I feel like this one is really fun! It's sort of a Synthwave Electronica track. I had a blast putting it together. The Behringer Pro VS Mini is a lot of fun to design sounds for. Here, it's a huge shimmery pad sound, enhanced with reverb from Native Instruments Raum and Chorus from Baby Audio Magic Switch.
The pluck sound is from the IK Multimedia Uno Synth. It's a cool analog synth with a pretty simple interface. I think this sound may have been one of the factory patches, but it's also pretty fun to design for.
The bass is from the Arturia Microbrute and I'm shifting the envelope release time and cutoff frequency in order to create some variation between the sustained bass notes and the faster parts. It's fun getting multiple sounds out of a single simple monosynth, but it can be tricky to remember when to make the changes!
Shout out to ‪@CatenationIndustrial‬ for her recently-released Crematory Machinery sample pack, which was sampled in a crematory in Switzerland! I'm using it here to enhance the drum loop with some texture and provide some additional groove. There's lots more to explore in this pack, and I'm looking forward to digging in. Check it out at dissonantwitchcraft.com/
I'm splitting midi from my DAW across the three synths with my trusty CME Thru5 MIDI Splitter, which has been absolutely rock solid for all of these synth demos.
Thanks for listening and reading along!

Cool! I was afraid the Microbrute was very limited in it's use and soundscape, but you showed me it actually fits in nice!

Thanks! It's an interesting synth, for sure. It certainly has a bit of a distinctive sound, but the ability to mix the different waveforms gives it some versatility. I really enjoy finding good sounds with it!

The Pro VS Mini sounds great. Tempted to get a second one.

Agreed! They're so affordable, if you can find one in stock a second one sounds like a great idea.

I remember in the early synthwave revival, back in like mid-late 2000s, before the genre sort of gelled into the tropes it has now, people were a little more experimental with what the "sound" of synthwave was. This has a total throwback vibe to that era I appreciate. Really distinctly retro synth music but less obsessed with copying something exactly. Fantastic as usual

Thanks! I have such trouble with genres for these jams, and sometimes I just default to "Electronica." I decided to add "Synthwave" on this one entirely on the strength of the sound of the Pro VS Mini and the color scheme. 😁 I enjoy what Synthwave has become, but I'm with you: It's fun to experiment within the genre!

Thanks! It's a weird little synth! Every time I try to dial in a sound with it I'm like "what is up with this thing? Who on earth thought it was a good idea to design a synth this way?" and then I get just the right balance of the four waveforms and the brute factor dialed in just right and suddenly it sounds like exactly what I wanted! 😆

haha yes it's true that it doesn't look like any other synth, the brute factor makes it truly unique 😃

Do it! I think it's an awesome sounding synth that's fun to work with and a big reverb really takes it to the next level. The only downside for me is that it has pretty limited space for patches and I like most of the default patches already, so it's hard to choose which ones to replace! Fortunately the Behringer Synthtribe software makes it really easy to back up patches to a computer.

@@scottnelle yeah and for such a small price you can't complain about some 80s goodness. I have a Pro 800 so familiar with the app, good to keep in mind. Thanks dude

So you are programming midi in your computer and sending out to synths? If so, how are you sequencing in the DAW? Are you using an external controller or just mouse and keyboard?
@scottnelle
@scottnelle 3 ай бұрын
Hey Kevin - Yeah, midi is programmed in the computer and sent out from my audio interface to a midi splitter so I can run a cable to each synth. I use a number of different methods to write the midi data because I like experimenting with different writing workflows. I think I used Scaler 2 to generate the chords for this one, because I don't think I would have been able to write a decent chord progression on my own. :-) I also use a bunch of other tools. For hardware I have a couple small midi keyboards, Maschine Micro, and an Arturia Beatstep. For software I have Scaler 2, RandARP, Rhythmizer Ultra, and I often just draw notes directly into the piano roll in the DAW. I find that drawing notes in helps me come up with rhythms that I never would have tried on an instrument. I really enjoy experimenting with different tools to see how they inspire the final outcome!

@@scottnelle wow thanks for the insight. I've tried so hard to stay away from a computer when writing songs because I sit at a computer all day for my dev job. But I'm so frustrated with all of the hardware limitations when composing a complete track that I may just drink the poison and use midi to sequence all of my hardware. Thanks again.

@@kevinaaronson You're welcome! I spend all day at the computer doing a dev job, too. I have two desks in my home office so I at least get to get up and move a few feet before I go into music production. 😅 One of my favorite things is to tinker with all the synths to refine the sounds I'm going to use once I have the midi written. I agree that it's nice to get your eyes off the screen for a while!
