One of the many tales passed down from beekeeper to beekeeper is that BANANAS SHOULD NEVER BE EATEN IN AN APIARY - allegedly because of the similarity between the bees' alarm pheromone and the smell of a ripe banana.
In this video, I put that theory to the test.

If you want to smell the alarm pheromone, pick up a worker by the wings and put it to your nose. (Not too close mind!) She will poke her stinger out and the smell is quite strong. :)

My bees have access to thousands of banana tree.. Of about 5 or 6 varieties within 3 kilometers. Never have seen a bees on a banana in any state.. I realize this is outside.. Just a personal observation.. Yes my bees are on a banana Plantation... In Bulacan, Philippines

If you blend together filtered water, mineral salts and bananas, bees go crazy over it. Its excellent food for them.

Perhaps the cattle mistook the banana aroma as bee alarm pheromone and decided to move to safety. Or maybe they are bananaphobic.

Interesting. Good info, and a good lesson; be careful, but don't just believe everything you hear.

Ya, bananas are FAR BETTER FOR BEES THAN SUGAR. It gives them everything they need. Minerals, patassium, fats, carbs and protein. And they can even use this to feed to their young. They can't feed their young sugar. Very important.

They seem a little cautious at first. Interesting. I've found the "sting" pheromone mimics the imitation banana or banana candy smell a little more than the real fruit. Just my nose though.

Great experiment, and probably well overdue. I'd love to see the waggle dance on that one! I wonder how many other over-ripe fruits could be fed, and what the resultant honey would taste like? Potassium is essential to the functioning of the nervous system of most, if not all animals. It is sometimes referred to as vitamin K. I've been told by my doc to eat two bananas a day, as my potassium levels are bordering on dangerously low.

K is the chemical symbol for the element potassium. Vitamin K is something else entirely.

Very interesting. I'm going to give a feed of ripe banana's to one of my hives and see the outcome.

Did you try feeding them bananas?? What were the results??
@reade79
@reade79 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimmy8573 I did. I did in two of my hives. One is still very productive going into, now winter as a strong hive. The second, not so. The one clear thing that has happened this season. Is, I haven't got a single drop of honey from either of the hives. First time in 6 years. I don't believe at all is down to the feeding of bananas . More to do with the really wet May and season I have had?

Your experiment is pretty self explanatory. The banana does not evoke any anger or aggression on the part of the bees. It makes me wonder then, if bananas, eaten by certain people, create something we’re unaware of that does in fact upset bees; or even certain bees? Science, after all, isn’t always a one size fits all.

Good to know I can have a banana sandwich before going into the hive (I did a couple of weeks ago, without adverse effect, but I have been cautious after hearing the rumours.) Had they eaten much more on your return? I have to feed mine up, as they have nowhere near the amount of honey they need for the winter. It is good to know I can feed them something nutritious too. I feed them sugar water, but hate doing so, as I'm really not a fan of sugar. I will try mashing up a banana in their sugar water, and see how this goes down compared to some without. Thanks for thinking of this, and sharing.

In order to illicit the defensive behavior from the bees you must grab the banana by one end, point the other at the bees, and sternly command them to Stick Em Up! I read that paper last year, i observed my bees ignoring banana on the landing board but eating it when placed on the frames. I'm still not entirely convinced that they did so for nutrition and not housekeeping. I wilk try again during our fall dearth. I also have barrel compost bins full of banana peels within ten feet of my hives and the bees show them no interest.

Phil, wonderful way of attracting wasps and hornets too leaving sugar rich banana outside of the hive! Might be prudent to keep feed it in just the feeder boxes???? My only worry is the level of Acetone they are consuming. You never know ....could be a Varroa repellant?
@BarefootBeekeeper
@BarefootBeekeeper 5 жыл бұрын
It's ethyl acetate in gaseous form, not acetone as such, and it didn't seem to be doing them any harm. The research paper I linked above strongly supports the use of bananas to feed bees.

Hi Sharaf, I didn't see any ill effects, but this was not a scientific study. It would be interesting to try this for a longer period, comparing banana fed, honey fed and sugar fed bees.

What research links do you have for bananas? Thanks! Here's some better data: desdelapiquera.com/wp-content/uploads/ALTERNATIVE-TO-OFF-SEASON-SUGAR-SUPPLEMENT-FEEDING-OF-HONEYBEES.pdf www.worldresearchlibrary.org/up_proc/pdf/1269-151781483062-65.pdf - It really bothers me when people don't include real research - I found this in just 10 minutes, I suspect if anyone spends just 1hr researching a topic, you'd find plenty of other studies on this topic - don't take anyone's "word" on things - Do some research online - for goodness sake its free! Research means that someone (at least) spent a week doing testing, and metrics. Everything else is just anecdotal or hearsay.

From the paper you linked: " Banana syrup feeding was found superior to others, and therefore, its supplementation can reduce the cost of sugar feeding by more than 50% and increase brood production during off-season."
