You have hived a swarm in your top bar hive, and a few days later, your patience expires and you decide to take a look inside... only to find your bees clustered together, apparently doing NOTHING. But all is not as it seems...
You will find a lot of free stuff on my site at biobees.com including plans for top bar hives and our international natural beekeeping forum.

Hi Phil, I handled my first swarm a few days ago in the garden, and I just wanted to say thank you. I remember you saying it should be on on the the bucket list to experience and how to bees are harmless when they take to the air. This gave me the confidence to calm some of the neighbours who had no idea I had bees and what was going on. I guess they were always going to find out. Anyway I kept an eye on them and they landed about 20ft away on a little Fuscia shrub. It was all over in 15 minutes and I managed to get out my poly nuc. A painted queen was the first to land directly on top of the nuc and I got her in only to watch her crawl out the entrance and fly away again "Noooooo!" She landed again on the shrub and I shook her in. They're now building as you've said. The funny thing is, we did an artificial swarm the day before but they left their "new hive" from the original spot. I was asked to check if we'd missed a QC but I couldn't find any capped QC. So I have no idea why they left that hive. I'm tempted to reunite what seems to be only a couple of seems of bees with the swarm in the original original spot they swarmed from, which is now next to the poly nuc by about a foot away. The two seems are making a couple of new queen's which I'll remove. Any suggestions? Many thanks, Nuruz.

It sounds like the old queen went ahead with the swarming regardless of your split. I have had that happen myself, and luckily, like you, caught the swarm again.

Bees doing nothing ... lol. Good one. Put 5 frames of bees into observation hive and watch. They never sleep and move stuff around to make empty cells. Then they herd the queen to them.

Hi Phil, Can bees 'build' onto a silicon mat material ? ... As it's kinda nonstick and insulating in properties, could you buy a cheapish oven sheet, or base off a tray bake silicon mould... And staple this to the inside of your Follower Boards. To prevent Burr Comb adhesions !?! ... Just a thought 😏 Thank you for your kind reply re Quadratic Hive / My Horizontal Hive use need ! 💪 🐝 Beek in Scotland...

I am watching your video from Nepal. As far as I think, these bees must be resting

Can’t you just move the holes and plug the old ones if you want them to enter from a different spot? Or was that bee box just breaking down?

I wondered why my new swarm seemed quiet. I'm in two minds though about feeding them, maybe it would go against their need to be naturally resilient on nectar?

You can use anything you have to hand, such as straw (in a bag), wool, polyester fibre, vermiculite, etc.

@ 4:47 right side of picture what are the black bugs on the side? Bees are always busy doing something. What are the advantages of the angled hive as opposed to the square? Good video and camera work thanks.

Woodlice they aren't a problem for a hive, during the evening I have slugs that make there way into the hive and ground beetles mop up any bees that didn't make it back not to mention the fattest spider that lives in the roof. It is quite amazing that there is whole ecosystem that exists both within and around your hive. I notice the woodlice are more prominent during the winter and retreat a little bit as the hive becomes more manic, slugs on the other hand are more active right now and they have nothing to fear from the bees or the bees from them.

Sometimes I think there are as many woodlice living in and around my hives as bees! They too seem to be social insects. I like to take time to watch them and how they just seem to get on with the bees.

I almost always see woodlice and earwigs in my hives. The bees don't seem to be bothered by them, so I leave them be. I'm pretty sure that earwigs eat Varroa mites.

Hello Phil, can you write how wide are streets between 2 natural combs at you, in the brood part (is it 10mm or less?) . At the moment Im parcticing Housel centering system in my LR colonies. Thanks for videos. Best regards, Sinisa.

They leave a variable gap, which I have not measured, but I would guess 6-8mm.

@@BarefootBeekeeper thank you very much for answer :) As I have information its very important for bees in natural protection against varroa mite also. All we are trapped by foundations 5,35 and 36 - 37mm wide LR frames in brood nest. Thats why all the chemicals came out on the market against varroa.... not to mention that bees cant build natural cones in this conditions... Cheers from Croatia :)

Dude, if you have an external microphone, get a windguard, can't be more than USD $1. If it a built-in mic, put a small piece of sponge over the mic hole.

I'm waiting for an external mic to arrive for my 4K camera. Meanwhile, I am using a Canon IXUS 115 HS which has a forward-facing mic hole just above the lens. I will test your idea though, thanks.

@@BarefootBeekeeper My pleasure. That kills the wind noise, (not really wind noise, but rather air gusts collapsing the mic diaphragm!) but lets other sound through. Even the lightest sponge works well!
