I've been a serious photography hobbyist for about 25 years now. Portraiture is one area of photography that I am not very good at, so it's always interesting to observe the process of someone who's comfortable and proficient at it. :) The technical side I'm pretty comfortable with... soft vs hard lighting, the problems with mottled light (like coming through trees) and the "hot spots" you get, getting a nice catchlight in the eyes, etc., but when doing portraits, knowing how to pose your model for the best "look", and perhaps more importantly, how to effectively communicate to the model what you want them to do, is something that I'm just not very good at, despite participating in several workshops by camera club members who do a lot of portraiture. Those of you who do it well make it look so easy, and in my experience, it's not. Good job!
