This was performed and recorded in the series of concerts in which these performers did the Mozart K. 491. In both cases Gould used a tonally refined, unusually light sound which Bernstein matched. The slow movement is truly exquisite.

I like this. Two very great Artists at work. it can't fail ?, can it ? - but somehow it does, to me. Can it be that Gould and Bernstein had different views on the performance of this Concerto ?, perhaps. Anyway I feel that this does'nt have the same 'electricity' that the recording of the 1st. Concerto has. Deculalion have 'restored' it very cleverly and it now sounds much 'brighter' than before, less 'muddy' sounding -- as it were. Would that Golschmann had been Conductor on all Five Concerto recordings, in my opinion that is.

Clive, I wonder if you have heard the live recording of Gould and Von Karajan performing Beethoven's Third?

This recording is discussed in detail in the book 'Absolutely on Music: Conversations with Seiji Ozasa' by Haruki Murakami. They discuss a comparison of this interpretation versus the 1957 performance of Gould with Karajan of the same piece. Two famous conductors and two very different interpretations.

yes, it was gould's own wish to play in a slower tempo. bernstein didn't agree at first with his interpretation, but they made it work in the end. it's a splendid piece!

Glenn Gould can play vast repetoire from Reneissance to Modern era but he can hardly play Chopin truely. LOL

He played Chopin's 2nd and 3rd sonatas, Ravel's La Valse and Liszt's transcriptions of the Beethoven Symphonies. He didn't play the Romantic composers usually because of their improvisational quality and for their lack of "mathematical meaning."
