I've been enamoured with the DC-3 every since I saw (as a child) the Bugs Bunny cartoon with "the gremlin," (The Falling Hare, 1943). Came to learn later as an adult that this plane had, up to that era, was the most successful, safest, most sturdy and reliable plane ever designed, and one of the leading factors in the success and victory of the United States in WWII. Like a Cadillac, you can't kill a DC-3 unless you neglect it. The mere silhouette of a DC-3 speaks to me and I think I could spot one in the air at one mile but this is such a rare treat.

I've always loved the DC 3, thanks to these wonderful folks , I have experienced the Goonie Bird better than I can in my life . Thank you Joe, Mikey you especially because I know you put this stuff here , and all your family.

Pilot and DC3, one soul flying

Most excellent Joe and Mikey! What a different world this would be if everyone loved their job and had a passion for it that Joe does, especially for over 50 years! Joe's way of teaching with analogies not only reinforces the information, but it also puts a smile on your face. Knowing Joe's high standards and expectations in the cockpit, his way of explaining things seems to provide a perfect balance between the fun of flying and the expectation that a student master every detail of piloting the aircraft. Ole Billy Robert's 'government name' is actually Mikey too, so from one Mikey to another, "This Mikey Likes it (a lot!)."

Great series especially for those of us who will never fly ourselves. Fascinating.

Mikey, you really should call this series "Song For My Father," after the classic jazz tune by the great Horace Silver. This is a wonderful tribute to your Dad as well as a "Master Class" for the rest of us. I'm loving this so far - I hope there are several more parts in the pipeline. I wish I could come up to Yellowknife and start in as a ramp rat or sweeping the hangar or whatever. Right now, I'm tied up here right now - but I keep hoping. I'd love to try the CL-215, even as a ride-along, as well as the DC-3. Thanks again, Mikey.

What Joe doesn't know abput DC3 you can forget, he's the master DC3 pilot ❤👏👏👏

I had a DC-3 fuel inspection valve stick open at a jungle airstrip in Brazil. We couldn't fix it with what we had. So I put my finger on it to stop the fuel flow until we could find a small enough tree branch twig to plug the opening and then waited for 5 hours until one our mechanics flew in to fix it. The bleed valve pintle was badly oxidized from water corrosion. You just never know what is going to break or happen in the outback.. I remember thinking if we had not had the leak on the ground but up in the air, how fast fuel would have siphoned out of tank.

Qualified as an aircraft fitter on the DC4 & got my competencies on the DC3 also. I was in the South African Air Force, who was the biggest operator of DC3 aircraft in the world at the time (1983 to 1989).

Thanks for posting this! I had a chance to tour the cockpit of a C-47 which had flown the Hump in WW2, and is now flying in WA State.
