In this episode, I continue my review on the Behringer ADA8200. I go more in-depth on how to connect it and how to configure it. And I have a correction to make about the connectivity from my previous unboxing/review: the analog outputs on the back are NOT pass-through from the front panel. Instead, they work with the ADAT input to convert from an interface to analog outputs. This is in conjunction with the ADAT output, which converts the analog inputs and sends them to an interface.

Glad my comments helped you out. Normally, selecting ADAT sync as slave, you would not require the BNC lead for WORD clock. ADAT out from RME to ADAT in of ADA8200 will already have a clock signal. WORD clock sync is used when more than 1 slave devices need syncing, so that One master WORD clock out to multiple slave WORD clock in. Hope that helps.

I don’t know if someone else has already made this comment, but it is possible to flow the ins on the ADA8200 straight to the outs on the back. You just have to connect the same optical cable to both the in and the out on the ADA8200. This will send out and then back in (which is, admittedly, strange) and then out the outs on the back. Just did this today. Not sure this is of any use for recording, but I like to use my unit sometimes as a pass-through to a live mixer for practice with the band and sometimes as an interface for recording. Works great for this.

That is interesting I have an Apollo twin duo and purchased this to increase my input count to 10 are you saying I can take advantage of the 8 outputs as well? Because just connecting the Apollo via optical and the 8200 I only seem to have access to the extra input via UAs digital mixer called Console 2

Not sure, but I wouldn’t expect you to be able to use the outs unless you connected them up with a second optical cable. Not really sure, though!

pretty sure you don't need word clock from the master interface when you are using TOSlink Optical sync. That would be used for expanding interfaces when TOSlink is exhausted on your master interface but still need to sync other gear.

The ADA8200 is basically an add-on for an existing audio interface. So it won't be able to serve as a way to use an ADAT interface that has no connectivity to your computer. You'll need an interface that connects to your computer via USB and has ADAT inputs/outputs to use the ADA8200.

About the IN / OUT thing: *Yes, you can use it as a standalone preamp* . The standard routing for this thing is: Channel IN - ADAT Out ADAT In - Channel OUT So in theory, you can just patch de Adat Out with the Adat In with an Adat cable and the signal should flow from the analog ins to the analog outs. I haven't tried it because I don't have one, but in theory it should work.

@@carrott0pgaming844 yes, but this way you will only be sending the clock from the Behringer, as the Adat Out of your second preamp will only carry 8 audio channels, which will be the ones integrated on it.

What studio9 said is correct. In addition to get a perfect wordclock connection, in this example, the end @ ADA8200 should be terminated with a bnc-T and a resistor. But i think he is using the adat-connection to sync. I had good results with cabeling bnc wordclock "inline" up to 3 Units (Termination @ the end). More Units should be synced by a Masterclock-Unit.

Hello there! Thanks for the video! A quick question. DId you notice some latency using ADA8200 as a patch? Thank you in advance! Ste
@YHRS
@YHRS 7 жыл бұрын
The only time I notice any latency is when I plug its digital input directly into its digital output and use the unit as an analog "pass through". The extra AD and DA conversion adds a slight amount of latency. But in normal everyday use as an expansion for my interface, I don't notice any latency on top of what the interface already incurs (about 3ms in and 3ms out).

I recently connected my Ultragain ADA8200 to my Audient iD14 interface. Because I had no ADAT cables, I resorted to connecting the channel One analogue output to the analogue input of my interface ( the Audient ). I had my mic connected to the Channel One input of the Behringer . The signal from my mic went right through theADA8200 and into the Audient, no problem. Do you mean to say analogue outputs do not work if the ADAT output is already in use?

As far as I understand it, if there are timing issues over ADAT, it would result in pops/clicks/dropouts in your audio. If you're not experiencing any of these issues then I think that you're in good shape and the clock sync is working.

You can actually plug a TosLink cable from the ADAT input to the ADAT output, and it'll pass a signal from the preamp through to the analog output on the back. I learned that after I made this video.

UPS came today and delivered mine and I just found out the same thing that it wont pass through which makes it completely useless for me. In fact I am having a hard time to realize whats the use for it. I did not watch your earlier upload I just stumbled over your channel more or less by accident so Im not blaming you or anything just wanna say thanks for clarifying it lol. I had big plans for this unit in the setup I am working on at the moment for multiple individual headphone mixes and routing channels to external gear and so forth. Was thinking maybe you could loop the toslink from in to out but that probably wont work and since inputs could be either mic or line that could be a problem too I guess. I got all the soundcards I need and a bunch of computers, mixers and stuff so I just needed the preamps. Oh well I will send it back
@YHRS
@YHRS 7 жыл бұрын
You definitely can loop the ADAT out to the ADAT in with a TOSLink cable, and another TOSLink cable to link the ADAT in to the ADAT out. It'll pass the audio from the front panel inputs to the back panel outputs. There's a slight cost in latency in doing so, but it's not enough to cause problems. Just a little phase issues if you're using that alongside integrated preamps in an interface.
@BurninSven1
@BurninSven1 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, I just tried it and it works. Hopefully you can adjust the latency in your daw if its to bad. Thinking about it the same amount of latency should occur even used the way it´s supoused to be used and hooked up. I mean first you have a short delay in ad converters going out of it through the adat out and the you get a short delay in your soundcard and then inside the computer and then from the comp out to the soundcard and in to the adat in on the ada8200 to the ad converter and out on the backside outputs. Let me see now if I got the chain right, yes I think I did. But that will show in time I guess, still it seems to be a supercool piece of hardware. In reality it turned out to be a very useful and flexible thing and specially for the price you pay for it. So I was dead wrong thinking it was useless lol.

There is only one difference with your setup that I have only one Toslink / Optical cable plugged like [Out] ADA8200 -> [IN] Apogee. I thought that the [IN] ADA8200 slot to connect another ADA8200 to get 8/8 more channels. In the manual of Behringer says you don't need to have 2 optical cables to use all the in and outputs. I confused and ordered another Toslink / Optic cable again :) Let's see.

I use my ADA8200 every day, and I really like it. The preamps and converters can't quite compete with RME's Hammerfall converters and pristine preamps, but they're not bad by any means. I run my gaming computer's audio through a pair of line inputs on the ADA8200, so I listen to a lot of KZfaq, Media Player, and games through them every day and I think they're great. The Midas preamps are terrific for the money. They have a little less headroom than the RME preamps, so they'll start distorting as you push them hard. But I haven't had any need to push them hard, so no problem there.

On this unit, forgive me if this is a dumb question, but are the inputs and outputs mono signals? I’m trying see if I can run a hybrid setup with my line 6 helix 6 rack. I want to do some sort of reamping, but I don’t know enough about cables to know wether or not I can use both ts or trs cables to make this work or if I need to stick with one or the other. I’m looking at buying the two notes torpedo reload to snag my amps output (signal: guitar, line 6 helix rack, DIoutput from helix to Bugera TRIREC, TRIREC to two notes torpedo, torpedos line out to go into line 6 helix send/return) so I can basically make my physical rig into a “block” that is the send/return I send the torpedo into which I can then throw an IR on in the helix rack, the helix being controlled via USB to send my DAWs recorded DI signals to the helix to complete the loop to make a hybrid reamp setup. My question may not be directly related to the Behring we product specifically but with ts and trs cables with xlr-m and xlr-f ends. How can I know what cable to use and when? I understand that one is balanced and the other is unbalanced, but does that mean one is stereo and the other is mono? Or are they all mono? Apologies in advance for my long winded comment. 🤘🏼
@YHRS
@YHRS 2 жыл бұрын
Typically, only the headphone outputs are a stereo signal sent over a single cable. Everything else is individual mono inputs/outputs (at least anything I can think of off the top of my head at the moment). So any stereo signal would require a use of 2 channels: one for the left signal, one for the right signal.

There might be some debris or something in there, although checking would be easier said than done, with the little hinged door in the way.

I've got a question: At 13:25 you are talking about the output configuration of the channels and how easy you can set them. I'm just trying the same but Ableton there's nothing to configure, just switching on/off the channels. Output 9 & 10 is S/PDIF, so the analog outs are 11-18! This setting is confusing when you route them to a mixer with 16 channels. Do somebody know a way to kick out that pre-configured S/PDIF 9 /10??? Thanks for support :-)

When using Hardware inserts remember to hit the ping detect on your i/o plugin in your DAW so the latency compensation can be calibrated by the DAW and tracks don't fall out of the grid. In Reaper it's the plugin being used here REAinsert just remember to hit the ping on your i/o plugin when using hardware inserts to everything stays in it's original place and time due to the roundtrip latency. If your buffer is set to 512 then there will be a difference of of 512 samples on playback so if you ping the DAW can adjust for this and keep everything in it's place just as it would when you use plugins. Have a great day.

Yes, the outputs are 8 discrete channels. So you can send signal to each of them from your DAW. That'd be a good fit for a summing mixer.

This is an ADAT preamp, intended to be used with an audio interface that has ADAT in and out connectivity. But it could work with your mixer if you feed the ADA8200's ADAT input to its own ADAT output, which will pass through signal from the front preamps to the back outputs. Then you'd run XLR-TRS cables from the outputs to *line* inputs on your mixer.

It can connect 8 XLR outputs from the back to anything that'll accept a line-level signal. So you could plug those into 8 line inputs on an audio interface. Just connect the ADAT input to the ADAT output, and it becomes a pass-thru from the preamps on the front to the line outputs on the back.

If undoing and redoing connections is a problem, you might take a look at a patchbay. That can make it much easier to "set and forget" the cables behind your setup. And if you need to change the routing, it's quick and easy with patch cables on the front of the patchbay.

Very good video!!! I have one question about connectivity. I' m a previous owner of a DDX 3216 digital mixer, but after having some problems with its screen, I' m thinking of replacing with an ADA8200! I have a RME Digiface that has a phones output that I'm using for Control Room headphones, a POWERPLAY PRO XL (4-Channel Headphone Distribution Amp) for recording room headphones. On DDX3216 I had plenty of alternative connections... Where do I have to connect the POWERPLAY and my studio monitors on ADA8200?? Thank you!
@YHRS
@YHRS 6 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! You'd plug your monitors into a pair of line outputs on the back of the ADA8200, and I'm assuming that the Digiface comes with TotalMix software. In TotalMix you'd designate a pair of outputs as "Main" outs. As for the PowerPlay, I'm not 100% sure since I've never played around with a headphone distribution amp. I'm sure that between TotalMix, the ADA8200 and the Digiface, you could find a way to get a couple of different cue mixes output from various pairs of outs on the Behri and feed those into the PowerPlay so everybody gets a "more me" mix. Well, I guess you'd get 3 individual mixes and a main out (that's 4 pairs of outputs altogether).

I think that's a great choice! I'm still enjoying my ADA8200 attached to my FireFace UCX after all these years. My idea, is to link a m-audio profire 2626 to a pair of ada8000s and use the 24 outputs to send each individual track to its corresponding track on my analog mixer. My idea overall is to be able to mix my tracks (at the very least, faders, panning, and light EQ) on the mixer and mix it down to a stereo master. My question, is: Is this at least possible? and if so am I doing it the best for the budget.
@YHRS

I think that should work. The only concern that I'd have is about the ProFire. It's an older unit, and I'd bet that M-Audio isn't still updating drivers for it. So there's a chance that Windows and Macs will eventually become incompatible with it (if that hasn't already happened).

Cool stuff! Unfortunately, I'm struggling to get a return signal at all with Studio One. Using a Babyface Pro, the ADA8200, and a ART VLA II compressor. VLA II works fine as an insert with other preamps so I don't think that's the problem... Current routing: ADA 8200 line OUT to compressor IN, compressor line OUT to ADA8200 IN, correct? ADA8200 is "NOT" hooked up with your UCX via patchbay cables, right?? Connection should be only thru Toslink cables I believe(?) Downloaded Reaper to evaluate and recreate your steps but I still have the same issue... just can't figure it out... Do you have any special routing going on in TotalMix? Thanks for your time!
@YHRS

In TotalMix, when you click on one of the hardware outputs, make sure that the associated software playback output fader is up. For instance, when I click on the AN 3 hardware output (bottom row), I make sure that the AN 3 software playback (middle row) fader is all the way up at 0dB. That definitely has thrown me for a loop more than once!

The idea of passing signal from the input directly to the outputs to another interface doesnt sound that crazy if it there is a way to configure it from the computer, but it do is unpractical, maybe a bit noisy and with some delay for live monitoring, the main reason for getting the Behringer is to get extra inputs, outputs and it is converter AD/DA, for the prize is good

Nice video. I am more of an old school engineer so I have a question. I am wondering if what you're conveying in this video is that this Behringer unit is useful if you want to send an audio signal from your DAW into a piece of outboard gear and then returning the audio signal back into the DAW. Similar to what you could do in the analog world using the inserts on a console for say a compressor, a gate or other gear. I have a lot of vintage outboard gear (as well as an analog console) and when I get DAW (soon I hope) I would like to have the ability to still use my outboard gear. Looking for the best way to do that. I would like the ability also to use the mic pre's and EQ (from the console) if recording a rhythm section all at one time, for instance. Thanks and well done video. Gave you a sub. Phil

@@uptownphotography I've looked high and low for a simple AD/DA that has only line inputs and outputs on it, and there aren't a whole lot of them selling new nowadays. Most of what I can find have preamps and not just line inputs, which drives up the cost. There's the ART TubeOpto, Focusrite Clarett OctoPre, Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre, Midas XL48. For way more money you can look at the options from RME and Lynx. There are also some older and more affordable devices on the used market that I've looked at, like the Frontier Designs Tango 24, Marian Adcon, and one whose name escapes me...I'll edit this comment if I can remember what that thing was called... I've been eyeing the Ferrofish Pulse 16, which takes 2xADAT and converts them to 16 line inputs and 16 line outputs, but my current interface has 2xADAT I/O so I can take advantage of all 16 channels.

Thanks a lot for your quick answer take your time to reply with the tests I know how long it can take when you shift to a new place. Also please try to answer or do some others tests to reply to the following 2 questions as well: Question 1 : As you do a cross link between the ADAT IN / OUT do you get any audible delay. I’ll precise my question: Let’s say I plug in 8 analog inputs (From drums) to the front panel of the ADA8200. Then they will be converted to Digital (let’s say at 24 bit / 48 KHz). I think as per the specifications this process will take more or less 0.55 ms. These will be sent through ADAT to my RME interface (UFX). Then I’ll use “Totalmix software” to route these 8 signals (Drums) to the Corresponding ADAT OUT of the RME. These in turns will be sent to the ADAT in of the ADA 8200. Now at this step I’m able to plug in a PA system, compressor, external mixer or whatever to pick back the drums sound from the analog outputs of the ADA8200. My question is during this entire process with an internal routing, do you feel an audible latency ? Question 2 : If I need to add 2 ADA8200, do you think there is way to duplicate the signal coming from the RME Interface (like a multi BNC plug) ? Thanks again a keep uploading videos, you are really doing a great stuff my friend
