Eternal Life: Preserving the Memory of Beechville is a reflective look at how one African Nova-Scotian community is coping with urban sprawl encroaching on its borders. Following the war of 1812, a group of freed slaves settled in Beechville, Nova Scotia as refugees escaping the United States. Almost two centuries later, as urbanization threatens many of Canada's rural communities, Beechville itself is being swallowed up. At the core of the community, stands the Beechville United Baptist Church. Established in 1844, the Church is the final relic giving testimony to the area's history.

I grew up near Beechville. I remember seeing a very old man walking to the nearest lake with buckets to get water to bring back to his house when I was a young teen many years ago. I always felt bad for him because I knew he didn't have running water. But he had strength, courage and God's guidance that whole walk back and forth. I never see him anymore and I do believe his house is no longer there. It was a tiny house on top of a huge hill. I miss seeing him. He's earned his rest if he's gone.

This is real. Similar stuff happening in Preston. Theres a lot of Black history in Scotia that people don't even know about. I got a video up bout Africville. I wish the average brother or sister knew all of our amazing history.

The preacher looks like Heavy D…but seriously, this reminds me of the plight of black farmers in the US. Land that was brought, owned and farmed for generations by black people was slowly nibbled at by discriminatory practices during the Jim Crow era through to today until now less 1% of the original black farmers are left.

Pretty crazy to me! My 9th great grandparents were exiled from Nova Scotia in 1755 by the British they were both mixed Acadian/ Mk'mok they ended up in Louisiana after 30 years of bouncing around the Atlantic & Caribbean.

Wow this is horrible! I had no idea this kind of thing is going on in Nova Scotia. I Just happened to come across these documentaries as I was searching for places to visit when we visit N.S from Ontario. My Husband and I, and My brother & his wife are both in biracial marriages - never would I have thought we should be worried to visit the east coast. I was looking forward to attending a church service with some upbeat gospel. From the sounds of these documentaries people may not be so welcoming- as we assumed

If you're noticing the peculiar accents it's because Black Nova Scotians are descendants of Blacks enslaved in America and the Caribbean. So yes the accents will be a mixture of the American South and the Caribbean.

I grew up with some kids who came from Nova Scotia, the List family. When they told me where they came from I did not believe them. LOL. We were little kids and I did not think there were any black people in Canada. LOL. Beautiful people and they loved the Lord!

Very interesting. I had no idea or at least had not given Black Canadian settlements much thought. They are in fact an extension of African history. I only came across the name Black Nova Scotia because I happened upon highlights of a black hockey player from the area on youtube doing his thing. It's obvious that history has little value when it deals with blacks. This is the same all over the world. I'll have to study this more. Great job on this documentary.

I keep hearing these comments in the video about how the white man bought their homes but somehow the sellers have "lost" their homes. Just not true...they gained a fistful of cash and agreed to the sale. I sold two houses in the past and did not "lose" anything at all. So it's the same old rhetoric about how down trodden the folks from this community feel. But what grieves me most is that the minister of the church for all these good people is promoting this victim mentality. He is a person who is held in very high regard and trust and really should do more to promote the advancement of everyone there and not wallow in the notion of loss. This loss mentality is for losers. If you lose, you are at a loss. And is you lose and continue to feel sorry for yourself...then you have become a loser. And this is your choice. Change is difficult, even for the toughest of people, especially when the old neighborhood is fading into a memory. Memories are a part of the past. But tomorrow holds the hope of enrichment and all that is good. Embrace it and keep it close. I grew up in Uniacke Square and got tired of this language about loss and "woe is me" from both black and white. It's simply an excuse for not moving onward and urd. It's an excuse to just do nothing with one's life and blame others for your own problems. Just get your game in gear. Move upward and onward. I did just that and moved to Ontario and in so doing I "lost" nothing at all. I miss Halifax. I miss The Square and it's good people. But progress, as spoken of in the video, is not only for redevelopment of Beechville but also that of the people themselves if they choose to do so. I am white. My wife is black, from Haiti, and she and her family left the Caribbean to a new and better life in Canada. They never looked back. They sold their homes and most of all they "lost" nothing at all. So what's it gonna' be...victor or victim...the choice is yours. God bless you all and God bless Beechville.

If you are proud don't call yourself and Indian because that is what Columbus called the indigenous people because he thought he was in India!

They're not even indigenous though. The indigenous people all have distinct cultures languages and names for their nations who have been here for Thousands of years. Not black people, unless they're mixed with indigenous ppl of North Central and South America.
