Hey everyone! So someone commented on my IG about calling myself a "minority" and describing it as "my whole life" and I just wanted to clarify since it was cut from the video. I lived abroad in Paraguay during my more formative years and was part of a "minority" group of foreigners since there weren't many foreigners in the country. I recognize my word choice could've been better (jet-lagged brain did me dirty) and also that I pretty much have privilege everywhere I go. Wow Your channel and videos are amazing! I also have white friends staying in Korea. They mentioned one of the bad things which was that the old generations tend to look or stare at them in the streets when passing by. Don't know the intention but for them, it didn't feel pleasant.

Interested thing about being half white and half Korean, most everyone thought I was 100% Korean and almost no one spoke to me in English;even after I said sorry my Korean is bad, I am American. Can you speak English? (Albeit I said it Korean) However, when my aunt (white) visited me over Lunar new year they would often speak English to her or if she said in English to them they would often just look at me and speak Korea.

Thanks to Jerry for having me on, to clarify a lot of what I am saying here is a generalisation and I have no doubt my opinions will change in future. Race is not something in your control so my advice for long-term stay foreigners of non Korean decent is to focus on spending time in the language, communication is your only tool against any discrimination. 90% of the so called 'foreigner problems' are just a language issue. Change yourself before trying to change the world. It can be done. Learn how to exchange ideas, enter the culture and live in KOREA! (using English all day is living in the west). - George

In Korea for 18 years. 90% of the time being white is awesome. My darker skinned foreigner friends have more difficulties. The hardest part is being a magnet for weirdos. We are easy to spot and perceived as safe.....so if a strange person wants to be strange, then we get it.

I thought the guy commenting on the dating scene in Korea, the difference between dating korean women and European, was interesting, and I would have liked him to develop it a bit more. Squid game was the first Korean TV show I watched when it was first put on the world stage through Netflix. I've watched alot more korean content since and I've noticed some trends. They're obsessed with 'America' much in the same way (I think) that Indians seem to be obsessed with all things London/UK. Most people seem to already recognise this. For some reason they always use Hawaii is an ideal destination for luxury travel, what gives?

I love your videos! The questions you ask and the experience from your guests you bring on really capture the general picture of racism in Korea. I appreciate the extra focus you put on their personal stories. They provide valuable insight views about their society since my friend from Vietnam went through a similar experience in Korea. Once, her part-time boss told her she should be paid less because she's Southeast Asian and from a poorer country. It's disheartening, and I genuinely hope that no one else has to go through such situations.

There's a saying in Korea that being white can erase all other flaws. I even had a conversation with a Korean guy who said that if a girl was not his type (overweight for example), he could like her for being blonde and white. I definitely didn't have bad experiences but I had mixed friends that did. Being pale and European is definitely an advantage in Korea. The next best thing is Latin or Arab/Turkish. It's a weird hierarchy

Okay so some people might not fight the "Beauty standard" of South Korea, and all I have to say to that is, so what and who cares? As long as people are not making you feel uncomfortable, for who you are, then it's not a topic that needs to be frequently discussed about. Keep your attitude and demeanor in check, and you're going places, no matter what you look like. Focus on your day-to-day interactions, and not what you hear about from the other perspective. People need to understand/realize that being white can be beneficial to a certain extent or degree (in other cultures). Yes there is often the perception that one may automatically be well off, because of media and what society pushes forth and some individuals still having a very colonized mind-set within the black and brown communities. But in all honesty, if you are over-weight or what not, a Korean’s treatment of one will not be the best since they value people being thin. So if you fall within the category of attractive on a world-wide scale because you are thin (or in shape), your features come together nicely, and etc. Despite your ethnic and racial background you will still be acknowledged and told you are attractive. Trust me (Latina, tan-dark skin chica), with friends in Korea that were black etc. You will have a good time, same applies for traveling in other countries. Looks are looks…

I've met numerous Koreans who've said that they consider people with dark skin subhuman and that this is the general social consensus.

It is a pleasure to see this video as a Korean staying abroad. But I'd like to leave some comments on experiences what they've got in Korea for better understanding of ppl who are not native Koreans. First of all, racism that they talked in this video is more like a lookism, as all female interviewees talked in this video, the beauty standard in this country is about how your skin color is light(white) or not. It gets more stronger when it comes to point of veiws toward females, among Korean females they tend to value someone who has lighter skin color and also males do the same. But for males having light skin color doesn't really matter, cuz some of girls prefer brown or dark skins of men becoz they think it looks more masculine. But in general Korean ppl don't associate skin colors with someone's intellectual abilities or personality. If they treat someone poorly with their streotypes on skin color then that is definitaley a racial discrimination. But as far as I experienced, I've never witnesed that sort ot things in Korea. So their beauty standard is not attiributed to admiration toward white ppl or western society. Just Korean esthetic has been obsessed with the color 'white' but not with the western cultures, for example most of Koreans would not understand the point of tanned skins in western society. Because in Korean history only noble privillaged class was free from physical activities and especially for females from noble class going outside from their own house is something going agianst the morals in the society for 300 years, in addition after being independent Korea was World's poorest country ever, so they kept admiring who are free from hard workloads, the upper class, and white skin was a symbol that demonstrates those females are noble. Hence it is more like a view of beauty that we've beared through the history of our country rather than a mean to discriminate foriegners. And for the British guy, I would say it was just a random under educated old man who does the shit to a random person, but still can not exclude the case he is actually xenophobic. Hook ups in Hong-Dae or other popular hanging out places in Seoul(Capital city) are pretty common and those youngsters do those things someone looks beautiful or "easy" regardless where the person come from. If you are in those situations you can simply avoid them by saying 'I'm in a relationship' in Korean. For the last comment, dating in Korea as a foreigner might be tough or difficult especially if you are seeking Koreans for your date. Koreans tend to be in a close circle only with the people they've known for a long time and they already have their life-long groups from their high schools or even from elementry school. So it is a common challenge for Koreans to have deep relationships with ppl they met after highschool. I assume you gotta try hard to get to know them and get into their circles, I have an Ukranian freind who got married Korean guy but she was really good at speaking Korean and studied and worked with Koreans for several years. But I'd say it is because Koreans are more used to be in their safe zones but not necessarily they want to exclude foreigners from them. Hope your time in Korea be worth a lot.
