Beginner Blacksmithing forming eyes
Gday everyone and welcome back to the channel,
Today we move on in the Beginner Blacksmith classes with how to forge eyes.
We start with an offset eye, next up is a rat tail scroll which at it's simplest is a small offset eye and lastly is the classic forged eye often used as the end on fire tools etc.
I am using just some scrap steel for this exercise, there is no point wasting good steel on the practice for this when you have some scrap sitting around, also it is much cheaper and easier to get some scrap from a scrap yard to practice than spend good money on on new material for practicing your hammer techniques.
Just make sure to thoroughly clean any rust off before use as the rust can break off and send hot fragments through the air.
Thank you for watching and bye for now

Well done. I struggle with the horn and need to get more practice on it. Thanks for showing your techniques, well done... OBTW, I think we all have the dropsies in the Blacksmith trade. Just par for the course in my shop... Thanks for sharing... Take care...

Worst part of the horn work for me is my stump isn't fastened down so get a bit of jump. This weeks will be a couple of alternative methods of bending eyes. My grip is still strong which is good, but the sense of feeling not there which makes it a little tricky.

Hi new friend. So glad we found your channel. We have clicked your buttons and are excited to journey with you. VERY cool what you're doing here. None of us has ever done this ourselves but we REALLY enjoyed getting to watch and learn more about it this summer in Colonial Williamsburg. Really cool to see your process on the anvil. We've hit the button and are excited to watch your videos.

Ausome work there! I love the way the carbonization flakes off while working it. That's a tough break on the hands. The dropping is one thing, making sure you pick it up the right way every time is another. I have burned or cut myself many times trying to not let things fall or grabbing them with out thinking. I bet it only takes once to learn that lesson with what you do. Turning iron into butter! Great stuff!

Homestead Aquarius mate when it falls in the forge it hits the floor, hard to stop that compulsive catch instinct, but yeah scars help to remind you. Found faith and was alive after the crash, still say I won that one

Hey Jan, it is fun to do and gets you thinking more than people would think. For this I am using some old scrap steel, in general just a mild steel, but I also use recycled steel, car springs etc.

Hitting hot steel with hammers. Is there any better therapy? May I suggest locking pliers. Customise the jaws as needed.

It is a great way to relax for sure. Hate locking pliers in the forge, handles are not as long as my reins on the tongs either, working on the gas forge I need the length. Will need to make up some tong clips.
