It was definitely a put down of Midori Ito one of the best skater of all times. Why will we remember these Russian children in 30 years? Because of their amazing careers or because of the child abuse sanctioned by government? It will be like what we remember about Sochi 2014 cheating by government sanctioned doping.

He said they told him he would no longer be coaching Yuna Kim rather unceremoniously one morning, and as such his team stopped coaching her. Yuna's mom released her own statement saying something about this being temporary and that Yuna would be back. When Brian wouldn't take her back, Yuna/her mom started saying he was lying. So it's possible that she herself initiated the split because it was a good way to cut back on her training or otherwise prepare for retirement, only to be forced back into competition for Sochi.”

Unless she discovered a healing elixir, I don't think keeping them young is the issue. She destroys them young after 4 years of overtraining with injuries. So even a 10 year old would be forced to retire at 15, after a senior style of elite competition rounds.

I can see it rather as a dark comedy. It would be fun to watch.

I experienced the same exact thing, I've skated from age 4-16 years old. Skating really gave me a love and hate relationship, it felt like skating took all my childhood away, when my friends can go out on weekend, I had to practice and practice for hours. I got to land a few triple jumps, but.. all the pain physically and mentally, my childhood, and idk what else I missed while spending my entire childhood for skating.. It must be really hard for this young girls gone through, especially Kamila with the whole world focusing on her

Have you ever wondered why Tutberidze's students are so successful? Or why Soviet gymnasts were legendary? Some elements they performed even have been banned because of health risks. In a competitive sports, especially such as figure skating, gymnastics, acrobatics, almost nothing is possible without a things that you call a child abuse. These athletes know this, their parents know this, fans know this, coaches know this. If you accept competitive sports than you automatically accept this. Overworking, injuries, health issues for the rest of your life most likely, pressure etc. I'm not defending Tutberidze, I don't care about her. These kids are not victims of anyone, they are athletes, which means they are victims of figure skating. Coach is just a person who helps them to reach hights and the more tough is this coach the more successful they'll be

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva is so inspirational. As an American, it is so wonderful seeing a grown Russian woman compete. I wish Canada had granted Evgenia Medvedeva citizenship, so that she did not have to return to Russia to be abused.

I’ve always enjoyed Her Imperial Majesty’s (😉) skating & ITA : It is wonderful to see an actual Russian LADY competing out there. I really loved her FS all the way back in October at Skate Canada. Such a perfect Program for her & was she ever having a blast performing it too!! 😁. I also remember the very first time she came over for Skate Canada. This seemingly adorable precocious little Russian girl getting her feet wet at her first Senior GP Event & doing everything w/the biggest grin on her face. I remember thinking, “She’s got a bright future...” Then she skated & we all went...😱. Hard to believe it was all those years ago & I’ve literally watched her grow up in front of my eyes. I was really pulling for her to finally skate on Olympic Ice, but sadly...We all know the rest. 😪. I’ve been thinking a lot about The Empress the last 2 days & wondering how she must be feeling watching all of this take place. She must also be wondering how many Olympic Teams did she miss a legitimate chance of being on? I know presumed innocence before guilt, but there’s just too much precedence from the last 8 years of how that “Woman” treats her Skaters, plus the too high Marks/GOE, etc, etc, etc... Not that Liza hasn’t had her own issues w/entries on certain jumps, but over time she worked on it &, for the most part, has solid technique now. It’s only when things start really going downhill those old habits creep back in. Even that doesn’t happen as often as it did even a couple of years ago. She keeps on fighting, even when she knows the odds are next to impossible, Liza still keeps fighting & I respect that. I also know this was her last chance to make an Olympic Team more than likely, which is beyond a shame, as well as sad. I hope she comes & skates in Stars on Ice here in Canada one of these days. @@ChienaAvtzon I have been seeing Medvedeva acting in a Russian tv show and attending some entertaining shows recently, where she seemed to have fun. From that I assumed she is enjoying her retirement from skating. And from what I've seen there her and Alina Zagitova are good friends)

Anna has the better scoring quad jump that Trusova rarely lands but jumps fewer quads overall... however she is also closer to Kostornaia in terms of presentation so on a good day Anna can crush both of them but only if she perfectly lands her jumps.

Interesting comments. IMO , Tori has nailed it well. IMHO, Zhenya (Medvedeva) has had her day. Aggravated old injuries (and maybe new ones) will keep her off the team. Her move to Orser to learn quads with a mature body late in her career has cost her. Zhenya knew that she would need quads to up her competitive game with the new level brought on by Javie and Yuzuru. So she went to the source, but too late. Could it be that Eteri recognized that it was too late for Zhenya to acquire these skills? It’s been Eteri’s epiphany and MO to train these skills to preadolescents when their bodies are more trainable and made of ‘rubber’. These are elements best learned with young, resilient, small, thin, light bodies with developing quick twitch muscle response, when muscle memory can be trained with less penalty. Zhenya has entered her Katerina Witt period where she will be adored for the greatness she achieved in her relatively short peak, but her podium days are passed. In any case, no quads or 3A in her quiver, and lost flexibility due to the wages of age will keep her out of the running, even if healthy. Tuktamysheva had one last grab at the brass ring at Rostelcom. I was very happy for her ‘phoenix’ showing. With Anna absent, and the 3 Team Tut 14 year olds ineligible, it was likely her last chance for a last hurrah, and she held it together. It was heart warming to watch. She has no consistent big jumps to land, only triple combos. Still a beautiful skater when she can hold it together for a whole program, but that’s been not very often for the last long while. I personally think that Kosternaia and Trusova are suffering with Plushenko as the hot head tries to learn how to coach. His attitude and temper has always been his worst flaw in competition, and it won’t help his new endeavor. Thumbs down to you, Evgeni. On paper, Alena and Sasha should have gone 1-2 at Rostelcom, but I think their new affiliation has cost them. Tuktamysheva was the benefactor of the situation. As to those who whine about ‘over scoring’, you don’t understand scoring and complain because your favorites come up short. Scoring is complex, and far from straight forward - judging is composite between specialist judges that each score specific aspects of the programs. If you think that you can keep up with them in real time as one pair of eyes (without the instant review tech that they use), you’re fooling yourself. Download the ISU handbook and humble yourself. High risk jumps aren’t all there is, and the scoring for these is pretty well codified and risk is rewarded. Transitions, spins, step sequences, and artful presentation add up too. Anna’s big FS score at the Nationals was a function of two landed quads, trademark spins, and no ‘dead time’ skating between elements. Ditto for Kamila after the first three jumps (which suited her Bolero program perfectly). The sport has moved on.

I think it comes down to technique. Shizuka Arakawa (first Japanese FS Olympic gold medalist) can still jump triples and triple-double combos in ice shows. She's FORTY YEARS OLD. Other Russian coaches have also successfully coached adult FS skaters. Eteri's camp not only has bad technique they also rely on repetition and low body weight making injuries more likely. Iirc one of her students, a 15 year old girl, literally shattered her hips during a comp practice. It's insane.

Because state funding for extracurricular activities combined with rigorous selection on body type for sports/arts like figure skating, ballet and rhythmical gymnastics are still in place today since Soviet times. They make sure that they can train the right type of children to succeed in certain types of sports pretty easily. The hands-on delegated expertise of the past 5-6 decades or so by many coaches to their pupils (esp. in ballet tho that is) also plays a role.

Abuse it’s so obvious

in the end, no one forces them to stay in the sport. The weak go away, the strong remain. This is natural. If figure skating is an easy hobby for a girl, she will leave and there will be no results, if figure skating is the meaning of life, she will do everything to win.

Ha! You’re probably a fan of Dance of the Hours in Fantasia. Hippos doing ballet and all. 😂 It’s simple physics. Moment of inertia. Slender bodies turn faster. Just watch Anna as she tightens her leg position - together - while she is airborne. Her rotation accelerates visibly. Certain sports demand certain physiques. None of these ladies would do well in the NHL, if you catch my drift. If they pay attention to their training, diet, and develop their natural gifts with patience and top coaching/encouragement, they have an opportunity to excel, if their growth genetics doesn’t betray their ambitions. Don’t whine about anorexia. Sure it can happen - like with Lipnitzkaya, but she had psych issues under pressure as well. Baiul had a drinking problem. These are individual personal problems. Zhenya isn’t anorexic, nor is she too old. She’s just banged up from all her time on the ice, and her body has matured in a way that isn’t going to be conducive to racking up scores with quads. It happens, it’s a tough demanding sport. And the CV-19 residuals may not allow her full recovery. That’s sad, but it’s not anyone’s fault. Yuzuru is flirting with that banged up condition too, but he’s blessed with that slender, wiry, fast twitch musculature and he might make it to a third Games gold it he tends to business, watches his diet, and woodsheds to hone the last bit of his potential. And that seems to be what he’s doing. At the Japan Nationals, no black circles under his eyes, great verticality and axial alignment on his rotations, terrific choreography as always - he’s never looked so healthy and together at the same time. He’s got a hell of an incentive with Nathan blossoming to challenge him as he has. It’s an exciting time for the sport. It’s now a young person’s sport. That’s not Eteri’s fault. She’s only facilitated the skaters development and achievements in a more efficient and timely manner. Now there’s 12 year olds doing quads, and they don’t all skate for her. She was just the first one to figure it out - that preadolescent girls could do it earlier, easier than anyone else. And I agree with the comment about Daniil’s choreography being revelatory. That he develops programs to accentuate and work to the individual talents of the skaters he designs for is exemplary. To watch Kamila immediately followed by Anna at the Russian Nationals, how different and beautiful could two programs be. Bookend those skates with Maiia’s and Daria’s - that’s a lot of variety. Kudos to Daniil. And I agree with the comments regarding Alena and Sasha and their training challenges. Personally, I wish anyone but Evgeni was training them. He’s not a good influence psychologically, and his coaching abilities are a big ? mark. I hope all of you enjoyed the Russian Nationals. Those skates at the end, Sasha’s included, were skating history.

@@evgenemayer5623 Apparently the Russian Anti-Doping agency RUSADA hadn’t released the results until Feb. 8th and suspended her from competing. The press was just reporting developments as they were unfolding.

there is no child abuse on the part of the coaching staff. just watch their everyday videos, they are all friendly with each other and their coaches are pretty cute, although everyone seems like they are a fiend from hell. The only child abuse was on the part of the IOC, who thought it would be cool to accuse the athlete of doping and put pressure on her with responsibility.

My real concern is with Eteri's liquid diet and the overall nutritional component of what it takes to execute quads and triples. A person needs strength and power to execute as well as great muscle tone. Those girls look like anorexics.

I feel like Brian coaches his athletes for a longer lasting career while eteri just suck the life out of her athletes until there's nothing left after they hit the eteri expiration date

​@@wickedwitch7456 brian orser had coached yuna kim for 3 years, from 16 to 19 yo (she left him in 2010 with a scandal, yuna mom was calling brian a liar etc). 3 years is "a long career" now? orser had never coached an adult lady to success, all his abilities in that department is making loud statements and insulting more succesful coaches. i'm not an eteri fan, but she proved that brian orser is incompetent in ladies figure skating. by guiding tursynbaeva to worlds silver medal (btw at the time elizabeth was a couple months older than yuna, when yuna left orser). the best result that tursynbaeva had with brian is 9th place at worlds. eteri brought her from 13th place at the olympics (under orser) to 2nd place at worlds, just in a year. that's also unlike anything that orser have ever done, skaters that winning under brian were already winning with their previous coaches (yuna kim was already a junior world champion, when she came to orser). and you can't compare men's figure skating to ladies, there's different physiology. morisi kvitelashvili is 26 yo, and his career is lasting like forever with eteri. brian orser can't train adult ladies to success. that's a fact. but he is trash talking like he's an expert on long lasting ladies careers, like he is mishin or something.

@@alexanderbakulin8836 sorry but i wrote that when my only knowledge about eteri is through this video, so now, I've changed my mind about her. Although i still don't like her, she truly is one heck of a coach. And aslo, maybe Brian's coaching does not work well with ladies just like etiri can't really work with men, but that just my amateur opinion.

I totally get that but it's very heartbreaking that this petty drama between adults results in dozens of young girls with broken bodies and minds who end up retiring and not growing to full potential

It doesn't seem dead in Japan to me, we're seeing talented ladies coming from South Korea also. I like Russian Figure Skating but more for Mishin skaters, Moskvina in pairs, coaches that have brought a more organic friendly approach, and they keep certain traditions of Russian skating alive, but also very successful coaches and brought multiple skaters to Olympic and World medals. Even Tarasova had her Eteri moment but she was way more iconic. (and successful across multiple disciplines, not just ladies)

@@simtopia2334 I guess it is a matter of choice and personal preferences. I like what is going on now because it is exciting than let's say in 2007 when there was basically no decent women skaters in Russia and the team arely made it to the Europeans.
