I have heard at least 20 versions of this, but this one is the most magnificent. I have never heard anyone interpret the tenor role the way Jonas Kaufmann does, and it's a revelation. I felt as though I have never really heard the tenor solo before! Wonderful!

In the world you think that German is a hard and hoarse language, almost frightening. Instead this song suggests it is a very beautiful, expressive and amazing language. Italy and Germany have done so much for opera. Love from Italy to our German Brothers. Ciao:) Viva l'Europa. Viva l'Europe.

German is *not* at all a hard or hoarse language. It is incredibly melodic, amazingly flexible, and altogether gorgeous. I'm French and I'm fluent in 5 languages. By far, by very very far, German is to me the most beautiful of them all. And besides, Germans are usually quite soft spoken (unlike drunk, but who cares).

Germans soft spoken - depends on the region where you are in Germany. By the way bavarian is most popular dialect in Germany and is soft spoken. When you go up North it is more hard spoken.

what are we human beings thinking, we don't care about life, love of our fellow man. We seem only to want to wow and then stomp on each other. Divide and conquer, are we just wild animals? Things and money , we seem to worship power and money! There have always been those who created beauty and peace and there were also those who worship a false God that wanted attention through nothing but violence . How did it get so out of control? I am 80 years old and hope to see my great great grandchildren pick apples from my tree,,,G0D help the leaders of the world seek peace and cooperation so that we will continue to live and love one another, thank you,

+Michael Doyle René Pape is a German opera singer, who had his debut with the Berlin State Opera (Unter den Linden) in 1988, and with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1995. Because he and the other soloists are German, their pronunciation of the lyrics is perfect, and it sounds as Beethoven intended. Two of these opera soloists---Pape and Meier---also appeared (again with Daniel Barenboim) in the PROMS 2012 performance of the ninth symphony in London---part of Barenboim's Beethoven cycle. In that performance, Jonas Kaufmann and Anne Schwanewilms are replaced by Michael König and Anna Samuil, respectively. If you loved Pape's performance here, I think you will also love Michael König's performance there. (The four soloists were dressed in red, gold and black, putting the colors of the German flag smack-dab in the center of Royal Albert Hall. Still, some people probably didn't catch on.)

It isn't perfect diction, which isn't surprising. It's pretty commonplace for singers to be lax in their native tongue's diction. There are a lot of times that vowels which should be long are short in this performance and vice versa. The first instance of it is when Pape sings the word "Stimmen" with the i vowel pronounced like English "ee" when it should be like the I in the English word "sit."

Pape and Kaufmann are incredible here ! Their pronounciation is very good (I don't even speak german but I can tell when someone's diction is bad and it kind of tickles me) and they both have such warmth in their voice ! And warmth is, in my opinion, the most important thing when it comes to the solo parts of this masterpiece ! It's so difficult to find a "perfect" version of this piece. There is always some little detail I find in every version I try, but this one truly has something more !

This is actually not just Beethoven. Well, the music is, but not the lyrics. The lyrics are from a poem by Friedrich Schiller that predates the 9th symphony by 39 years. Take two of the most influential german figures in the history of the arts and you get arguably the grestest piece of music you will ever listen to. Beethovens music is absolutely wonderful and support Schillers poem just amazingly well. This has been in existence for close to 200 years, it's been Europe's hymn since 1972 and there's still so much hate in this world. That's just... sad...
