The Rum Revival

Күн бұрын

It’s time we talked about what might be one of the most hyped rum releases ever: Appleton Estate 17 Year Old Legend.
On May 17th, Appleton revealed the upcoming release of Appleton Estate 17 Year Old Legend. Why’s it a big deal? Why’s it a legend? And why are some folks upset about it? Let’s break it all down.
This rum is a re-creation of the legendary rum crafted by J. Wray & Nephew in the 1940s: Wray and Nephew 17 Year. Which just happens to be the rum that Trader Vic used in 1944 to create the original Mai Tai. Yep, this is the rum that started it all. The rum that folks in the Tiki scene have been waiting for forever.

Unlike the core lineup of Appleton products, this is a 100% pot still rum and blend of those four rare marks I mentioned. It was distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2022, giving us the 17 years. It was all aged in ex bourbon barrels and bottled at 49% abv.

Another great video, Arminder. Please keep up the good work, thinking this channel will be growing exponentially. Love the comments and tasting of the Appleton 17 as well as the Mai Tai. Did you use the "classic" 3/4 oz lime, or the recipe on the Legend box? Hopefully Appleton is continuing to produce these marques so that we may have another opportunity next year.

Good to hear that the rum really comes alive in a mai tai! I do have to say that the (at least according to your pallete) lack of fruity hogo is making me feel a lot less bad about not getting to try it myself. Considering it's all pot still, I was really hoping for an Appleton with a bit of amped-up funk, even if it was rounded off by the age. It would be cool if Appleton/J Wray did some more pure pot still releases, maybe ones that are a little more available and a little less cost prohibitive lol.
@kidyuki1
@kidyuki1 Жыл бұрын
Like you said, it makes sense for them to release the 17 year under the Appleton brand, but if they did do the NAS mai tai blend like you said, it'd interesting if they did it under J Wray and called it "original mai tai rum" or something like that.

One would suspect that the people who made W&N would have some to match the flavor. Three dots and a dash in Chicago has a bottle of W&N and a vintage orange liqueur which they noted was sweeter than current curaçao’s. You can get a mai tai with them for $800. There is an article in food&wine. I’ve had their regular priced mai tai which tries to emulate it and it’s good but I like the ones make at home Bette because they are to my tastes… my wife and friends like it better too.

@@therumrevivalRR, can you recommend any Trinidad rums that are without additives?
@therumrevival
@therumrevival 3 ай бұрын
@@BhutWhut That's tough as I'd recommend looking for an independent bottling of trinidad rum but generally I'm not seeing any on the market at this moment. Holmes Cay has some Ten Cane Trinidad rums out that are additive free, but I wasn't in love with it. There are some new Samaroli Trinidad releases but I haven't had them and they are kinda pricey.

@@therumrevival I've had Angostura 1919 but it seemed very sweet and the vanilla was overwhelming. I was just looking for something at the price point of Kaniche (Barbados) but from Trinidad. I know that on the island they have a great variety, but I guess much of it doesn't get exported. At least there are lots of Barbados options here stateside. BTW, we rummies appreciate the great job you're doing with this channel. Keep it up. 👍

@@BhutWhut Yeah I really wish the Angosutra stuff didn't taste so sweet. Having looked into it a bit more, definitely seems like there is a hole in the market for an undosed affordable trinidad rum. Also, thank you for watching and the support!

I’d be interested to know the rest of your recipe. What orange liqueur and orgeat and how much? I’ve been tweaking my recipe for a year.
