Got my TD-3 and used this video to set mine the same as the TB-303 shown. This invalidates your warranty with Behringer but is a quick and simple task. Remove the 8 screws on the bottom of the TD-3, the base comes away with no wires connected. Find the VCF pot, it's located to the top and left of the 2 blue pots (don't touch those). Turn the VCF pot counter clockwise about a quarter of a turn with a trimmer tool or very small flatblade screwdriver (mine's all the way down as I prefer the sound). Reassemble, you now have something that's as close as you're going get to a TB-303 on your salary. The rules are that having done the adjustment you then have to put a yellow smiley sticker on the box. Those are rules, stop complaining ;)

The thing with this comparison is that it's using knob positions to compare the sound and not by ear (as loopop states at the end to give him credit), after playing with the TD-3 here and hearing the sound of the original if you simply dial back the filter and use ears to match the sound it will be a much more realistic comparison. Let's see the other comparisons that come out in the next months. Cheers Loopop for a nicely done video though.

Thanks and indeed - the first part with knob positions to the max is a boundary test (a higher cutoff isn't necessarily a bad thing BTW...) - full filter range sweeps start at 19:10, though even those are practically impossible to match precisely...

I never had a TB-303. When I got the TD-3 and tested the sequencer for the first time, I thought "omg what kind of shit is this?". But after a few minutes I realized that it's exactly this sequencer that gave Acid its style. No matter how randomly I press the pitch and timing buttons, it always sounds like Acid. I come up with patterns that I'd never come up with if I drew them in a piano roll on a monitor. For 150 bucks the TD-3 is a no brainer, even though I'm a bit sceptical about the longvity of the device. The buttons don't feel like quality too much, I can imagine there will be problems in 2 years or so. We'll see. But right now it's perfect for everyone with the slightest sympathy for Acid who always wanted to play around with a 303 but didn't want to spend a ton of money.

It seems like the main difference is the cutoff on the TD filter is always noticeably brighter. TB, the RE and the XOX all have muddier/warmer sound. I wonder if he were to shift up the cutoff slightly on the tb at which point would it sound like the td. Because if everything is just shifted up slightly on the TD, that's not much of a deal-breaker

Came here knowing this would recharge my behringer/303 love. Got through 22 minutes of a great review and demo, was still excited thinking about when the time will come, that I will become Bassmaster Flex T, wit my own td3. Exactly starting at 22 And getting so fecknasty that i ran home to my mommy. That dangum XoX absolutely SCREAMED it made me let out a cry of genuine astonishment and wonder just cause that part just got so dirty, it made need 2 baths.. Stillll gonna end up grabbing td3 first cause unless the XoX is around 300 (which it prob isn't, I'm just not aware) that at behringer price point I'd rather go ahead and get on 303 acid train of squelchyy blissful groodness.. ✌ and 💘

x0xb0x kits went for about $50-120, pre-built could range from $300-$1000+ All 3 that I've had would distort internally, very lo-fi vs. a real TB-303 and won't deliver similar bass character. Still good to keep one around for upper parts drenched in dirt n delays etc, they can also double-duty as MIDI-to-CV (w/DIN) converter.

Thanks for the review. I am always amazed at how you are able to quickly learn and simply explain the various operating parameters of a device every week. Another vote for adjusting the filter on the TD-03 lower to account for the higher tuning level of it. Once it's demonstrated that the Behringer is much brighter than the OG and RE-303 with filter all the way open, all the following tests become a bit pointless, because it's not a like-for-like comparison of those parameters.
@JesusGreenBL
@JesusGreenBL 4 жыл бұрын
I think at the top end it's fine. All you'd have to do is turn the filter slightly down and you'd be able to match the original. The issue is the low end with the filter all the way closed, doesn't seem to close as much on the TD-3 as the original/RE-303/x0xb0x. As others have said though this might be something that can be fixed. It might also vary from model to model, because I'm sure in one or two of the other demos I heard the filter sounding more closed than this. Still, otherwise it seems bang on, and to me sounds far closer than most of the other clones that cost 2x as much.

They call it a replica, not a clone, because it has exactly the same components. It's so true to the original that you can even apply the same mods to it, like the famous DevilFish.

It's just me, or is the 303 / tb-3 sequencer really inspiring? I'm really happy they decided to stay with it! For complex sequences or other stuff there are plenty of external sequencers that can be integrated via MIDI. Anyway, isn't the 303 about techno and acid? who needs a 303 for playing Mary Had a Little Lamb ?

The TD-3’s sound is clearly inconsistent when compared to the original 303, while the other two come close, though I realize that shifting the knobs might have approached it more similarly as Behringer pointed out below. I’m actually really amazed about the similarity of the Din Sync RE-303, but it comes with a different price tag. I would’ve liked to hear the TT-303 as well in this comparison, but I get you have to draw the line at some point 😏

It’s not just that emulations can sound slightly inaccurate, they often just don’t sound right aesthetically. Roland’s Aira TB-3 is a similar price, possibly more inaccurate that other clones but seems to capture the best and most important qualities of the original TB303. The RE303 is both accurate and sounds great but is a much bigger investment.

I'm with you, the sequencer on the TT is a diamond in the rough, same for the 606 too.. a couple of those with the music1010 blackbox is what I'm using these days. I got over the rounded corners as soon as I was able to mutate my own patterns
