What a fun Tim Burton film with wicked performances, set design, character design, and just expertly crafted jokes! This movie had me wanting more Beetlejuice while at the same time I felt like I had just the right amount of him. Also, isn't it weird how they spell Beetlejuice differently in the film. I wonder if spelling it differently for the title was for a reason. Thanks so much for watching! Have a great day!! :)

"Betelgeuse" is the name of a star, one of the visually largest in Earth's night sky. According to Wikipedia, the name is derived from Arabic, and roughly translates to "the hand of Orion" based on its proximity to that constellation. English pronunciations have differed over the years, but eventually saying it "Beetlejuice" became the most popular. Now, why did the movie choose that name for its title character, and why does he use the star's spelling in the movie when the title spells it the Anglicized way? I have no idea. Great reaction as always!!

@@Dylan_Platt "Why does he use the star's spelling in the movie when the title spells it the Anglicized way?" That was done for several reasons: 1.) The original spelling like you said is in relation to the orion star’s name derived from Arabic. Earlier development for the character of Beetlejuice was going to depict him as a small middle-eastern man in his miniature form and a winged demon for his monstrous form, but that all changed once Michael Keaton signed on for the role. The original spelling of the name was supposed to be in referrence to the original development’s Arabic origin. 2.) The name change was made at the last minute before the movie was released, and they didn’t have time to adjust it throughout the movie. 3.) Why was it changed in the first place? Because it was easier for marketing. The studio executives believed the adjusted spelling set the tone better that this was a comedy horror because they thought "Beetlejuice" sounded funnier and would provide a broader appeal for audiences 4.) Also a lot of people were confused for the pronounciation of the character's name with the original spelling, hence why the characters in the movie make a call out about how they don't know how to pronounce it.

Did emo really even exist in any sort of widespread and recognizable form when this came out?
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 8 ай бұрын
Technically, she's both. "Emo", in its original definition, originates from "emotional rock", a form of punk/rock music that typically involves lyrics that are "highly emotive, melodramatic, and deeply personal". As years progressed, the definition had expanded to refer to outcasts who, themselves, came across as melodramatic/overly emotional, which usually meant being manic depressive and/or possessing continued repeated thoughts of suicide. As such, many lay people tend to often misidentify those who are "emo" with the similar "goth" subculture, which largely refers to mostly introverted weirdos (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) who wear all black or other dark-colored clothes, have a macabre sense of humor, could be perceived by some as non-conformists, might be drawn towards the Victorian aesthetic, appear comfortable in the shadows instead of feeling afraid of the darkness, enjoy rain & other kinds of "bad" weather, and have a fondness for that which regular people may otherwise consider as either merely weirdly odd or even outright abnormal -- such as, having an affinity for dead things -- which thereby explains Lydia's explanation about being able to read the Handbook for the Recently Deceased: "It says [that] Live People tend to ignore the Strange & Unusual. I myself, am, Strange & Unusual." When she's first introduced, Lydia Deetz initially comes off as a deadpan goth due to her obvious negative feelings directed at her domineering, commanding post-modernist yuppie stepmother Delia & her choice of all-black attire (black button shirt, black skirt, black neck choker, black leggings, black boots, and black floppy hat). Yet, she starts becoming "emo" the precise moment she begins talking somberly about how her "whole life is a dark room. One, big dark room." while wearing a black veil (which is traditionally used in funerals) over her face, meanwhile later tearfully attempting to finish completing a suicide note & actually wanting sleazy poltergeist conman Betelgeuse to send her to the Neitherworld (within Tim Burton's take on the afterlife, there doesn't seem to be a Heaven nor Hell & instead of suffering for your sins in Purgatory, restless souls who can't move on remain in an interdimensional limbo of sorts [whereby, they can haunt the house which they lived in when they were alive at the risk of having to share space with dislikable living people or they're held up in a waiting room awaiting their long-anticipated appointment with their designated case worker who then might reassign them to somewhere else if they feel "help is needed, deserved, or available"], they can chance risking their afterlives against the ghost-consuming sandworms on Saturn [which the 1989-1992 animated series renamed to Sandworm Land to make things less confusing for the adolescent children watching], misbehaving souls that aren't even worth sending to the sandworms can be reconditioned at the saccharine concentration camp/maximum security facility that is Neither Neither Land [this was introduced in the animated series, whereby the poor unfortunate creatures who were sent there were put into a huge Jack-in-the-box that unwittingly forced them into becoming well-behaved, good-mannered Neitherworld citizens at the expense of their own individual autonomy, until the vile miscreant side of Betelgeuse finally found a way to realign with his sugary sweet Sungglejuice persona by working together to save Lydia from being forcibly reprogrammed against her will, after which he basically dismantled the entire place, much to the chagrin of its Shirley Temple-meets-Baby Doll-like caretaker Little Miss Warden], etc.) to be with Adam & Barbara simply because Lydia wishes she were dead too (of course, the Maitlands steadfastly protest against this, impressing upon Lydia that "being dead doesn't make things any easier"), never mind the fact that, even though they're dead themselves, Adam & Barbara seem to be far better parental figures for Lydia than her still living but overly stressed biological father & overbearing stepmother. By the close of the film, Lydia's now the preppy goth she became -- as voiced by Alyson Court (Alyson's also memorable roles include clown Loonette from _Big Comfy Couch_ & Claire Redfield in the _Resident Evil_ videogame franchise) -- in the spinoff animated series, even though "Lyds" wound up getting considerably de-aged from age 16 (both Winona Ryder's real-life age at the time when cast in the role for the 1988 movie, as well as Lydia Deetz's canonical age in the film itself, although it's never stated outright) to age 12 (or rather "almost 13" per her character card bio) & in the 7th grade in order to make her more relatable to the younger audience the cartoon was being marketed for, although when you account for the fact that she canonically ages a year per season & that the animated series had 4 total seasons, the cartoon version of Lydia is back to being her film age of 16 again once the animated series ran its final episode. The fairly recent musical attempted to combine particular aspects of her character from both the 1988 film & the animated series, including putting her & Betelgeuse on friendlier terms ala the cartoon whilst also holding onto much of the movie's plot that climaxes -- heh -- around him being a perverted "Creepy Dead Guy" wanting to marry a minor just to be free from the shackles of the Neitherworld bureaucracy, to the point of actually going through with the entire marital ceremony rather than cutting it off at the last second like the original movie had done or strongly reinforcing their taboo relationship through blunt subtext & suggestive innuendo aplenty like the cartoon did, but still hand-waving it off using the illegal alien "green card" excuse. The long-anticipated sequel considered 30+ years in the making that's set to come out next year has Tim Burton back in the director's chair, along with both Winona Ryder & Michael Keaton back to reprise their roles, however -- much to the dismay of fans who support the controversially taboo BJXLyds/BeetleBabes ship that was predominately responsible for keeping much of the fandom alive, regardless of whether or not detractors refuse to admit it or else, refuse to acknowledge it, for obvious pedophilia meets necrophilia reasons -- "Lyds" in the sequel is finally all grown up herself with a daughter of her own now, to be portrayed by _Wednesday_ headliner Jenna Ortega. What this ultimately means for Lydia's relationship -- whatever it may be -- with "The Ghost With the Most" is anyone's guess.

Fun Fact: Beetlejuice not telling Lydia his name and making her guess is a Reference to Rumplstiltskin. This makes no sense in the movie however at least from Lydia's POV, but is Just Beetlejuice's way of getting Lydia to say his name not once, not Twice, but Thrice!
@cesarjimenezanimator
@cesarjimenezanimator Ай бұрын
I figured Beetlejuice and Rumplestiltskin had a lot in common. Not just for the use of the number 3, but the fact that Beetlejuice himself can help people out with their predicaments, BUT he is also a troublemaker with his own agenda. Despite him helping people out in some places, they had to get rid of him before he went too far with his own personal goals. So this whole movie is basically a reimagining of Rumplestiltskin.

The room of the lost souls (or the exorcized room) is mentioned later, when Adam and Barbara appear it's because Otho was exorcizing them without knowing what he was doing and that's why they were withering and old looking, they would have gone to the lost souls room if Beetlejuice hadn't stepped in

Not always, but quite a lot of the time, when Tim Burton directed a movie, he often got Danny Elfman to compose the music. The two of them worked together a lot over the years, and Elfman always seems to know exactly what Burton wants when it comes to providing the music for a film. If you really like Tim Burton's direction and Danny Elfman's music, I would recommend Edward Scissorhands (1990). Elfman's music in that movie was hauntingly beautiful and amplifies the emotions from the film scenes in ways that are difficult to find elsewhere.

Wait, have you ever watch the original Dune movie? With the new movie coming out, maybe watch it in order to capitalize on the hype. Fun Fact: During the sequence where Adam and Barbara enter Juno's office and see her speaking to a recently deceased football team, a movie theater full of ghosts can be seen through Juno's office window. When the film was released in theaters, the scene created the illusion that the living and dead audiences could see each other. Among the ghosts in the audience are a red skeleton and a green skeleton, a woman with red hair, and two men in suits and Ray-Ban style sunglasses.

Maybe they spelled it different so when you type it three times like you did up top you don't invoke him!! Whew! BTW Elfman is one of my top 3 soundtrack guys along with Thomas Newman and the Game Of Thrones guy. I think he did over 15 of Tim Burton's movies. You can just tell it's him from his "Simpsons" intro sound that he gives his faster music. The music he did for Edward Scissorhands could be my favorite soundtrack of all time. When you get to "The Nightmare Before Christmas" you'll get to hear him sing really well too. Back in the 80's he was frontman for a popular band and had some songs in 80s movies before doing scores.

Funny thing is, even if they were vampires, the whole no reflection in the mirror situation wouldn't happen. The only reason vampires were not seen in mirrors in the past is because back then mirrors were using thin sheets of silver in the manufacturing process, and you know how vampires are with silver. So, that means that modern day mirrors would show vampires, because we don't use valuable silver in common household items like mirrors, anymore. Also, people have seen ghosts in mirrors. It's a big clue as to the fact that it's a ghost, when you look into a mirror and you see someone who's not really physically in the room with you.

6:16 Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! A childhood favorite of mine (and just you said at 28:26 “What a strangley fun movie”, yes it IS admittingly a strange one to have as a favorite too) which I was looking forward to watching you react to. I hope you’re ready, so open up your gas tank, Ollie, because I’m about to fill it up with premium octance knowledge of interesting facts of what went into making this strange albeit funny piece of entertainment. This movie is considered to be one of, if not Michael Keaton’s best role in his career (BTW this was also one of Winona Ryder’s first roles that shot her to stardom, and she was only 16 when she was cast for the role, so it’s no wonder you weren’t able to recognize her at first as you said at 14:34 that you didn’t realize it was her until that point), yet it’s funny to consider that for the fact that Keaton’s given little time on screen as you mention at 39:00 (his total screen time is about 18 minutes for the entire movie’s 92 minute runtime). Casting for the titular role of Beetlejuice took a long time, and the only reason Michael Keaton got the role was because he was recommended to Tim Burton by producer David Geffen. Tim Burton had a good feeling about Keaton when he met him and wanted to take a chance on him, and even though Michael Keaton didn’t understand the premise film, and was confused by the overall weird tone and imagery, he still decided to take the role. He only took the role because Keaton liked Tim Burton enough to trust his creative instincts and as a gesture of good faith Burton gave Keaton certain liberties when doing the role (in terms of his performance, his character design, wardrobe and so on, so to answer you at 26:34 “I wonder if he ad-libbed his jokes”, yes he did). So the whole look, mannerisms and design was done by Keaton himself (from the crazy hair, the bags under his eyes, the mold on his mouth and chin, and the variety of suits worn). And even though he has as little screen time as he does, he was originally supposed to have less, but when they showed the movies to test audiences, they loved the character so much, they asked for more. So before the movie was released, they went back and shot the last scene at 27:47 with Beetlejuice in the waiting lobby as a way to end the movie less severe for Beetlejuice (in terms of his punishment) along with a more comedic take on it than what the original ending had in mind. Hope that clears your confusion you mentioned at 41:02. This movie was highly successful both critically and commercially, so much so that it was followed by a huge amount of merchandise, a line of action figures and an animated series that lasted for 4 seasons (which is above averages when it comes to children’s animated series, which usually have a lifespan of about 2 to 3 seasons. BTW the animated series was good, and like the movie it was REALLY weird!). Now I mention all of that because despite the huge amount of success the movie had, we never got a sequel. It’s an interesting history because a sequel for Beetlejuice has been talked about and rumored ever the first movie was released, and there’s been a lot of false confirmations from Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Tim Burton throughout the years. Winona Ryder and Tim Burton have hinted that it might happen, but it seems that one of the main things preventing it from happening is the development. Tim Burton had mentioned that at the time, Beetlejuice was a side project he was working on while he was waiting to get the green light from Warner Bros. to make Batman (which he would go on to make after Beetlejuice and would also star Michael Keaton in the titular role). Tim Burton would also foreshadow, hint, and easter egg his next planned movies that he would go on to make which can be found in this movie, primarily in the bio exorcism scene (with the bat wings on the ears of Beetlejuice at 24:52 which hints of Batman, which would be the next movie he made, and with the small skull on Beetlejuice’s carousel head piece resembling that of Jack Skellington, which also hints of The Nightmare Before Christmas being the next film followed after Batman). Also interesting to know it was said the development for the first Beetlejuice movie took 4 years, and with no confirmations or updates on the development from studios, the earliest we can expect to see a sequel if it happens would be 2024 at the earliest (BTW if the sequel was made, would you go see it? I’d like to know, because I know I definitely would go see it. HBU?) Last thing to mention would be the spelling of the character’s name like you mention at 44:24. It was originally supposed to be “Betelguese” (pronounced as Beetlejuice and the name is actually in connection to the brightest star in the orion constellation as one of the comments already mentioned so I won’t go into what it’s meaning is or its origin). Anyway, like you said the original name spelling can be found throughout the entire movie and is even listed as “Betelguese” in the end credits. But the spelling of the character’s name was changed at the last minute for a couple of reasons. This was done because it was easier for marketing, it was believed that the adjusted spelling set the tone better that this was a comedy horror (which was done just so it can get its PG rating and be considered more family appropriate, because it was originally only supposed to be a horror film. BTW I find it interesting that it’s rated PG even though Beetlejuice dropped an “F” bomb in the movie at 16:36) and perhaps the biggest reason, was because a lot of people were confused for the pronounciation with the original spelling. Going now into some Bonus Random things you didn’t know. The soundtrack for the movie was comprised primarily of the calypso music as a way to make the movie more fun and upbeat, and as way to try to balance the comedy and the horror together, which obviously worked as you as you mention at 31:51. Also did you notice at 9:37 that Delia is wearing a Glove for a tiara? And how at 14:52 Delia is actually wearing a sweater for pants? Not just any sweater, but the exact same that her husband, Charles wears at 11:04. 7:15 “Who are you? I hate you.”, 9:38 “Most emo person on the planet”, 4:54 “The Dog’s a murderer, put him in jail.”, 17:19 “She has become the song”, 8:41 “I hate the wife and this prententious CHEMISTRY MAN. Sucks too”, 19:07 I’m going to punch this guy in the face,7:31 “It’s so ugly!” I say this a lot but your commentary is funny! 16:55 “She’s still upset, because somebody dropped a house on her sister” Haha, Wizard of Oz Reference!! That’s why she was laughing at it, but I think that joke fell flat with you. Anyways, good reaction as usual, especially for the moments at 18:04, 24:59, 7:58, 13:59, 21:07, 15:40, 19:23, & 16:09. BTW I’m looking forward to Candyman & Hellraiser!

I would definitely go see a sequel to this film if it ever came out!! I am super glad Michael Keaton attached himself to this project even though it made no sense to him at the time cause I cannot see anyone else playing that role. Also, I did think it was weird that it kept its PG rating even though Beatlejuice swears during the film and drops an F bomb like you said. I am glad it stayed PG though as this film is top tier family entertainment.

@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Good. A sequel that's has been long-anticipated is finally, at long last, presumably set to come out next year.

Adam: "What are your qualifications?" Betelgeuse: "Ah. Well... I attended Juilliard... I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I've seen the EXORCIST ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT... NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY... NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK?!?!?!?!? You think I'm qualified?"

The special effects were not the best for the time. Tim Burton only had a small special effects budget. He decided to intentionally make the special effects look cheesy. This choice is brilliant as it actually adds to the tone of the movie.

Don't know where you get those t-shirts but they're hilarious. And I have no idea why you thought Bettlejuice was a musical but I understand why you avoided it, I would too to most musicals

It is now a stage musical it was written & composed by Tim Minchin (who also wrote & composed Matilda The Musical) & Eddie Perfect (main lead in Shane Warne The Musical & currently on stage in Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 The Musical) who are both respectively Australian comedians who loved musical theatre growing up. There was a Beetlejuice stage musical back in 2018, so maybe that's why you thought it was a musical? I've heard some of the songs and they're really fun!
