Simple seascape watercolor painting for your to do. Limited palette. This is episode 3 in my beginner watercolor class series.
My PATREON MEMBERSHIP PAGE: www.patreon.com/user/membersh... - in addition to ad-free content you get exclusive content (new videos will be more in depth than those on my KZfaq channel), hi-resolution reference photos, photos of my finished painting, and drawing outlines where available. Other benefits are also included.
My teaching manual: Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide: amzn.to/3ZF2FRW
In this episode I paint a simple seascape using limited colors.
This subject uses all the brush techniques studied in episode 2 of this series. This seascape includes a dramatic sky, figures, the ocean, and rocks and waves.
The next video will look at color mixing, tones, and creating a color wheel you can use as a reference for the remainder of this course.
I also have a couple of watercolor painting books which I published and distribute through Amazon.
The first one, which has sold over 10,000 copies is bascially my teaching manual and is titled:
Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide.
The second is full of step by step demonstrations and is titled: Watercolor Step By Step: amzn.to/3z4YXEu
Both books are available in kindle format and paperback.
You can also find a lot of useful information on my website: www.paintingwithwatercolors.com/

Hello from California! Thanks for doing these videos as they are very helpful. I have been painting for 2 years but decided to "start over" in order to get a better grip on the basics. I'm very happy to have recently found you to help me. After this 3rd tutorial I bought your book. I keep peaking over your shoulder to view your studio and was happy to see a photo in your book. I am always envious of others' studios and hope someday to have more than just a part of a table. Thank you again for providing these wonderful resources.

I appreciate your generosity in investing so much of your time...this indeed is a gift for us newbies!!!🎉 I have been studying multiple other tutorials for about 1 week now, but this is the first tutorial on landscape that I have tried. Hello, from Canada. I started painting 3 months ago. I took a course and painted every day for 3 hours for 3 weeks. I’ hooked. I’m so glad to have found you on KZfaq. I watched your #3 then watched again and tried. Your explanation about the horizon and where to place things was excellent. I also liked the way you mixed paint and explained it. You are right it is easy to work small when starting out. I wish I could show you my painting. It is the first one I have done that I am pleased with. I hope you are still making videos. Looking forward to trying #3 again in 10 weeks.

I painted the seascape today! HA!! much to learn. My paint color was more sepia than blue/black. but I went with it. I had the most trouble with the figures and the shadows of the tiny birds on the sand. Blotted and repainted about three times. I'm probably going to do this exercise again. I wish there was a way to post work, so you could critique it.

Thanks for this demo! I loved watching you paint the clouds and appreciated your explanation of the heads aligning close to the horizon line. II would have liked to have seen how the values in the painting looked once the watercolor dried. The cliffs and water appeared to be close in value. Is that what you might see in real life or would the cliffs be darker? Hope to hear back from you, Joe and thanks in advance for your help!
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 2 жыл бұрын
You are welcome! This demo was designed to help students get familar with all the basic brush strokes. in real life cliffs may be darker or lighter, depending on the lighting conditions and the colour of the cliff material. Best just to look at various photos to see what I mean. Also, it is quite likely some parts of a cliff will be darker than others e.g. around rocks for instance.

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Just learning watercolour and so exciting. Im wondering though about contaminating the colours. What do you do to clean them? Ive been cleaning my brush each time so I don't dirty the colours. So Im a bit confused.
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 11 ай бұрын
I am very happy you are enjoying my videos. Do not worry about contaminated colours. Quite often the contaminating colours are those that will be mixed together in any case. Only clean your brush if going from one colour to its complementary colour e.g. going from blue to orange. I will produce a video on this in the future as my reply cannot cover all situations.

I have never used Daniel Smith paints, so I can't compare. Go with French Ultramarine, a cool red like Permanent Rose or Alizarin Crimson, or Crimson Magenta, and one of the yelllows. For the beginner exercises, colour is not so important.

I have been painting with watercolours for nearly quarter of a century Joe, and teaching for most of that time - so I do have a little advantage over you. :-) Seriously though, the important thing is to practice, observe what worked and what didn't, work out what skill area needs improving and then concentrate on that either in the same painting when you repeat it or in similar one. Just have fun with a brush in your hand.

Thanks for your instructions. I have a queston about wettening the paper. I usually wet the paper and fasten it with tape on a wooden board. Then I wait foor several hours to see the paper is dry and flat. I saw your way of working without taping the paper on a board. And I've tryed it too. Probably I did somerthing wrong, because in the end I had to fasten it as before with tape, because the paper curled. So may be you can explane what could be the reason of this. I wetted the paper several times as you explaned in one of the video's and wettened the board too. I use paper with a weight of 300gr/m. Hope to hear from you.
