the fact that Liszt always had a great appreciation for the work of other artists such as Beethoven, made his work one of the most varied and rich in the erudite repertoire.

I discovered this video late at night and couldn’t sleep after watching it. Because of the extraordinary clarity and drive of your pianism in both precision and attack, (specially the scherzo) one can only stand in awe of Beethoven’s original concept, Liszt’s adaption, and your achievement in bringing this marvel into the World. The only thing missing was the Royal Festival Hall with a capacity audience to lift the roof with their applause at the finale. What a tragedy so few people were in attendance but what a blessing it was filmed for the whole of humanity to savour at their leisure. Thank you so much for such a spectacular and inspiring achievement by all concerned. Despite all that’s going on in the World this makes you proud to be a member of the human race. Please continue on your journey to bring more glories into the World.

Franz Liszt must havw known that his piano transcription ob Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was impossible to play on one piano; perhaps only by himself. This performance for two pianos and timpany was absolutely breathtaking, stunning. Thank you and bless you for this performance.

There is a pianist named Cyprien Katsaris who has achieved the impossible: playing the ninth symphony with just two hands. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMdnjc6ntZ6yop8.html Enjoy =D

Liszt, after having transcribed all symphonies up until the 3rd movement of the Ninth, had wished his publisher (Breitkopf & Haertel) to regard it as complete. At the end of transcribing the 3rd movement, Liszt points out that (NB) he had previously arranged the 4th movement for two pianos. He then writes, in the manuscript, translated from German: "The impossibility of an even partially satisfactory arrangement of this highly polyphonic choral-orchestral movement on *one piano* excuses its omission on the present edition of the Beethoven Symphonies." followed by a French idiom: »À l'impossible nul n'est tenu.« Well, after that, Liszt's publisher tried to convince him... and the rest was history.

What a pleasant surprise!! I have listened to excellent renditions of single piano renditions of the Liszt transcription 9th performed by Katsaris, Yuri Martynov, Glen Gould and Tristan Lauber but this 2 pianos and timpani version offers additional colours and depth. Bravo! Many thanks to all of you (three musicians plus the sound and video engineers). Keep on the great works!!

Gould did not record the 9th, and I cannot find any verification that he ever played it. But it is no great loss. His performance of the 5th and 6th, and the second movement of the 7th, all sound more like a Bach preludes than romantic-era symphonies.

52:22 why doesn’t the timpanist keep playing the triangle here? That’s how it is in the original. The triangle is to be played until the double fugue and there’s no timpani part during this section either.

Maybe because the chorus enters here

hmm… even in the original though, when the tenor solo and later the choir comes in, the triangle is played all the way until the double fugue. The ending of the triangle beat is supposed to mark the transition from the Turkish March section to the double fugue transition. I’m no scholar, mind - this is just my interpretation haha.
