This song is not disco. It is more 70s R&B. It is a soulful ballad. Disco qualities are embedded but it is missing the particular beat that defines disco. Having said that, bring on all the disco you want. I love it.

I don’t understand I’m not being mean here don’t attack me, but I guess we need to look up the definition of the word disco. I always felt like it was a good beat and a good song to dance to not a slow love song like this one.❤
@DropAnchor1978
@DropAnchor1978 Жыл бұрын
@@kathystammen8774 You are not wrong. The classic four-on-the-floor disco beat (kick drum falls on each downbeat), with the hi-hat cymbal opening on the "and" of each beat, or the "upbeat," with a tempo on or near 120 beats-per-minute, constitutes what we know as the disco beat. With the era of disco taking hold around 1974 -1980, other elements were introduced and made standard. As used by Chic, lush strings, the chunking rhythm guitar, and elements of Latin and Jazz influences all added to the pot. So, a ballad that uses any mix of those elements, even without the classic beat, can give a feel of being disco. A song can fall under that umbrella simply due to its arrangement and production style. I know there was a backlash to the disco movement, but I think now many people who were its detractors in 1979 embrace the genre and recognize how great the music could be.

The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. All 4 brothers are just natural musical talents. All of them dropped out of high school in their early teens and none of them could read or write music. All their compositions were created completely organically. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1966. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin' (and was also actually the first album on which their logo was introduced). From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdSZi7aZnNy7gn0.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ja6PnZxhy6mtm2g.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rMx4iLZmssyUYIU.html. From their Still Waters album, Smoke and MIrrors: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7ppqbV5uL2ykp8.html. From the 1960's I've gotta get a message to you kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eadkdqyfqdS4m2w.html. You are right, this was a two step dance (Schleicher (sneak) in german) song in disco, where the light was dimmed and couples danced close- there had no place between a sheet of paper, flirted, kissed.... Fun fact about Barrys smooth, soft voice and sleeping: Barry and M. Jackson were very close friends and by the time M couldn't fall asleep (he was having trouble sleeping) he called Barry to sing "How can you mend a broken heart" to him over the phone!!!

Coincidentally I saw a mini documentary about this album yesterday. And as Barry himself said here, this is not disco. They never saw themselves as a disco group, but were judged by the disco haters, which caused record sales to fall. But ironically they had countless hits after this with songs that they let others sing. Barry had another #1 hit album in the UK in 2021 with "Greenfields - The Gibb Brothers Songbook Vol. 1". Worth listening to.

I think I almost choked to death. The Bee Gees took off in the 60's. There were serious hits throughout the 60's which a lot of young people completely miss. This also continued into the 70's. Then in 1977, remarkably they were asked to write a soundtrack to a proposed movie called, Saturday Night Fever. And well, as they say the rest is history! I personally prefer their early 60's music. But hey, we are talking about he Bee Gees, I will take it all!😁

They had so many hits before the disco era. They hated to be known as a disco band. They could change genre with every decade. They have number one hits in 4 decades. The rabbit hole is so deep. They have also written for so many artist and so many artist have covered their hits. Not one of the brothers can read or write music. That's what makes them even more amazing.

I watched a documentary on The Bee Gees a few years ago. In it, the brothers talked about how the group's career was starting to lag in the early to mid 1970s. There was fear the band may permanently break up or get dropped by their record label. Apparently, the brothers started paying much closer attention to the types of music that was getting played on the radio at that time. They felt that they could perform in an R&B style and gave it an effort. Given the sheer number of hit songs that The Bee Gees wrote for themselves and others, I was fascinated to learn in the documentary that the group would jot down a few song ideas and then write the lyrics, together, right there in the studio as the song was being recorded. Talk about turning in your homework at the last minute! 😀Interestingly enough, Eric Clapton took credit in the documentary for pushing the band in a more R&B direction, but while that claim was included in the program, the brothers did not confirm it in the documentary. However, in many ways, the shift in musical styles may have saved their careers.

Disco was a great era! Those of us who lived through that time had a great time dancing to it.

Bee gees are British Born in the Isle of Man and moved to Australia. They are brothers and Robin and Maurice are twins Barry in the middle is the lead singer and the older brother. I listened to them when I was a child. This particular song was released in Disco era but has got Earth Wind and Fire influence and Beach boys harmony. So nice that young people like you can appreciate this type of music. I am 65 and my son is teaching me new music and I think music is timeless, when you listen to it it gets to your heart. I can listen to bee gees leave it for a while and come back to it and feel the same. They have that magic time after time. Thanks guys I enjoyed your reaction very much.

Love the Bee Gee's, I was in Germany in the 70's and they were the most popular group going. They made DISCO as far as I am concerned. I think disco brought in the strings, like yoou were saying. Check out some other Disco Groups from the 70's. Fantastic.

Those boys could sure write songs. 'You Should be Dancing' is a great one from the album. Lots going on in it and Barry hits you with both the falsetto and his stronger lower voice. It's a great performance.

The Bee Gees were, I think, British kids, all brothers, brought up at Cribb Island, a suburb of Brisbane, Australia, and did local stuff before being heard and moving to America, back when I was a teenager.

You can play just about any track off the Saturday Night Fever sound track,and it's going to be good,whether the boomers admit it or not,Bee Gee's were a great group in the 70's,be it disco or other genres.I prefer southern rock myself,but there are so many 70's groups it was just a great time to grow up and experience it all!

They had some great songs in the disco era which I love, but I do prefer their earlier hits. My favorite song of theirs though is actually the title track from their album "Spirits Having Flown". Love that song!

This song is a Slow Dance Song, No Disco didn't draw in the strings.. The Big Band Era brought in the Strings in Orchestras... Slow dance was very different than dancing they do today...today is just standing there be bopping or something, not real dancing. Back in my day it was Class to see a couple that could actually dance beautifully together..

Some of the Bee Gees songs were Disco...Most all are Loved today because they are timeless. There was Disco music back in the day that was pretty cheesy and played in small nightclubs, but The Bee Gees Wasn't one of them....A lot of Disco back in my day was just Dance music..not a whole lot of singing. The Bee Gees songs will live on in the memories of the past and in the future Memories yet to be made. A certain Genre of people liked MJ, a certain Genre of people liked the Beatles, A certain Genre of People like Country but I can't think of any race, any gender, any age, any Genre of music fans that do not like The Bee Gees. I'm hitting 80 and went to Woodstock. My favorite music is The Eagles, CCR, Hendrix, Garth Brooks, Sam Cooke, Boz Scaggs and The Bee Gees....

Let me tell you. I was in my early 20s during disco's peak and it was so much fun. I used to get dressed up and go to clubs that played 45 minute songs. Motown had strings in most of its songs starting in the 1960s.

This is an easy listening love song that was composed and performed by a group that had 3 huge disco songs, Staying Alive, Night Fever, and More Than A Woman,. All 4 on the biggest selling disco album of all time. The song Tragedy came out a few years later and had a more synth-rock sound to it, although it was likely a hit on the dance floors and at roller-skating rinks.

The Gibb brothers as you read earlier, started to sing together when they were six and Barry was nine. I have been a fan since I was a teenager and I’m 62 now. I have read every book about them. Listen to every interview I have almost every CD that they’ve ever come out with. For some reason even though they’ve been singing together over 50 years people still call them a disco group. And that is one thing that Barry Gibb used to get really upset about. Because Saturday night fever soundtrack was definitely when disco was popular. But they only sang disco songs maybe two or three years and they’re Scan of the time that they were together was 40 years plus. They had hits in the 60s in the 70s the 80s the 90s and even the early 2000s until Maurice passed away. If you really want to hear some of their best work, listen to some of their music from the 60s such as I can’t see nobody, to love somebody, world, Spicks and specks. You will be pleasantly surprised.❤

Thanks, I always look forward to your next reaction! There are SOOOOOO many more impressive BeeGees songs, in my humble opinion, than this one. I'd love to see you react to amazing songs from my favorite Bee Gees era - the 1960s! For starters, try: Massachusetts I Started a Joke New York Mining Disaster 1941 To Love Somebody Words To Love Somebody In 1975, there's a fantastic live performance on the TV program called The Midnight Special of a song I think all of you would enjoy,, called Nights on Broadway. Final recommendation- please watch the video from their 1997 song, Alone, if you haven't already. They'd been creating and performing together for 40 years!
