Look for Dr Francis Collins at the end of the video, who was the former head of The Human Genome Project and is a Christian) *"Evolution: Library: Human Chromosome 2"* Watch *"Ken Miller on Human Evolution" - Kurpalac* (Kenneth Miller is a theist) *"Why scientists dismiss 'intelligent design' - Science"* *"15 Answers to Creationist Nonsense - Scientific American"* *"Evolution: 24 myths and misconceptions | New Scientist"* *"What the Scientific Community Says about Evolution and Intelligent Design | American Civil Liberties Union"* *"The intellectual vacuity of mathematical arguments against evolution - Why Evolution Is True"* *"Once again: misguided calls for a thorough revamping of evolutionary biology - Why Evolution Is True"* *"Confessions of a former creationist - Trees In Space"*

@@lizadowning4389 complete and utter nonsense. There is ZERO "observable" evidence of macro evolution. Do species make small adaptation? Absolutely. What is funny is that Darwin himself, were he alive today wouldn't even believe his own theory! The missing links that he predicted would be discovered, and that his theory hung on, have never been found. Not to mention the new discoveries that have made contemporary scientists doubt his theory.

David Berlinski is fun no matter the place or the time. I've only had the pleasure of hearing the man via the Internet, and that is more than likely how that will remain. But do yourself a favour here Beckett, have this man on your show a few more times if he is available and willing. There is a mind there well worth traversing, a world-class mind, and, he is both charming, and funny, a tad naughty also if he is comfortable with his audience, singular or larger! A young man could do himself a lot of good making time to do a study of Mr Berlinski's many Internet engagements. A mind that is still relatively still open to learning at 80 + is a mind to be both weighed, and enjoyed whether one agrees, or disagrees, with whatever he is talking and/or musing about. I was particularly entertained with his response to you re the Priest Class, being able to write, "we Priests must stick together, he mused with a rye smile. The man has humour, but often draped in subtlety. I watched Joe Rogan interview Prof Brian Cox recently, Berlinski is right, Science is convinced itself that it has disproven God, I got that very well proven to me Brian Cox, but after listening to him on the topic it was very clear to me that Science most certainly not proven the non-existence of God, far from it, if what I heard discussed by Rogan and Cox is anything to go by. Christians especially need to stop believing that Science has won the God debate, I suspect that is one of the reasons so many people who call themselves Christian also buy Darwinism as a done deal, when that could not be further from the truth! I was pleased to hear Dr Berlinski had dedicated his latest book to Stephen Meyer, there to you have a world-class mind, and obviously a world-class friendship where Dr Berlinski is concerned. Put's me in mind of Berlinski's humourous comment re the Priestly class sticking together!

The general theme of his ilk is to discuss the many things we don't know - which is a lot (which is why thousands of scientists continue studies around the world) but leave out the context of the things we *do know*. So he tries to argue that these unknown things somehow refute the idea. However you can't really make any conclusions on the basis not knowing something.

God bless you, Becket - it's July and I am going to have another July dedicated to praying for wonderful you. I appreciate you, your compassion, your outreach, your love of the truth, your encouragement, your God given interview skills. Among my requests are that you will be refreshed in the Lord, I pray about the beneficial aspect of trials, for revelations and Becket, 😏 I leave the praying for patience to you. Should you happen to think about me and my July would you pray for our son Trevor and our daughter who have the same and a variation of the same testimony you came out of. You have encouraged me so much. Now let's stay mindful of your extraordinary July and of the willingness of our Lord to impact our hearts, our minds and our lives.

Hi Becket, thank you for having Dr. Berlinski on your show yesterday. I found the show thought provoking, sometimes humorous, mixed with serious commentary about Darwinism, which he basically disagrees with, and that's a good thing. I am happy with the Doctor's close friendship with Stephen Meyer, and I pray that this friendship might help lead Dr. Berlinski to the Gospel, and the saving grace of Jesus Christ. I will be perfectly honest here, my greatest sin regarding envy, has been for many decades, with those of you who are extremely proficient in complex mathematics. The only other folks that cause me greater externation are those who can work complex calculus equations and also, for example, explain how the Vikings influenced Europe and the British Isles. lol Perhaps being super intelligent tends to be like a weight in some people's thought processes. Dr. Berlinski, on some level, reminds me of Jordan Petersen, so close, but yet so far. I am not putting these men down, or judging them, but I have a hard time with such intelligent men not putting as much study with: a)Biblical Prophesies, b)Scriptures, c)Archeological finds from the last five decades, d)Study of manuscripts, i.e. the Dead Sea Scrolls. I could be very wrong about this, and I am walking in someone else's shoes here, but I cannot help feeling that if they spent only a quarter of the time studying these areas, as they do in the scientific realm, they might just find what they are looking for, as they lean toward an intelligent designer/creator. My apologies for making my post so long, Becket. Watching your interview with Dr. Berlinski, I kept thinking, "I've seen this fellow before, and then it hit me, Ben Stein! I just had to go back and watch, "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed." Same mannerisms, same relaxed style, the arm over the head, yes it was him, just a bit older. I really could not tell that Dr. Berlinski had changed spiritually, or had any new revelations regarding Jesus, though I could be wrong about that. It had been a while since I had watched, "Expelled" and I had forgotten the "we could have been grown on the backs of crystals" or that we could have been "seeded here, by means of Pan-Spermia, meaning aliens brought us here. However, the question remains, who made the aliens? One thing I did notice was that both Dr. Berlinski and Ben recognize the similarities between "Social Darwinism," the survival of the fittest, and Hitler's Übermenschen, and the superiority of the Aryan race, "The stronger race asserts his will, thus only the stronger survive. It's the Law of Nature." - Adolf Hitler This is an area that even Richard Dawkins steers away from, as does almost every proponent of Evolution. They gloss over the original title of Darwin's first edition, " On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life (1859)" It is so horrendous that after the Civil War, the theory of Eugenics reared it's ugly head, and many pseudo scientists, and spiritualists embarrassed the theory , including H.P. Blavatsky, with her, lower "root races." Annie Bessant' and Alice Bailey, along with Margaret Sanger also believed in racial hygiene, and the superiority of the white race. It is really good to hear men like Dr. Berlinski bring these issues up. With all that I have said in this lengthy post, what I truly pray for, is for is that Dr. Berlinski along with other, "pro-designer, non evolutionist" scientists do, is to ask Jesus to forgive them of their sins, so that they too can, "Taste and see that the LORD is good. How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!" Psalm 34 : 8. Until then, and I am taking this out of context, and I am not completely sure what the Lord meant by the passage, "Those who are not against us, are for us." However, I think it fits nicely here. God bless Dr. Berlinski, and guide him to the Light of the world and the saving grace of Jesus, "You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:14). Great show Becket! God Bless!

As a Christian, I understand the difficulty with the idea evolution and how it throws a wrench into our understanding of God's Word. But I also believe that we should not be afraid of the truth. Unfortunately, Dr. Berlinski's arguments can easily be refuted by those with greater expertise. I would prefer to see someone like Frank Collins (who is a Christian and the father of the human genome) discuss how evolution and genetics fit into our understanding of Christianity.

Evolution is based on beneficial genetic mutations, yet 99.9% of genetic mutations are detrimental to the living organism. There are many valid, common sense objections to evolution, you don't need to be an "expert"! Think of the giraffe's long neck, allowing to reach high leaves when there's not enough grass on the ground. The long neck however should cause a rush of blood to the head whenever the giraffe bends its neck. Yet it doesn't because of a sophisticated mechanism that stops the rush of blood. Said mechanism would be useless without the long neck. The long neck cannot function without the mechanism. They are both needed, so if evolution was true, some giraffes would have evolved a long neck to reach higher leaves while at the same time, evolving a mechanism to regulate the blood flow, and all by pure chance! A child wouldn't believe it. And there are many other examples, the way whales suckle their young above water level, etc.

Evolution is a religious belief. There is absolutely no scientific way to explain it. It is mathematically impossible. Asking for “Christian Evolution “ is like saying Christians should believe 2+2=5 and fit it into our doctrine so we can fit into modern culture.

I quote David Berlinski"we can't set up a computer and create something of biological like complexity how come we cannot see the unfolding of an evolutionary process the way we can see the unfolding of an evolutionary process in physics "The answer M.Berliski is that life is reflexive.Reflexivity is the key, and evolution & Darwin are unbreakable
