A Very Merry Meridian

3 жыл бұрын

One of our most requested videos was for a behind the scenes (BTS) walk through on how to run our synchronized Christmas light show so here is a behind the scenes look at all the elements, props, controllers and lights that make up our Christmas light display. All timestamps of topics are below if you want to jump around. Hope this helps you get started in this awesome hobby of ours or gives some more ideas on how to do things! We do not claim to be experts, just a couple people who like Christmas lights and hoping our hobby brings happiness to others each year. I can help answer questions or post more information as needed. Hope you enjoy!
We posted an awesome Diagram showing how everything works together on our FB page:

I started my show last year with just a mega tree / 36" star. This year added 5 mini trees / stars, 7 arches and 5 Gilbert B Flakes on the house. Next year will be the full house. I would recommend looking into the 12 volt HP server power supplies for your show (ebay). I use them exclusively and you can buy a single 115V input - 12V output @ 900 watts supply for about $30. Best long term - zero issue - high output power supply out there. Cheers and keep up the great work!

Yes I’m running 3 . 20 foot lengths. Because I have a 45 foot tree so I need to get to where the lights are. But instead of using their 22 gauge wire. I have chance it to 16 gauge which when I put it on the meter it iworks great. But I was wondering if there’s another way around having to do that. But I do have to have 3 20ft Extensions. All because of location of the controller.

Are you happy with the 3" spacing on your garage matrix? 3" would definitely be a lot more affordable, but I know a lot of people go with closer spacing for more density.
@AVeryMerryMeridian
@AVeryMerryMeridian 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what your "goal" is for the matrix and your audience viewing distance . We do lots of whole house effects and so it matches the spacing I have elsewhere for the most part so I think it blends together nicely in the display unlike when I see a p5 trying to do full house effects with the pixels it just does not blend well in my opinion. If I had to do it again I would at least do 2 inches for more resolution for video clips and pictures but the fact that my audience is 70 feet away viewing most of the time I can get away with big bold images so just more particular on what I put on it.

One more thing since you’re using low-voltage I’m sure you’ve heard of voltage drop. Being that they use such a tiny gauge wire this is where my issue is . That is the reason why I have to go to 16 gauge wire. But it be great if you knew of another way I could do this . I’ve heard of power injection but I’m just skeptical on it.thank you

@AVeryMerryMeridian
@AVeryMerryMeridian 2 жыл бұрын
They are not the most user friendly IF you know better. Once you have a Falcon or Kulp you would never go back as they are so much easier to work with remotely if changes are needed on your layout etc where a hard reset would be needed. We are still using them as we have them but once they die or if we need more output we upgrade as you can run more pixels per port on Falcon compared to the Alphapix. If there is nothing else you can find you can make Alphapix work as that is what we started with our first couple years too

Where is the best place to start? Looking to start building a show for next year but don’t want to over shoot my newbie brain and end quitting before I even get started out of frustration (I tend to jump all in and take on more than I can handle). So what’s your thought on a good safe couple of props to begin with and then build on?
@AVeryMerryMeridian

I know the feeling! I would say most people should start with their eaves, windows, and/or house outlines. That will set a good baseline for whatever you want to grow with moving forward. Do you leave all of your c clamps installed all year or do you take them out at the end of the season? Also I noticed you zip strapped you trim string to PVC, is this working ok for you? Because I want to do this solution for our display but would rather drill and install from behind like Doug from Inspire Lights displays however don't have a drill press to make all of those holes.
@AVeryMerryMeridian
@AVeryMerryMeridian 3 жыл бұрын
I kept them up all year this last year and only had to replace like 10 of them with new ones this year as some do fail. We live in UT so does not get as hot as other climates so think that helps a bit from the UV some other people have issues with more failing. Yeah the PVC is white and we keep it up year long and because the strip are pointed towards the house they are decently protected from UV as well. Might redo it all this year with some type of J channel to hide the strip even better and make it look super clean but will see :)

@@AVeryMerryMeridian I still trying to decide if I want permanent lighting and use the permatrack from rgb-man because if I do that the trim effect will be under the eaves like your effect, which is cool but I was thinking to mount using shingle clips on the edge of the roof so I can face the pixels directly to the audience. We are in Colorado so I too think we shouldn't have too much issue with clip failure. Are you using 3d printed or a manufactured product?

No worries about the questions at all man! 70 peace stakes together...all 12v and 7 light pixels on each. The left side of the yard I have 20 and the right side are 50.
