that person Amy keeps seeing is Viola Swamp from the book Miss Nelson is Missing. the premise of the story is that Miss Nelson's class was misbehaving so much that she pretended to be sick and disguised herself as the horrible substitute Viola Swamp to teach the students a lesson. Viola Swamp in the story is mean and nasty to the children and scares the shit out of them so much that they beg for Miss Nelson to come back and promise to be good from then on. I think in the show, the reason Amy's trauma is represented by Viola Swamp is that she represents punishment for bad children and her whole life, she felt that she needed to be punished for just existing since she heard her parents arguing about how difficult it was to take care of her. the writing and symbolism in this show is just top tier. the last two episodes are just fucking wild and I can't wait to see your reactions to it! ❤

I love how this episode basically broke down Danny and Amy’s entire character from the moment they are born to how their environment shaped them into the people they are now. Danny had a hard time connecting with people outside of his family, so he held onto Paul as his only companion and does so by putting Paul in situations to not think or act for himself or depend solely on Danny. I dislike him the most, he's the definition of misery likes company. He couldn't accept that he is the one who made the house house burn down, he had to blame someone else. He can't let things go, his actions propell the feud deeper and deeper

One thing about Amy, if she’s going through something bad she makes sure to try and bring someone down with her too. When her and Fumi was talking about the affair, the first thing amy says is “well George had an emotional affair” and “Fumi you’re just as wrong for not telling him the truth” instead of Amy just accepting responsibility for what she does wrong. Amy isn’t good at apologizing she usually feels backed into a corner and when someone catches her in a lie she gets aggressive and tries to get attention off her in whatever way she can.

It is my opinion that both Danny and Amy are broken individuals. Childhood trauma is the underlying cause. But as far as story arcs are concerned, they appeared to be coming around, just a bit. They revealed their true colors and Danny's arc got much darker. My sympathy is gone for this dude.

Danny gets so much hate for this episode and I totally get the frustration but I’m just gonna say, hard disagree with people saying this episode makes him “unlikeable” to the audience and “destroys” any empathy people have with him. Amy and Danny BOTH have been pretty “unlikeable” from the series jump, both are doing awful things repeatedly and it’s made it pretty clear that both of them are pretty much the same and make bad choices. This series does an AMAZING job at showing how broken they both are. Obviously what Danny did was wrong but I’m not gonna say I don’t understand his feelings of loneliness either, which is what so much of this series is about to me, how these two characters don’t have a single place to feel seen/heard. And it’s not like Amy and Danny are the only shitty people here, I mean George, Paul, Fumi and Isaac all have pretty awful parts about them as well that make them ALL pretty bad people in one way or another and I love the realness of it all. I love Danny and Amy both, and I think good people can do bad things and not be an evil person. For me seeing their lives didn’t make me “dislike” then it honestly made me empathize more being able to see they psychology behind all their actions. Humans are complex and this series nails it perfectly

thanks for this comment. one of the main themes of this show is "hurt people hurt people" and even though I disagree with pretty much everything Danny and Amy do, I totally understand their motivations and how they got to where they are. they are both beautifully flawed characters and I love them both equally for different reasons.

The entire show and it's focus on these two characters is how their obsession brings out their worst qualities. This isn't a black and white show though, there are many moments you see these two have that capacity for good and things going right for them, which makes that much more hard to watch to see those desires ruin all the good will they have and destroy them. I feel like if you walked out of this show agreeing with one of them over the other, you missed the point by a long shot.

I’ll say from personal experience, talking about issues and emotional problems were never the norm in my family. Any attempt at bringing something up was handled pretty similarly to how it was in the show, except with more of a language barrier. It sucks too, cause all you want to do as a kid is understand everything around you, but you’re kind of left to your own devices.

@@アキコ2003 it’s definitely cheating but tbh there’s like levels to cheating. Beating off to another woman is bad but at least you aren’t- well inside her so-to-speak. Physically cheating with sex just seems worse, the first thing is a line crossed but at least you can try and talk about that but physically cheating is crossing a few lines. And regardless on if they were good people or not tbh they should have been got a divorce in my opinion it just seemed like it was dragging on trying to fix something that was too far gone, on top of that they got everything else out the way, right after she said she wanted to move past stuff and extra, he agreed and she seemed like she was gonna tell him what happened but instead she said she wanted to move. So after thinking the air was clean and a clean slate you realize that your wife not only didn’t tell you what happened but she also wasn’t over the road rage thing that she had so many options to talk to her about and MIND YOU he didn’t realize that UNTIL she told him so not only was he mad at her sleeping with someone else he had a revelation that his wife could have “prevented this” so to speak, called the cops or something but she took it into her own hands and as she said “actions have consequences” and while her actions didn’t directly cause her family to be in danger it did cause a chain effect. Now I’m not defending him or saying he was good but comparing what she did to him masturbating to another woman yeah she is definitely worse

I've read a research once that said that in general, statistically speaking, men deal with physical cheating worse than with emotional cheating, and for women it's opposite (they tend to forgive physical cheating with no feelings involved, not the other way round). So, actually, I am not that surprised he was sorta okay with her texting to Paul, but demanding a divorce as soon as he found out that she's slept with Paul
