Saw Norman in his pomp at Sy Andrews in 1984. Nobody could crush the ball off the tee like he could. Unbelievable.

The British press called Faldo, Nick Foldo before he broke through and won the Open. That is where that comment to Norman came from in their embrace on the 18th. Faldo knew how much hurt Norman was in for, regardless of how well he handled that collapse on the surface. The comment was full of care for Greg and says a lot about who Faldo really is.

I always liked and respected Greg Norman. The class he showed after a six stroke lead slipped away and he missed out getting a green jacket was amazing! I had the pleasure of meeting him and had a great conversation with him. What a nice gentleman! A great deal of athletes could learn how to act and show good sportsmanship from him.

At the presser after the final round Norman remarked "Well at the end of the day I still have $40 million" That pretty much sums up the difference between this guy and Nicklaus or Woods. He was all about the money and not the game.

Despite the fact it has been almost 30 years, I can still remember the 1996 Masters clearly because I wanted " The Shark" Greg Norman to win !! He had that big lead and then all hell broke loose. Norman was an amazing golfer!!

What many people don’t remember is on the 72nd hole of the 1987 Masters, his final putt somehow missed going into the hole, and he ended up in the playoff with Seve and Larry Mize. We all know what happened to him on the 2nd hole of the playoff (Augusta’s par four 11th).

Lots of good comments. I fell in love with golf back in '81 in the UK. Peter Alliss quickly became one of my heroes. The BBC came up with an idea for a 2 top men v 2 top women show over a few holes around Woburn GC, filmed and shown in the middle of winter. Alliss introduced Severiano Ballesteros and Greg Norman as "the two most exciting golfers in the world today". He was right. Seve obviously well established with majors under his belt already but Norman yet to make his mark. Norman's swashbuckling style was a massive hit both in the uk and the US for the next few years and with Seve took golf popularity to a new level. If you weren't around in the early '80's you wouldn't appreciate the type of game they wowed the spectators with. I think Nicklaus was similar but on reflection was just too slow and ponderous to attract the new generation. Norman dominated the world game for a while except for the majors. Was he just unlucky? I think he was to a degree. I would argue that the meltdown at Augusta in '96 was because of many close disappointments since as far back as 1981. He was already regarded as one of only two players in the whole world who could actually take on the yanks in the pressure cooker environment of the PGA tour! We had Sandy Lyle, such a great striker of the ball, super long etc but never matched them until years later. Same with Faldo. Norman literally had a golf superpower with the old persimmon driver. Longer and straighter than anyone else. Finished with the arrival of the new metal head. Now that WAS unlucky. Unfortunately it does appear he is a narcissist and his conduct over the last years has been horrendous. Shame.

Greg trying to convince the world it was injury why he blew the Masters. Now , if this had been Tiger or Jack, you'd maybe probably agree. It was one of those days. This was Greg Norman. A serial bottler. He won about shed loads of regular events and a combined total of two majors. He was mentally weak. He was the 20th century Dustin Johnson.

Sadly every time my golfing mate looks at him he says “Choke Norman!” As a Faldo fan I was glad he won in ‘96, but jeez that must have hurt Norman so bad. But I don’t think we should feel sorry for him. He’s made hundreds of millions of dollars hitting a little white ball around a closely mown field and his legacy will be the disaster that is LIV golf. For Norman it was always about the $$ My mate lost all respect for him in 1996 as a choker. I lost respect for him after LIV.
