I’m attempting to build my largest Warhammer model yet as a beginner to the hobby! It’s something I’ve been putting off for a long time now, the larger models are pretty intimidating but TODAY I push through that fear and attempt to build a Riptide Battlesuit for the first time.

What's the largest model you've worked on so far? do you have a favourite? Let me know, I'd love to hear about it!

I'm currently working on an adeptus titanicus warlord titan. Not very big compared to its 40k scale counterpart but still big compared to most models

A Forgeworld Phantom Titan. Resin (especially of that size) is pretty hard to work with. You have to manually clean each part beforehand in order to get it ready for painting and more often than not some parts get warped which also need to be manually fixed. Not to mention superglue is just never not a pain to work with

The main thing I've found with large models is that most the parts are pretty easy, but sometimes they do throw in a small fiddly part as a curve ball, but compared to smaller models which are all fiddly parts, it's usually not too bad. Sometimes you do need to be careful with parts, such as similar parts for left/right differences. I've almost been caught out on some larger models because the feet were very similar and getting them the wrong way round can cause the model to sit wrong. Also yes please on magnets. I built an invictor warsuit and somehow managed to get some magnets the wrong way round repeatedly, I'm just glad I have a second to make so I can flip it the other way for the parts I did get wrong!

I have found that too with the smaller pieces, you’re lured into a false sense of security with the nice big pieces and then out of nowhere you have a fiddly bit - on the Riptide it was the shield for me, I nearly glued the sticking out bits all in the wrong positions!! Yeah I’ve done that on early models too with getting the polarities wrong then making a real mess trying to dig the magnet out! My “polarity stick” has made it easy now - haven’t got it wrong since. Thanks for watching again Paul! Your latest video had me laughing out loud, an unhinged rant about the balance updates was just what I needed.

That's what I'm working on now - I'm challenging myself to only use my airbrush, no regular brushes allowed! We'll see if that was a good idea or not when I release the video next week haha.

Biggest model so far is the Dominus class Knight. Took me well over 10 hours spread over a whole weekend to cut it out, prep it, magnetize it, and finally glue it all together. Got 2 more planned for the near future... guess my unpainted "Grey Legion" will just continue to grow. I also think that size doesn't equal longer to build. I recently built built a leviathan Dreadnought, which with magnetization and all took well over 4 hours to finish. But something like a marine Repulsor (which is quite a bit bigger) only cost me like 2 hours to finish. It depends a lot more on the intricacy and the complexity of a build, which is quite difficult to estimate when you only see the size.

Dominus class Knights are do damn cool! I've got the Knight Abominant and was so tempted to just go in with that for this video, but decided to do a Riptide as my first step up. I'm also growing a Grey Legion, what a coincidence! I do agree with you that size doesn't necessarily mean longer to build - that was one of my surprises when building this Riptide, I was shocked when I saw large pieces on the sprue - I'd assumed there would be a lot of small parts to make up the bigger ones (like the jetpack) and was relieved when it ended up being much easier than I'd built it up to be in my head.

@@TinBearStudios For knights I can highly recommend getting a set of various magnets. getting 6-7 variants out of a single kit is very nice and saves costs. The Dominus was also very straightforward to build. lots of pieces, yes, but things like the legs being only a few pieces made it super easy to build. The Leviathan was more complicated in that sense. lots of small pieces, having to check, double and even triple check to make sure I had the right one and was putting it in the right place. Results were worth it though, he's a chonky boy and is definitely the centerpiece of my marine army!

@@ninthaquila8208 I do enjoy my magnets! Feels great when you get all the load outs for the model magnetised so you can do whatever you like. The Leviathan is an awesome model, sounds awesome - feel free to send me a pic (same name on Instagram) if you feel like sharing, I'd love to see it.

I generally find bigger models easier, cutting the bits off the sprue and smoothing moldlines goes better compared to troop sized ones.... its the middle sized models I've found the hardest, the paragon war suits from the sisters had a few fiddley parts which were a pain and I found getting the limbs of tyranid monsters to stay where you want them while glueing was a nightmare because of the weight, my usual troop technique of a stack of coins proping up the gun etc, didn't work.
@TinBearStudios
@TinBearStudios Жыл бұрын
Stack of coins is genius! I'm going to try that one out. I've got to admit I massively enjoyed building the model and I'm looking forward to the next one too.

If I'm gonna be honest i actually love building large models. I guess its because I used to build model planes so I'm used to having hundreds of little parts. Although it ends up taking ages because I spend too much time posing the model to integrate it into the base😅
@TinBearStudios
@TinBearStudios Жыл бұрын
I really want to get into posing soon (on any model) to tie it in with the base, seems like it'll be fun but I'm worried the model will look like it's floating!
@inquisitor_snake
@inquisitor_snake Жыл бұрын
@@TinBearStudios oh yeah I've had stuff like that before. It's quite scary since once you glue it into that position, it's extremely difficult to try and fix it. In fact, on the adeptus titanicus titan I'm currently working on, I stupidly didn't check if the armour fitted with the pose I had put it in and ended up having to tear a few chunks off of some of the panels to make them fit. But it's ok because I'll just call that "battle damage". But yeah posing large models takes alot of time and patience to get everything lined up perfectly so if you're in a hurry, it's not the best idea
@TinBearStudios

I nearly went right in and built the Knight for this video but the fear was real, haha. Going from the largest thing I'd built being a Crisis Suit to a Knight seemed like a fun concept at first but then I was like "Nope!" What are some of your largest builds?
