You will find a lot of free stuff on my site at biobees.com including plans for top bar hives and our international natural beekeeping forum.

Fascinating. I still think an idea like this is going to come along and take on the mites. It’s going to be a simple solution like this and NOT something wildly complicated and damaging like a man made chemical/insecticide.

We could have a single device with settings for Varroa destructor, small hive beetle, and bee repellant just as easily as we can have one device which can produce the correct frequencies for tuning a musical instrument if it works. These days, it could even be an app on your cellphone. Such a rich field of research that was barely touched on by the device you mentioned and never followed up. That is a great area of research to pick up on and carry forward.

I think sound and vibration are pretty low among insect senses… Yes, crickets chirp, bees buzz, and cicadas sound like you are standing under a bad high voltage line. The commonality is that these are all pretty loud and pronounced (and uncommon among insects)… The mosquito seems to be a bit of an exception… The Apidictor is/was very cool (and somewhat useful), but I don’t think sound, or even a tuned high frequency is going to do anything to a Varroa Mite… Scents seem to have some effect… I’m thinking phages might be the answer… Correct me if I am wrong, but I read that Varroa transmits bee killing viruses to the bees and it’s the viruses that kill them (or perhaps the combination of the mite and the sickness is too much)…. Phages are tiny viruses that target bigger viruses and bacteria… Innuculate the mites and bees with the right phages and the bees won’t catch the viruses that come from the mites… I think phages are the future of both human and animal/insect medicine… phages can take out antibiotic resistant superbugs when nothing else can… But much like your thoughts/ideas, this is all just speculation on my part as well…

I can't think how you could find a sound frequency that would resonate any part of a varroa without also disturbing the bees. Adding electronic vibration "bee mood monitoring" to the hive sounds fun though.

You could collect the varroa using co2. It will anesthetized the bees and varroa. Dry ice, fire extinguisher...

You want to make a device that will give Varroa the equivalent of the Havana syndrome. Maybe not so crazy as you say, if it can be done for humans why not for mites.

Hi. Where's the "Phil Chandler Here" greeting we usually get on your Video? !? 🤗 Interesting topic... Ultrasound. Did you know... Colour also gives of a kind of Ultrasound. Eg Red is much stronger than White. "They said Red Petticoats worn in Victorian times kept you Warm(er !) They being red wasn't just a fashion thing. 🤔 I use to hate certain 'loud to me' frequencies as a kid, that I've lost getting old, where hearing higher frequency bands can't be detected now ! Love the Buzz of a Bee. 🥰 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Hmmmmm it seems that my comment on the Apivox monitor has disappeared. Anyway you can look it up if you're interested. It's the next generation up from the Apidictor.

Since eggs are comparable in size to varroa mites, it might be that the resonant frequency of eggs is similar to that of mites...

Waiting for someone to "discover" drones control mites. I dont know this, its just suspect that commercial hives discourage drones and commercial hives have mite issues.
@TheBaconWizard
@TheBaconWizard 2 жыл бұрын
It has been known for a very long time that Drones encourage mites: their brood cells are much bigger and pupate for longer. So a drone cell will attract an average of 3 mites, vs 1 for ordinary worker brood. Hence, a way of controlling varroa is to provide drone foundation, and then remove it (and all the mites within it) before they hatch, thus keeping mite levels at a reasonable level.

I know you don’t have hive beetles in the UK. I have my first top bar hive and although I live in a reasonably cool part of Australia, hive beetles got into my hive very quickly and I have no idea how to get them out. I didn’t know about eco floors until I had the bees in my hive and it’s a solid floor. Can you think of any way I can get rid of them? I really enjoy your videos and your love of bees.

What would be the effect of that on bee larvae or eggs, which has pretty much the same size with varroa?

I don't know. It is softer material, which will have some effect, but until the research is done, it's all speculative.

@@BarefootBeekeeper Maybe you can put the ultrasonic transmitter only in your telescopic entrance to knock off the mites before they get in.

There is a commercial product available that uses ultra sound for varroa control. Called 'Varroa Killer Sound'. It has been tested by Dr. Liebig from the Ruhr University. Long story short: It didn't work.

Microwaving ? nah, its gonna target to big a freq spectrum i think.. just like audio spectrum at 3 to 5mm wave lenght. we have to find varroa's enemy and subject them to that ? given : if it only targets varroa.induced virus to kill varroa,, im just a 5 year beekeeper so don't know much :) but thinking here, what if we target the legs lenght in rf energy to burn em off :) so no walking in my hive beetle.. what do hive beetle eat ? maybe target that>?
