Fantasy 87 yes! Jane was known for having a sharp wit, which actually drove away men of that time. She wrote Pride and Prejudice in the same year that she met and was forced to part with Tom and she wanted a heroine in similar circumstances to herself to succeed in love like she unfortunately never did.

It's really sad when you think about it. She didn't marry Tom. She never married. She died at 41. And yet her novels are all about love and happy endings, the heroine winning the heart of the rich hero. But she had a short life and her sister Cassandra never married. Just sad. Real life compared to books seems lacking.

Tabby Roberts No, he was not rich. Tom Lefroy came from a poor family and he had 9 siblings and parents that totally depend on him, financially. He was taken care by his uncle who was a judge, that gave him money. He sent his uncle's money to his family, secretly, to support their life back there in Ireland. In this movie it's described that when Jane found out about this fact, she thought that if they got married, their circumstances will destroy their love slowly, because Jane was also poor and had to depend on him too. She thought that they could never make it. So she decided that they can't be together. It's beautiful, realistic and tragic in one package.
@JT-hs9or
@JT-hs9or 7 жыл бұрын
But yes, in this movie it seems like he was actually rich by inheritance. In one part of this movie, his uncle told him that his mother (his uncle's sister) was actually born rich. But later in her life she decided to marry a poor guy, and then become poor too.

I love her novels. She's the author made me fell in love with literature. She's also my reminder that not everyone affords a romance. She's all about flowers and heart, love and all. But she dies young, and alone, she didn't even got to finish her last book. From Jane, I'm ready to believe that.....

Yes I had the same thought once. When you get your heart broken, time will heal and erase everything and you will find someone else and fall in love again. But as I grew older, I've read and heard so many stories similar to this. That sometimes you can't completely erase someone, even when you are married and have some kids. Human's heart is mysterious.

JT 1987 True. My mom and dad have been married for 25 years but she still tells me about her first love. They were engaged but she ended up moving to America and lost connection with him. Maybe there's where 'Persuasion' comes in (since it's written later in her life) . Like Anne, Austen probably long for the lost opportunity to marry him. Perhaps it's a wishful thinking poured out on her books (in Anne's case, a second chance came + the Wentworth returned richer). Probably what she hoped to happen in her own love life. no, I don't really know. I probably make no sense

Beautiful story, but the one line that struck me the most was when Jane's father was talking to her about her supposed engagement with the rich nephew, and he said, "Nothing crushes the spirit more than poverty." I think it's that pivotal scene which led her to make that inevitable decision in the end when she turned her back from Tom. :(

now i understand what they mean by beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. He is so beautiful in this movie, even if he is not the typical hottie......everything about him in this movie is the perfect man.

This is a wonderfully made movie. I would hope the same cast can continue to make adapted movies of other Jane Austen novels. I am a bit in doubt of the historic truth of the plot itself though. From " Pride and Prejudice" we got to know what Austen's perception ( and society's of course) to Lydia's eloping. How could she have ever thought of doing it herself? Jane was quite modernized in this story. I wouldn't deny that she had experience deep and inspiring love. But 18th century love was, and should be different from one of the 20th century.

I loved this movie. It is more romantic than what happened in Jane’s real life: Tom was someone she spoke to a few times at those balls. They were very aware of each other, but there was no great romance. McAvoy made me very aware of *him* in this movie, though...he did such a great job I think he *is* this film.

I can relate. It seems apt that fans of James McAvoy are known as 'McAvoyeurs'! ~~~~~~~~~ Per Urban Dictionary: McAvoyeur An avid fan of actor James McAvoy. May also be spelled McAvoyer. After my friend and I watched Atonement and Becoming Jane, we became complete McAvoyeurs.
