How to expand your interface cheap With the Behringer ADA8200

in this video we show how we took our focusrite scarlett 18I20 from 8 inputs to 16 with a low price ADAT audio interface ... The Behringer ADA8200 may be cheap and overlooked by many but it is way underrated... The preamps are Midas Design and have a low noise to gain ratio and 48V phantom power on all 8 inputs... The Behringer ADA8200 is defiantly worth looking at if your in the market for a ADAT expansion IT WONT LET YOU DOWN in price or sound quality

Just got a Behringer ADA8200 for my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 and it works great for adding another 8 inputs optically. Quality sound at an affordable price.

How are your settings for setting up the scarlett with the ada8200? I have an issue, where the word clock is not locked. Maybe you can help me. The sample rates are the same and a have an optical cable from OUT Behringer to IN Scarlett.
@Subtronik
@Subtronik 7 ай бұрын
@@MoriSchmoriI set the slave/master switch on the back of the ADA8200 to ‘master - 48.0 kHz’ and set the Scarlett’s sync to ‘ADAT - 48kHz’. It might take a few tries to get it to lock in, but I assure you this works. The only problem I’ve noticed is when I have the Scarlett (1st Gen) Mixcontrol app opened on screen, there’s an audible clicking noise but it goes away as soon as I close the Mixcontrol app.

I'd recommend also using the Word Clock connection (from the primary interface to the secondary preamp interface) when connecting two digital interfaces together via ADAT. This will ensure better sound quality (less potential for Jitter and other negative digital audio artifacts) It will make sure both devices are fully in sync with each other.
@Zachfitz33
@Zachfitz33 4 жыл бұрын
yes crucial point! especially for sync, before I got the bnc cable, my drums were completely out of sync, and there was no way I could make them perfectly in time in editing! so id definitely reccomend the word clock bnc cable with dual adat!

How do you use your word clock on the interface? What cables do you need?
@Kilzu1
@Kilzu1 9 ай бұрын
@@disconnectmusic101 You need BNC cable and possibly also BNC adapter, you have to read your interface manual about it. ADAT is just fine, as long as you are using clock speed, which allows using all 8 digital outputs of Behringer ADA8200 at the same time (so either 41 or 48Khz. You can't use all 8 outputs or inputs on ADAT at higher than 48Khz clock speeds, that's why focusrite 18i20 has 3 adat inputs and outputs, 1 for 8 channels and 2 for 4 channels)
@disconnectmusic101

@@Kilzu1 This work with any interface, long has optical in, connecting to second interface with optical out.
@Kilzu1
@Kilzu1 9 ай бұрын
@@disconnectmusic101 I never said it doesn't work with adat (which is optical input and output, or actually either S/PDIF or ADAT. S/PDIF being 2 channels using RCA or TOSLINK and ADAT being 8 channels using TOSLINK cable). Just because your interface has ADAT, doesn't mean it's always 8 channels. Scarlet 18i20 (18 inputs 20 outputs) has 2 ADAT inputs and outputs, 1 S/PDIF input and output, 8 analog inputs and 10 analog outputs. (cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-7exlzlf13h/images/stencil/2000w/products/282/455/Scarlett-18i20-rear-2400x2400__12553.1685463638.jpg?c=1) Most interfaces that support ADAT at higher than 48Khz clock speed, split the channels like in the picture, you still get 8 channels, it's just split into 4 channels per each input and output, if you set clock speed above certain rate.

Behringer is actually a parent company of Bugera, but not of some of the other Music Tribe Inc. umbrella companies, which include Midas, Turbosound, Klark Teknik, Lab Gruppen, and Coolsound. Music Tribe inc is the conglomeration of all companies that have come under the ownership of the board of directors along with founder, Uli Behringer. Bugera is actually the revived an renamed brand of long defunct branch of Behringer amplifiers and the two are essentially like Toyota and Lexus, Honda and Acura, etc. Bugera uses all behringer tech and resources to build inexpensive but (im sure people would turn their noses up) pretty decent quality tube and tube hybrid amps and matching speaker cabinets. Bugera's initial non-infinium series guitar heads suffered from qc issues and gained a reputation for being prone to failing somewhere in the power section due to bad wiring/bad power tubes/other random qc issues. They still made decent amps overall, and now that they have completely revamped the entire amp line up to include the self diagnosing infinium tube biasing, they have become far better known for being just as reliable as the well known brands, albeit with stigmas that musicians hate letting go of(a stigma in and of itself that i hate about musicians, haha). The founder of Behringer is the head of Music Tribe corp with is his amalgamation of the companies that he has acquired over the decades, but they are not all dependent on behringer or begringer on them, but Behringer was the initial and original foray into the music world by Uli Behringer and Bugera is a "high end" spawn of Behringer Music.

Nice video and great info. Question: I have more of a old school setup using a 32 channel Allen Heath Mixer and an Alesis HD24XR 24 track stand alone recorder. (This is the model with the higher specs on the AD/DA convertors.) I have a lot of vintage outboard gear as well. I was told (years ago) that I could use the Alesis recorder as an interface to a DAW by running the mixer channel direct outputs into the Alesis unit (via the TRS connectors) and interface the Alesis Lightpipe outputs with my DAW of choice. The Alesis could be used again for the returns to the console via the same method using the Lightpipe inputs. In other words, I would NOT record using the Alesis unit, but only use it for the convertors to and from the DAW. My question: Assuming this is all true. Is there a way to interface/convert the 24 channels of Alesis Lightpipe to interface with a DAW. The AD/DA convertors on the Alesis sound really great and I was told when talking with an Alesis tech years ago that the XR model convertors were actually made by Apogee. He further alluded they were not allowed (by contract) to release that info at the time on who made the AD/DA convertors (Again according to Alesis). There's no way to confirm what he told me, but the Alesis HD24XR was then out of production for quite a few years and there would be no reason for him to try and sell me on a unit I already owned anyway. So, at least in theory sound's like he may have spoken the truth. Thanks. Phil

The synths receive midi and the interface receives audio from them - I can see the green leds flash! However there is no audible output! If I connect these synths to the UMC 1820 all is as it should be. Just no audio output when connected via the ADA8200. Latest drivers installed in the UMC1820. I have a feeling it's probably something very simple I'm missing - but it's driving me mad. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks!

Giorgio Roberto Sciattella OK so the ada8200 is just a expansion ... You need a Audio interface that works with your system and that also as a adat input/to output and the Adams 8200 will work .. but the ada8200 is not a interface it has to be ran as a adat through a interface or be ran as a stand alone mic preamp

Hi Guys.. this is an excellent video. I followed all your steps however got stuck at the final leap. I’m using an 18i20 and ADA8200 along with Protools on a Mac. After following the steps, the daw I/O recognised the new optical inputs (the ADATs), both 18i20 and the ada8200 are receiving the mic signals, the meters are working on the interfaces, however there is no feed of the ADAT inputs while recording. It’s blank. The level meters on the daw is also not receiving anything on the ADAT tracks. Please help.

Hello sir, This is Pratik Pradhan, a sound engineer from India. I have purchased a Focusrite 18i20 (2nd gen) a year back (Sr. No. V966148004887) With Focusrite control software 2.3.4. Now I am connecting it with my TC Electronic Finalizer Express via (Optical Digital Cable_Toslink), for mastering (Sr. No. 1720028). And I am using with Protools 12, in a Windows 10 Setup. Digital Signal Chain (optical) as follows: Sound card OUT to TC IN, TC OUT to Sound card IN. Now the Problem: When I am connecting TC Electronic via Optical cable with my Focusrite 18i20 ‘NO Audio Signal’ is transferred from Focusrite 18i20 to TC Electronic. Though when I am assigning a channel output to ADAT channels from Protools and Focusrite Software Control is also showing signal on ADAT channels but ‘NO Audio Signal’ in my TC. TC input is in Digital with OPTO selected but, 44.1k and 48k is always blinking, Cannot stabilize it. KINDLY HELP ME OUT. A LOT OF MY PROJECTS IS LEFT FOR MASTERING!! I sincerely appreciate if you provide me with a solution at earliest.

The Sound Studio maybe it's a clock issue try to get a cable and run it from the word clock of the 18i20 to the tc unit and set one as master and the other as slave and see if that works I would use the 18i20 as master and only plug the 18i20 in to the PC via USB and route the tc unit through the 18i20

@@DMHProductionsStudio I am looking into the phantom power claim. It is not unusual to have both types connected. It would make using all channels not possible if you use both mic types. @thomastucker5686
@thomastucker5686 Жыл бұрын
@@DMHProductionsStudio your claim about phantom power is mostly wrong. There are very old ribbon mics that are most likely difficult to come by with built in transformers sensitive to phantom power. Most of us wouldn't know where to find such mics. Be careful of making unsupported claims, I know it was unintentional. However, this is how bad information gets spread. Phantom power does not blow up most mics.

But you’re losing sample rate quality. Other octopre’s do the same thing but you’re wasting the 192khz of the main interface by doing everything at 48 khz
@DMHProductionsStudio
@DMHProductionsStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Do you understand sample rate ? Most human ears can only hear up to 20khz nothing more and at 44.1 khz you record up to 22khz so by going to 96khz your not going to gain anything because 99% of mastering studios will render it down to 44.1 or 48khz
