This is a condensed Melodic Techno track featuring the Behringer Crave on bass. KZfaq tells me that people frequently search for Behringer Crave Bass, so I figured I'd give the people what they want! It's a pretty simple patch. The sawtooth oscillator is patched to external audio so I can blend both waveforms. Keyboard CV is patched to VCF cutoff so the filter opens up with higher notes.
The Behringer Cat plays a brass sound which handles the primary melody for this track. I'm really digging this synth. It was a steal at around $200 US brand new. Here I'm using the two voices in unison with a bit of detune and I think it sounds great!
The Behringer Pro VS Mini handles the pad in this track. Like last video, it's using the Analog Strings factory patch, with some adjustments to fit the track.
The humble Korg Volca Keys is used for a sort of techno stab. When I was writing this track I had planned for something with a really fast envelope on the filter and I figured I'd design a patch for it on the Microfreak with its versatile modulation. But when I got set up to record I just didn't feel like designing a full patch. So the Volca Keys got the job with its unison mode.
As usual, I'm using Baby Audio Magic Switch chorus and Baby Comeback delay plus Native Instruments Raum reverb all over this track. What a fantastic trio of free plugins--they work so well to enhance these analog synths.
Thanks for listening and reading! Subscribe if you've made it this far, and let me know what your favorite synth is in the comments!

Great music, some really great sounds you've programmed. People are so critical of Behringer synths, but they can sound fantastic in the right hands. I've got the Behringer Pro VS Mini too, it's an amazing little synth for the money!

I get why people gripe about the Behringer clones, but I don't feel bad about buying the ones that clone gear that's no longer produced (like the Prophet VS and the Octave Cat). Cloning the Mother 32 is a little questionable, but Moog fans will tell you that the Crave is nothing like the Mother 32, so I'll give that a pass, too. :-)

I really like your sound design in this piece I especially was surprised with the quality of the stabs out of the Volca Keys, and the brass sounds from the Cat. Most demos of the Cat show people using it for weird modulated lead sounds, but it apparently does super well for more "vanilla " synth leads as well

Thanks, Craig! I agree, the Cat is a very capable synth for the basic sounds. I think it has really cool modulation capabilities and people go wild with them, but the thing I find most inspiring about it is the flexible waveform mixing that produces really rich sounds even without much modulation.

As always, your bassline sounds truly massive... I love the melody at 1:01. For my part, my favorite synth remains the Volca Keys for its size / possibilities ratio 😉

Thanks! Maybe the years I spent as a bass player have paid off in subtle ways, or maybe it just means I love to crank the bass up when mixing! 😁 The Volca Keys is really a great, versatile little synth. They really knocked it out of the park with the Keys and the Bass in that first set of Volcas!

Thanks so much! I try hard to write material that features each synth in a way that feels good and then ends before lingering for too long. :)

What drum machine/samples are you using? That kick+clap is really punchy.
@scottnelle
@scottnelle 3 ай бұрын
The drums are loaded in Sitala, a free drum VST for windows from Decomposer. The clap is an 808 clap sample from the default Clean 808 kit. The kick is from Mercurial Tones' Smooth Kicks Volume 2 library. Shoutout to @Alice-Efe -- they're great samples!

Lovely clean sound Scott. Can't go wrong with Behringer at the moment. I bought the Moog DFAM clone (Edge) last week and was amazed at how sturdy it felt for very little money. Unfortunately (for my bank balance) I saw some demos of the new Moog Labyrinth and had to get one so the Edge went back for now but will be getting one again at some point.

I'm excited to see some Labyrinth content from you! I like the Crave a lot. It was an adjustment for me to have only a single voice for sound design, but I've gotten to grips with it. I've avoided watching too much Mother 32 content to resist the temptation to buy the real thing!

Sounds really cool. Are you sending midi to everything from a daw? If so are you somehow getting seperate midi outs into each device?
@scottnelle
@scottnelle 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yup, all midi comes from the DAW. I use (in this case) four separate midi channels to program the data for the four synths. My interface has a single midi output which sends up to 16 midi channels. I run that output into a CME Thru5 midi splitter which has five midi outputs, each of which includes all 16 midi channels. Finally, each synth is configured to listen only to the single channel that I want, so they all receive all 16 channels but they ignore 15 of them and play back only 1. The midi splitter is great because it makes it so much easier to include synths that don't include a midi thru port. And I can recommend the CME Thru5 specifically, which is quite affordable and has been 100% reliable for me.

I really like the Crave! It doesn't do fat detuned oscillator sounds (although you could patch it up with a second synth to get them) but for crisp single oscillator sounds, it's great. I find it very usable in my tracks.

The Behringer Cat isn't often seen around! But what do you add the percussion with?
@scottnelle
@scottnelle 2 ай бұрын
It's definitely not the most popular synth, but I find it really fun! For percussion I usually sequence samples in my DAW, which is what I've done here. Sometimes I use the Circuit Tracks or the Volca Sample 2.
