Also you can look into “kiln timeshares” from community centers or studios or local colleges to get your piece fired. You will have to buy Stoneware Clay (mid fire clay) if you want to use that Mayco glaze, otherwise your pieces will either not come out the right color or your clay body will melt in the kiln😬😬 practicing with the air dry clay is an awesome idea! But yes pls lmk if it would be cool to send you that google doc for successful firings in the future

You probably have figured this out by now but that glaze and clay arent going to work together. The glaze needs to go to a higher temperature than the clay can handle (its going to melt in the kiln)

Andy Ward does low fire clay techniques using ancient pottery methods. You just have to have a safe place to fire.

As someone else had mentioned, that particular glaze is for midfire clay, not lowfire. You might also be interested in looking at underglazes (which can be used for any temperature-but the temperature will affect the hue/saturation/value results of the colors) for color and knowing your penchant for detail, I think you might be interested in a technique called sgraffito. It’s usually 1 color, but it doesn’t have to be- the closest things I can compare it to is like linocut or woodcut printing- it’s where you color the piece and carve out the clay colored parts. It’s great fun and myself and others who are more flat/graphic illustration style like it for its crisp lines. There are also other fun things to do with underglazes like bubble techniques, more water color-y techniques, etc. after the underglaze is on and dry, if you want it shiny, apply a low fire clear glaze. You should make a diy kiln/oven somewhere in your yard and you might be able to not only fire your clay and make it bisque ware but also experiment with raku

Clay is actually pretty safe to eat. Unless the clay you got came from a site with heavy metal or PFAS pollution, in which case it can be very carcenogenic. But most clay (especially what's commercially available in the US) is totally safe. Most clay is just Kaolinite (Al2Si2O5(OH)4), a natural mineral that is sometimes used in medicine to treat stomach problems

Long ago I learned on a manual wheel, and I’m sure ye could make one!!! It’s two bearings on a shaft held up on a frame, and ye cast a concrete flywheel to kick in a round plastic tub, like the one the wheel can then go in! And eating a little bit of clay is totally safe if it’s free of contaminants. (Cake is fine, though!)

i have been wanting a wheel for years now and always thought i had to go for one of the "good" ones that cost over a thousand euros. but seems like i was wrong. you did great with this 150 dollar wheel! i think i'll also look into one of those so i might finally get back into pottery again
