I'm excited to share a new peek at my creative process! This episode shows me persevering despite multiple squirrel attacks, as I make characters out of acorns and photograph them feeding chipmunks.
I wrote and recorded all the music in this video :)
Prints, stationery, and lots more Becorn photos are available at www.davidmbird.com.
SUBSCRIBE! I have more videos in the works!
UPDATE:
Hi folks. I appreciate the concern some of you have for the well-being of the squirrels in this video. Some people have rightly pointed out that Joonie was held together by hot glue and metal wire, and the squirrel may have unwittingly eaten some (non toxic) glue or bitten into metal. I’m sorry about that. It was never my intention for the squirrel to eat Joonie, and I don’t want it to happen again. As I mentioned in the video, it’s extremely rare for squirrels to be interested in Becorns and this incident caught me off guard. I’ll do a better job fending off squirrels in the future.
(I’m getting in the weeds here, but I’ll just add: in the past when I intentionally offered up the Becorns to the squirrels, I minimized the danger by gluing only on the exterior of the acorn caps, and leaving out the metal.)

I actually have read several handwritten and illustrated stories by my dad with characters that look like these. The stories lines weren't half bad, but I told my dad he needed to modernize the telling. He wrote as he heard stories in his youth told on old-tyme radio. I suggested he get some children's books with audio from the library to listen to as a guide to finding his voice in today's children's storybook market. Unfortunately, he did not pursue it further, as far as I know, before he passed from this plane to the next. I still have just one of the stories, but my stepmother did not know what he did with the others I returned to him.

You know what? Joonie's character growth in this is beautiful. Starting out as a nurturing, gentle giver. Then being attacked. Perhaps with the trauma of that incident coupled with other Becorns convincing her to be more menacing, She girds herself with weapons and a scowl to any threat. But after a while, she realises this is not who she is, she sees the birds, chipmunks and also the squirrels less. She's a giver. Not a menacing warrior. She loves, she doesn't want to hate, it's too big of a weight. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I LOVE these videos of yours! The storytelling is heart warming, I really hope to see more!

My granddaughter asked me how I got the squirrels around my home to eat from my hand. I said it was easy, I just had to sit totally still for 3+ hours with food in my hand several days in a row. She looked at me like I was crazy 🤣 I think kids are really missing out not learning to be still. These videos are amazing! Thanks for being willing to sit still and share the beautiful pics you got with us

As a young adult who was a 2000s kid, I think that parents aren’t aware of the effects of daily screen time and lack of free-play that is also screen free, kids this days are dealing with challenge when it comes to finding entertainment in simple things, with less opportunities of learning to self entertain without a ready made program, engaging in situations has to be “interesting” enough to hold their focus without getting too restless. I think you should try inviting your grandchild to nature-watch with you, prepare snacks, wee-folk and animal tales, and create together creative stories about what you see. Imagination can be her key to enjoying simple stillness - finding entertainment and fulfillment of it.

Wow, I can't think of another time anyone's plucked something directly from my childhood imagination and made it real. I used to picture little woodsy critters like this interacting with plants and animals, when I was very young, and dream of building something like them someday. I always thought acorns looked like helmets! I had a lot of arts-and-crafts dreams, when I was young. Nowadays, I'm more blind than not, and my hands so close to paralyzed they can't make anything outside of my keyboard, but it's lovely to know somebody else met these little guys in the woods, and made them real.

Almost all the pics of the final Junie with a chipmunk are wonderful, especially the ones where you can clearly see her smile. When I was a kid, I hand-fed peanuts to a squirrel in Central Park, NYC. At first he'd cautiously approach my hand (I was lying on the ground), grab the peanut and run away to eat it. But pretty quickly he just sat by my hand as he took one peanut after another out of my hand and ate them right there. It was a special experience.

I feel like Becorns, if ever lost or eaten or what have you, would just grow back on trees after a week or so. We see Joonie having an unfortunate first encounter with a squirrel, coming back prepared for the second take, and eventually going back to doing what she does best, but with maybe a hint more of caution! (Can't feed the birds when she's off regrowing, after all!)

Lol, that made me think he should do a scene with a table and restaurant. Maybe a bowl of food on the table would prevent the Becorns being taken so quickly? Little red and white checkered tablecloth, or plain white, fancy fancy! Maybe wooden crates of seeds nuts and food? Could make with wooden coffee stir sticks or twigs. Sign for the name of the restaurant, menu board...

I just really love the little backstories behind your characters! And I would certainly buy a Junie figurine! Just something fun, see @moviesquirrels videos. A lot of people like to watch, listen, to the nature sounds and just watch animals doing animal things. With music, without music, or even if you want to tell a cute little story in the background. ASMR that's very popular right now, and also bedtime stories for people to fall asleep to. (See podcast - "Nothing Much Happens". You can play around with some of those ideas with your Becorns, and any of that extra or excess footage of video that you have. This was a very cute story about the squirrel. And I love how you always set out to get one thing but end up with another! Such as life! Especially nature!

Joonie was an experience Birdherder, or Birder, as many of the becorns called them. her job was to go out and make sure the new and young birds have plenty of seeds to get them ready for the winter season. Becorns were guardians of the forest, they were tasked with watching over and helping the less fortunate creatures of nature. Joonie had helped many birds, young and old. She had been around many seasons. But she had never encountered a squirrel. Becorns avoided squirrels, while creatures of nature like birds, squirrels were known to steal from becorns and birds. They had even been known to attack and eat becorns. Most becorns were quick and wise enough to avoid them. But she still had heard stories, and Elder Bitberry had lost his leg to a squirrel. Joonie had a new assignment, a group of birds had moved in just a few trees down, and she was tasked with making sure they were getting enough seeds before the colder weather set in. So she set out, her cupule filled with yummy seeds. She waited at the new spot. But no birds came. However a large, furry creature 10 times her size, bigger than any bird she had feed. It came right up to her, its hot breath washed over her. She was frozen with fear, was this one of the dreaded squirrels she had heard of. It poked at her. Was she going to get eaten, should she have been more careful. But the squirrel left, leaving her unharmed. Joonie didn't know what to think of her squirrel encounter. The squirrel didn't hurt her, in fact it had taken some of her seeds. Maybe the squirrel just needed some seeds too. Maybe squirrels were just like birds, maybe not all squirrels were bad. Joonie went back to the spot, even though no birds were there, she brought more seeds hoping to see her squirrel friend again. She did not tell Elder Bitberry about it, he would reassign her if he found out. While she met a few other creatures at her spot, the squirrel didn't comeback. She was about to give up, but them one morning he came back. He seemed bigger than last time, but more majestic this time. Like a giant golden god. The squirrel came right up to her, despite the awe she was in, it was still scary and she was frozen with fear again. The squirrel ate all the seeds, this brought joy to Joonie, "maybe squirrels are just hungry like birds, maybe if you have seeds they will leave you alone." She thought. But then something Joonie didn't expect happen. The squirrel grabbed her with his massive claws, it pushed into her acorn body, it didn't hurt, but it wasn't pleasant. Joonie didn't know what was going on, maybe the squirrel wanted to thank her, or show her something. The squirrel did not. Squirrels liked seeds, but most of all squirrels like acorns. This was Joonie's last mission, she feed many birds, and small animals throughout her time, which many becorns did. But her final mission, she feed a squirrel. We will miss you Joonie, may all becorns have kernals as soft and warm as you did.

What a vid David! What a vid! Amusing and magnificent and lovely, that it made me remind of my childhood! Thanks so much! I recalled the sweetest memories of my times as a child, when I had my pet chipmunk. How do I express my gratitude?! I have had lost my motivation but now it is back because of you! Your photography and art is wonderful, literally full of wonder. It is after a long time that I have felt happy and have taken my time to comment on a video. Thanks so much! You're blessed by the lord, he'll always bring glee to you since your work puts a true smile on others' face.💚

I battle with squirrels in my own garden. They take the ginger, galangal and turmeric roots and rebury them elsewhere. They steal the garden signs for almost everything I've planted. I like to imagine that there is an adolescent squirrel in a tree hollow somewhere and he's bragging to his friends about how he scored these magical artifacts and barely got away with his life while taking them. He tells them how these magically imbued squares while pushed into the soil, will make different type of food appear. Keep telling your stories, these are beautiful!

I love this, and yes I would also enjoy a follow up book or movie. But it would have to be stop-motion (I think that is what they are called , like the old Gumby cartoons.) because your art work is priceless. Now I wish to creat one, but my hands aren’t as nimble as in the past. Good luck, and am looking forward to the next adventure, BOOKS! And on a different note, you should have sanded off the little nob on her underside.

I like shot with the chipmunk and the Becorn, it tells such a story in just 1 frame. 😁 I like the one where he's over her shoulder and the one where he's facing her. So sweet!

I've been in a blood feud with Squirrel Nation since 2002. My heart goes out to the families of your fallen. You, sir, did those heros an inconceivable disservice by making them look so tasty.
