A great violinist playing Beethoven's only Violin Concerto - match made in heaven

heard him play this live n 1964. He is the greatest and I have heard them all Oistrakh, Elman, Stern, Perlman et al.

There's no one I'd rather hear than Heifetz. His playing was sheer perfection. I am amazed by every note I hear. The sound is simply incredible.

Just listened to Kreisler's rendition which is also great, but....cannot help but switching back to Heifetz. His performance simply reminds me of an eagle flying in the sky!!! Incredible speed, intonation and clarity....

I listen to all the past and current greats, and many are absolutely wonderful. But when I come back to this recording I always discover anew why Heifetz is the standard.

Dazzling and full of immense beauty and virtuosity. There is a reason why Heifetz is considered the greatest violinist since Paganini . The BSO under Munch plays with passion and cohesion with the soloist. Hefeitz's cadenzas are magical . The sound quality is suprisingly good.

Also, Munch really gets it, making the orchestra meet up with the great eagle flying in the sky. This is the best performance of this concerto of all time, and it has stood the test of time. Even the sound is great.

Heifetz is on a level that nobody else has ever been able to achieve

He expressed and interpreted in such a beautiful way. Continuation of romantic scales. I haven't heard anyone who can express this piece as Heifetz does. Braham's concerto is the same. The greatest artist of all time!

Utterly radiant

I first heard this very recording 56 years ago on WJZZ radio, Bridgeport, CT. I have heard this concerto played by many others in the years since. There is no recording that touches this. Isabelle Faust comes close. That is not to say others are inferior or shouldn't be heard, it's just that Heifetz captures something transcendental in this work. I always hear something new when I listen to it.

God!! This is amazing! Nothing but the tempo of this first movement compared to other performances. It has more energy than the rest. It's gonna be my favorite version.

He has the ability to make the violin sing. His high notes are sweet sounding unlike the modern violinists whose high notes put your teeth on edge. The orchestra sounds like a Toscanini orchestra ....you can hear every note.....a magnificent performance all round.

From 2:58 through 3:03 his tone quality was so pure I thought at first it was an oboe solo starting, truly excellent. 😮

I hear tempo may be too fast. I’ve listened to his performance all my life and I feel this is just the right tempo as it’s about the continuation of the beautiful scales. I find such enchanting expressions in scale after scale I often get lost in them. Such a masterpiece!

As close to Heaven as I can get....Heifetz is the best. Prima!

A true great, the platinum standard for violinists for most of my life. I have listened to his recordings over and over, and never tire of them; or dwindle in admiration for his skill in making the violin sound beautiful. I was once a young violinist- still have mine- and walked away from it basically when I realized I could never play as well as Heiffetz.

Finally a recording in which a fast Allegro is chosen instead of the usual strenuously slow tempi, as in my opinion it absolutely should be and as Beethoven intended. The piece does not lose any of its “feeling” and gains fresh liveliness.

This deserves so many more views honestly; I know its not how most musicians interpret it, but the speed of the first movement is how I feel it should be played as.

Prof Citrin, I’m sure you want to kill us consumed with envy. And Mr North your knowledge is astounding. I for one am a lay listener guilty of a crime. In 1970 I sold this LP to get some money to take a woman out. Having heard a few recordings including Oistrakh and Perlman, I find a certain sweetness in Heifetz which is remarkable.

I keep going back to Heifetz....is there a place which has all his "best" hits? I have memories of one that had Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, etc.

The Heiferz's unique tone and subtle shifting portamenti comes from his using the pure sheep intestine gut strings as old timers like Paganini age. A and D strings. It's yellowish color and much harder to create clean tone. Heifetz had very particular way of holding the bow to create pure tone from it. This difficulty make him all the more greater technician and artist.

No one has the technique of Heifetz. Others play the allegro passages slowly with “passion” because they cannot play allegro with adequate tone and technique. I have compared all the great violinists and none compare or have compared to this dazzling technique and clarity. The sound here is quite good of the violin. The rest of the orchestra is a bit blurred, but easily heard.

Heifetz really was God's fiddler.

Brilliant performance. Beethoven originally left no cadenza in the first movement,. Heifetz plays the cadenza of Leopold Auer. Many play the cadenza written by Fritz Kreisler, including David Oistrakh, Itzhak Perlman, and Hillary Hahn.

For me, Heifetz has no rivals!

Finally, someone who actually plays the first movement allegro ma non troppo the whole way through, instead of adding in these weird ass adagio cadenza sections that were never written. From my experience, Beethoven is one of THE most meticulous and specific composers with his intentions, and if he wanted tempo changes in the first movement, he would absolutely have written it in. Just a case of people over romanticizing a youthful and energetic classical work to be “Musical”, AKA lazy.

I'm not particularly fond of Heifetz, but his Beethoven is the best there is. Tempi are well chosen and his no nonsense approach is what this concerto needs. Playing this concerto like this is only for those who have 100% technical abilities.

I may be in the minority who believes that Heifetz’s tempo is too fast for him to search out Beethoven’s real intentions. I think the concerto is about Beethoven’s confrontation with our human condition, with Beethoven expressing sadness, struggles, and ultimate triumph. Beethoven tells us in a soothing, comforting voice to have hope, to keep faith with life, and to affirm life, that it’s worth fighting for. It needs a slower tempo to express these sentiments. A little bit more of the lyrical approach will give a better balance. I feel Heifetz did not express these sentiments with sensitivity, depth, and poignancy. He merely glides along on the surface. All brilliance with no soul. Try the version with the young Daniel Lozakovich with the Munich Philharmonic conducted by Gergiev. He conveys Beethoven’s message in a beautiful, sensitive, soulful performance. The Cadenza and the ending of the first movement is especially touchingly played. And Gergiev in a surprisingly sympathetic accompaniment. In their version, the soloist, the conductor, the orchestra, and Beethoven all come together in a wonderful whole, all comrades in spiritual harmony. You will be amazed.

There’s a marvelous story told about the 1917 New York debut of then 16-year-old Vilnius-born violinist Jascha Heifetz at Carnegie Hall. Most of the great violinists living in the city seem to have been there that evening. Pianist Leopold Godowsky, a family friend of the Heifetzes, shared a box with violinist Mischa Elman, who was 10 years older than Heifetz and had studied with the same teacher, Leopold Auer. Elman was the first great Russian violinist to make an impact in the US in the 20th century. The longer the concert went on, the more uncomfortable Elman became. Finally, he turned to Godowsky and said, “It’s hot in here, isn’t it?” Quick as a wink, Godowsky shot back, “No Mischa. Not for pianists.” The rest, as they say, is history.

Although Jasha Heifetz is technically one of the best violinists ever (I think), I am not his fan because of his style of playing. But Beethoven with Heifetz is the best there is. The tempi, the nonsense approach and the flawless technique are breathtaking.
