Nivellen was such a likeable character because of the way Kristofer Hivju played him. Right up until he reveled his dark secrets.

Even rewatching, you still love the character. You love the way he goes all-out for guests because of how much time he spends alone, he's so fun & goofy you can't help but like him. That dark truth is still there, but knowing it's there ahead of time doesn't make it any less heartbreaking. It's an ending that always hurts. You can tell he's hurting the whole episode. He never hides that. And there is no way out. The true hurt isn't the curse, it's knowing what he did. He can never change that.

Completely agree. You feel bad for him and really like him until the end and then you kind of just feel like Geralt about him, like he's pathetic, and you can't even stand to look at him anymore.

@@MajorCanada that's the thing about "unforgivable", there is no hope for redemption. There are only two paths that remain; abandon hope and accept you're a monster, or fight for redemption you can never achieve because it's the right thing to do.

@@VivaLaDnDLogs It annoys me that the tv show didn't include the fact that the priestess that was r-pd was actually a priestess of the Cult of Coram Agh and was only pretending to be a priestess of the temple that was ransacked. So she belongs to a cult that sacrifices people so that the members are blessed with the ability to place curses on others, which is why her curse is so strong. So while what Nivellen did was definitely horrible, and I'm sure he has done other horrible things while being part of a group of highway men it makes me hate him a lot less knowing the victim is probably someone that killed multiple innocent people just so she can gain power.

Perfect blend of practical and cgi effects, his character and his episode were some of the best things in this second season. The classic horror elements in Sereena's character were also perfect; the bloody bruxa face, the neck and arms twisting, the living decapitated head.... chef's kiss👌

The CG has been a BIG improvement this season over season 1. All the creatures looked very good throughout the season.

I thought so at first too, but then i realised it just looked way too good, i have no idea how you can achieve that level of facial expression and emotion with that much prostethic. Would literally have been the best prostethic of all time, and it wouldnt even have been close. You can also see some CG-ish movement that looks like animation, but very subtle. Overall, a great effect. The character looked great

@@Ebosan87 It was the same with Game of Thrones Season 1. Budget went up when they realized it becomes successful. People remember GoT as an AAA-Production and it was, but there was still a big difference between the first seasons and the following, if you rewatch.

Yup, it was the best episode of that season. Really was hoping that the rest of this season would be as good as first episode but it wasn't. Still enjoyed the show and can't wait for the 3rd season.

@@VivaLaDnDLogs When I first saw Vereena (where I could see most of her body anyway), I was captivated as I found her to be quite beautiful and somewhat adorable (until I remembered she was a bruxa). But, at the same time, I was absolutely disgusted and, as you said, greatly unnerved by her creepy, inhuman movements, especially when she fought Gerald. I don't how Ciri didn't run out of the room when she first saw Vereena move that way but then most likely, the latter would have hunted her as she "can't help herself", which I guess makes sense since Vereena is a predator after all and running would have just triggered her predatory instincts.

@@AQ_456 I think Vereena gave off conflicting signals. Red flags and green flags. Her relationship with Nivellen is pretty unorthodox. She is a monster who needs to feed and kill, but she does seem to care for Nivellen and try to be kind.... Nah, you're right. Getting visited in bed by strange girls moving like that should set off the alarm bells.

I was utterly enthralled by Nivellen; it seemed so clearly not a CGI character, but the amount of realism and expression didn't seem possible with animatronics, especially not with so much wonderful dialogue. This is brilliant! Clearly a massive challenge for everyone involved, but it came out so well! Nivellen is a character you love to have around, love to watch, love to listen to; which is what makes the unforgivable act he committed hurt so much more. It's a beautiful tragedy.

Really enjoyed this episode and love that they made him immortal and made the nature of their relationship more about feeding than protection. Altho the immortality thing does diminish Vereena's moments thing tho. In the book she tries to kill him because "if I can't have you no one can" but since he's immortal in the show, there's no risk for Nivellen there. Still love it tho

I was wondering how he could look so expressive with a prothethic face makeup. But now I'm even more impressed that it was CG. Probably the best vfx practical look I've seen in my life. Way better than Disney's beauty and the beasts beast.

I think this show needed a consistent team of writers to get its footing right, but people keep arbitrarily praising this show so I expect no improvement.

I honestly struggled with how they did that. At first I thought it was prosthetics, if only because they NAILED the eyes, there was no uncanny valley there at ALL. They MUST have composited his actual eyes in, there just TOO perfect. Well done, guys, this deserves an Oscar for sure!

i work in the vfx industry and i'm super glad they had him in a suit and wasn't just all mocap'd (there are exceptions, for when having a real person is dangerous or impossible for a particular shot). sometimes going old skool will always be the best solution. i've worked on alot of big hollywood blockbusters where they could've saved so much time and effort and money, had they just put a guy in a costume. because sometimes when they go the cgi route, it just looks awful and its true for some of the films i've worked on.

The first episode was the best of the season, and it is so because of the writing but also because of Hivju’s great performance. As someone who is studying to be an actress I was captivated by his acting. The actress who played Vereena was also amazing. So sad the rest of the episodes weren’t as good, if the quality was kept the same as the first episode it would have been outstanding.

Probably my favorite episode of both seasons, everything was just perfect. Even Ciri being present in contrast to the books worked really nicely, both in helping with humanizing Vereena and also bringing higher stakes/danger to the fight.

To see someone I first watched playing the wild Tormund Giantsbane pull out such a masterful, Shakespearean performance - especially after he returned to human form - was an utter delight. Hope to see more like him in the future; very excited for Graham McTavish's Sigismund Dijkstra 😍

Undeniably great work. The facial expressions, especially around the eyes, are really really good. The problem remains the lips. If the creature designers are going to have protruding teeth and talking, they need to either speak with a lisp or figure out how the lips form plosives. In particular at 2:28, you can see that the creature's upper lip isn't following Kristofer's upper lip, because they didn't figure out how to have the lip slide laterally across those fangs.

the author of the books takes a lot of famous fairy tales and remakes them into his own dark version. The Witcher games do it too

That's the point of Sapkowski's short stories - he takes familiar stories and tropes and makes them into something unique. I recommend reading books if you haven't. :)

As some people have said, this is intentional and I'll add to the recommendations to read the books, but also the folk tales some of the stories are based off of. Beauty and the Beast is obvious here for this one (even more so in the book; it also has a pretty fun spin on how Nivellen adapts to the curse), but a previous story involving Duny is very close to "Hans My Hedgehog" and that's just the ones I can recall off the top of my head. I really do love it when people put their own spin on well-known stories to the point they become their own distinct thing, it's the kind of adaptation I like to see.

Great portrayal of the awesome character. Pity they changed few things, probably to make Niv more "evil". In the story he almost immediately confesses to Geralt what he did in the temple (not to mention that the priestesses followed the dark cult that adores curses and sacrifices... no, this is not an excuse for what Nev did, just a reminder that priestesses was not servant of Melitele or Freyja) and Vereena is manipulating Nev through songs and dreams, while he is not aware that she is killing innocents. In the show... clearly, showrunners has far less sympathy for Nev and more sympathy for Ver.

Probably my favourite episode and such a brilliant creature effect, im a 3d artist and i kept questioning if it was some amazing practical animatronic or if it was CG, the artists really captured Kristofer in this character especially the eyes.

He did such a great job with the character. Even after hearing all the really bad stuff he did to get himself cursed, he made Nivellen a character you liked to watch.

Nivellen was such a likeable character man! I found the reason of his curse to be quite unfitting. I wish the writers had gone in a different direction with his story. I can’t help but think his character had so much development potential.

IMO this episode was the most well paced and capturing one in the whole series :D I love Jaskier too much to count this as my favorite episode but narratively this is definitely it C:
