In this video, I interview my friend Mathilda about her experience as a transgender woman in Sweden. We compare her experience to that of other transgender people, specifically how her experience may differ from those going through a similar experience in the U.S.
Check out Mathilda on social media.

Our minister of education, Lina Axelsson Kihlblom, is transgender. I just love that it's very rarely mentioned in the media. Not because it should be hidden in any way - and it's not - but because she should be in the news for what she's doing, not for her gender.

That person might be the minister of education that 28% of the population approve because they voted for that specific party. You seem to forget that. Apart from whining all the time about profits that person is quite irrelevant.

@@seyed7380 Who voted for her or not was completely irrelevant to OP's comment, so there's no need for you to bring that up. The point was she's in the media for her job, not her personal life. I’m a 69 year old MF TS living in Albuquerque NM. I started transitioning in my late 30s and first experienced significant rejection by my family, but acceptance years later. I transitioned on the job at the AZ Attorney General’s Office, and faced severe discrimination, which was legal then. Cost is a prohibitive factor. I think the experience can be too fast for those who have the money, because life still goes on, and some mistakenly believe all problems disappear post surgery. I love Sweden and wish I could have transitioned there. Excellent dialogue between you two.

I think a lot of people have an idea about who they are going to meet and that can make it harder for them to enter a relationship with somebody who doesn't live up to their norms. I've seen a person actually reject a relationship for something as stupid as the guy being shorter than them, so it may just be shallow and not exactly transphobic. I'm 52 (and Swedish) and I think that in my age bracket there are a lot of people who are open enough that they are OK if their kids are trans or gay but maybe wouldn't themselves date a trans person.. but 30 years ago they were probably much more transphobic. I personally wouldn't care - if I find someone to be attractive and it's reciprocated then I'm good (until we discover what it's like to live together, but that's a different issue).

Agree. I´m 51yo (52yo this dec) and I think you´re completely right. Maybe we ourselves in this age group wouldn´t date a trans gender (or maybe I would?),, but we sure are very tolerant and supportive to the younger generation who are and to our own kids. I´m proud of that, though! (Jag är svensk, uppvuxen i Sthlm).

Personally, if I found out that my date was trans after having met it would take me back somewhat but I could handle it and go on, it wouldnt really bother me all that much, if Im attracted im attracted. I however still think if you are trans you probably should say that before you meet up with someone for the first time, its simply respectful and also avoids bad surprises. Its the same way that you should tell your date if you have young children or whatever, there is no reason to go on a date, then go home and have the other person find out something about you that they dont want to deal with. It will save both your feelings and time.

Thank you for interviewing Matilda I am a big watcher of her channel and I am transgender myself mail the female many people say that I don’t house but then there are others that say your parents perfectly once I get to say I don’t wear those on the Internet to my KZfaq but I seem to get a lot more positive responses from people to negative responses but I would like to thank you for doing this interview to help spread the word and get people to understand who we are as a person who is transgender and thanking Matilda for actually appearing on his videos I greatly appreciate because I like to see the education about those of us who are transgender out there I have known something was wrong with me ever since I was a child now late in my 50s I am finally transitioning I’ve gotta do so many abusive things to myself into so much abuse my entire life and I have multiple mental disabilities on top being transgender finally starting my journey and I am going to be looking at recently because it’s now going to take two years to get my bottom surgery thanks to covet and I’m going to look at with my doctor about getting an orchiectomy now so that way I can finally some problem with my testosterone blocker problems that I’m having them I’ve had to increase up to 150 mg of the medication to block testosterone I’m going to get the surgery to get rid of those things I hate so much and I’ve been trying to educate people with a lot of my stuff with regard to mental health and me and my transition I started over five years ago with my transition and I still am not able to get my bottom surgery because of my mental health has ended me up in the hospital now I’m perfectly stable and I’m able to get mine but now I find out because of Covid I have to wait two more years frustration Plus I have to get my laser hair removal done too I’m hoping my insurance will cover it because I have you the United States Medicare and Medicaid I invite all of your listeners to research Medicare and Medicaid and you’ll see how difficult it is to be able to afford to get all that we need to be who we normally are and that’s one thing I like about Sweden it is so much more how many other reasons why I like scream I would give anything to move Darren on a permit because United States right now it’s just too much of people stepping on the backs bother to get up top and not even caring about the others that are below we have only two classes of people top one percent of people who are rich and large corporate owners and then we have the bottom class which is everybody else there used to be a middle class but not anymore this country is going downhill and I want to get out of here as quick as I can I’m on with my wife and we would love to live in Sweden because it’s quality of life is so much better there and I’m kind of an introvert myself so I feel I was sitting in Sweden wouldn’t mind living in Gothenburg

Thanks for this video. I spent a few years with the Swedish system for wondering about being trans about 15 years ago when I was young but eventually they said I did not have the diagnosis and I was too scared to transition anyway because I probably wouldn’t be as passable as you being almost 2 meters tall. While I don’t have depression anymore and live a happy life as a man part of me will always wonder. I’m attracted to women and married to a woman and while I play video games as a female character I can’t help that part of me would like to be them even as I am attracted to them. To some extent I think my confusion has to do with not thinking I can really be attractive as a man even if my wife says I am and I’ve had other girls saying that too when I was younger but I never felt it.

I live in Finland; and even though the health care system pays for the surgery, many girls went to private clinics and paid the whole bill from their own pockets. They say that the surgical result is so much more better with those foreign surgeons, but then again, a Finnish surgeon said that they come to her with their complications. The qualifications for the foreign surgeries were also higher as for the health and perhaps age, so it makes comparing surgeons really difficult. American people were either super-hostile or super-friendly. Perhaps part of the American mindset is to be kind to strangers whereas in Nordic countries people think that the state should help everyone and if you are not OK, then you are to blame.

In the U.S... some states are "Informed consent" states, where all you do is sign a paper basically saying "I know what these Hormones will do to me and I'm ready for it." In other states, you need notes from 2 different therapists and an Endochrinologist who's willing to prescribe hormones. Also you can be stuck with the same gender marker for life because of the laws in the state you were born in. Of course that also depends on the state's individual laws.

Like having a physical type even if you are a cis and heterosexual person like me just complicates things, and yet a lot of us do. When it comes to sexuality and emotions it's always way more complicated than one would like it to be.

I am from Sweden, and the first time I heard about a transgender person was probably in around 2004 or so. It was something that was quite new to me, so I was a bit surprised to hear about it, but I also got curious about it. It turned out that it is often something that people decide to have because they feel highly uncomfortable with their birth sex, so it makes a lot of sense to have a transition.

Might be a little late on the discussion, but I just found this video now. I wanted to give my thoughts on the last bit of the video discussing being attracted to trans people. I hope it is not a controversial thing to say, but I don't think anyone has a right to be found attractive by anyone else. I think there is a difference between not wanting to date a trans person vs treating them with respect. I think someone can absolutely be an ally to the trans community and fully support trans people, while simultaneously not being interested in dating someone who is trans. In my opinion, being sexually compatible is an important part of a relationship. And if some person does not feel they are sexually compatible with particular genitals, then I don't see it as transphobic for that person to end the relationship. I think it would be the same in a relationship between two cisgendered people who are not sexually compatible. Of course, there is something to be said about how that discussion takes place. But simply not being interested in somebody due to what genitals they have is not a transphobic thing on its own. Nobody has an obligation to sleep with someone for any reason. As long as the person treats trans people with respect and accepts them for who they are, then I don't think it is inherently transphobic to not be interested in dating them. I'm sure we all have people in our lives who are perfectly lovely people but we have no interest in dating them/sleeping with them. And I'm sure a lot of us have been with someone who we might be initially attracted to, but then they say something or do something or we learn something that makes us no longer attracted to them. Generally speaking, I don't hear criticism of those situations if the person is cis. I don't see why it is any different if they happen to be trans.

I'm just theorizing now, but i have a feeling that, for example, trans women (not all of them) consider themselves being 100% woman when they transition, even tho that's realistically and biologically impossible. In other words, their opinion is that the rest of the world must respect that they're a woman just like every other woman, but "respect" is redefined as "adapting the same mindset" - otherwise its "disrespectful" or/and "transphobic."

19:16 True! Sat in my pub, reading the paper after work. Beautiful young girl was at the far end, obviously a friend of the bartender. The blokes at the bar were nearly breaking their neck. She had legs all the way up to her long hair. She was being measured the best they could. When I'd finish the paper, I joined the conversation, and the young girl takes an interest. Eventually she says something, and when the blokes hear her voice, you can instantly feel the change in the atmosphere. Eyes flying, asking silently. One mouths the question to me - Is it a man?? I signal - I don't know - and I don't care. The funny thing is the boys got ANGRY. With themselves, I believe! And each other? They felt stupid and ashamed. Boys will be boys, so the need to establish whom of them had been the MOST interested When the hierachy was established, they could direct their anger sat each other. It just came out as "friendly" teasing. She shifts to the seat next to me (safety) and we talked and had fun for an hour. So I tell my grown up son, I've made a trans friend. He asks her name. Let's call her Charlot. "Ahr, Mum. You know Charlot!" "That's what I'm telling you - I met her last night." "Come on! "he goes "Can't you remember the sleep over, when Michael and John was here?" I pretend to remember that specific one, out of hundred sleep overs. "Yah. But it's Michael, Mum!" "What's Michael?" "SHE is Michael. ...Eh... Well, just that she isn't- she was" Guess who was felling stupid then?? We were in stiches 🤣🤣 Charlot too, when I told her. Of course she knew who I am ALL the time, and forgave me that I hadn'ẗ recognized her.

Love this discussion and her story! ☀ Such an important topic and happy to hear she had such good support. The only thing I disagree she mentioned is the idea that not wanting to date a transgender person is transphobic. Of course I agree that it can definitely be the case that it's caused by transphobia. But I think there are a lot of factors involved that affects that decision. One example is wanting biological kids with your partner, which would be more difficult or even impossible with a transperson who has gone through hormone therapy or surgery. Of course you can adopt but I don't think it's a transphobic reason to not prefer that in a relationship. In addition, I’m a straight girl and for me sex is a very important part of a relationship. Having sex with a man with a vagina would not be enjoyable for me, as I'm attracted to the male sex. Ofc they could have gone through surgery and if I loved the person I would want to try it out and see what happens, but I disagree that is it’s just a ”preference” - it involves more than just looks ☺ (in my opinion) I think it's super important to be open minded, but in the end if it's not for you I also think it's fair.

The kid explanation can happen in cis-het relationships as well, where one of the partners might be infertile or them having a close to 0 chance of getting pregnant as a couple, the relationship might not survive... Personally i don't get the importance of being biological parrets, but also i had to deal with that question from the age of finding out that i am gay (15 ish) and had to dismantle the ideer of being in a cis-het nuclear family... About the gender and sex - I am not sure i would be able to be with a woman who still has her penis, though thats a big part of what i like sexually, a really good chest is too, I am still questioning myself if a man with a vagina and relationship could be plausible, that i have not found an definitely answer for, for me...

If you are then why not be open about it up front. If it's not an issue your partner will stay with you right? I think what shocks people is not that someone is trans: it's having had the decision taken away from you. And it's not a trivial choice because at the very least it implies you won't have biological children which for some people is a huge thing. And of course it implies a shit load of other things; like your partner suddenly being forced to confront their own sexuality and what it would mean to be with you, your partner would kind of come out of the closet in the sense it'll affect how everyone sees them, a closet they didn't even know they were in until you announced it to them. And it's a closet, the LGBTQ community is a big closet. Trans people have years to question their sexuality and come to terms with it and here you expect someone to do that work on the spot and adapt to your world? Someone that they felt wasn't up front? Of course people get shocked, you make it sound completely trivial as if a sex change is something you do like having your nails done. And please don't make it sound like it's only men who react to it. I can assure you that if Bob 45 had his change and becomes Maude, teenage girls, mothers etc would judge Maude perhaps even more harshly (think of their reaction finding out about Maude in certain settings like public bathrooms, open showers, babysitting, Kindergartens etc) Interestingly trans women have a way easier time attracting men than trans men have attracting women; a lot of guys nowadays will openly admit that some trans women look good, at least in the sense they got "fooled". Yet, straight men are generally seen as these entities who all hate and are terrified of trans people. Is it really the case though? Anyway: there's nothing wrong at all as long as you're honest about it from the beginning and that's the case for everything in s relationship thats worth sharing with your partner. Why wait until the person already has emotions for you making their decision so much harder to make? The egoistical part is what bothers people...

The big difference between the United States vs everywhere else is fairly simple, we have self determination, self reliance and individual independence. Now, the caveat to all this "freedom" is whether or not the populous is properly represented by their elected officials and if they educated themselves enough to fully understand the choices they make. The US was founded as a country made up of individual, sovereign states, united as a union that is governed by a congressional body, made up of representatives from each state that are chosen thru election by the citizens of that particular, sovereign state. To be part of this Union, each state, its representatives and its citizens must acknowledge the truth that there are certain rights that we are born with. If you are born of this world you should have freedom of speech, freedom to practice your religion, freedom to not have your person, your papers, your home searched without cause by a government official, freedom to bitch about, gather together on public property, and protest against the government for percieved flaws or issues the public feels should be addressed. There are many more very important rights as well but im trying to stay on topic. Our 10th amendment to our Constitution states badically, in my own words, that the individual, sovereign states must abide to, and protect their citizens access to, the freedoms and protections of the amendments of our Constitution and any other laws, ordinances, procedures, policies, etc, are up to the individual state and its citizenry to implement, get it? Each state and its citizens get to make up its own laws, procedures and methods of governence as long as they dont violate the birthrights laid out in our Constitutional amendments. So i am Trans and i live in California. California is a state where we have a rule for certain medical procedures and practices called "informed consent". Because of this rule, i can tell my doctor that i wish to start hormonal treatments to feminize my body and start the process to transition from male to female. All my doctor has to do is inform me of the risks and expectations of that process and then can perscribe me the hormones i need to begin that process. I dont need the governments permission. The government is not a doctor and shouldnt be involved in my personal, medical issues. That is between my doctor and me. Now other states say differently, as is that states right. Take the abortion ruling that has been mishandled by our supposedly free and unbiased media. The federal government has no right to interfere with a states right to ban or legalize abortion, hence the supreme (federal) court ruling. The federal government, thru the supreme courts original ruling on roe v wade, to "legalize" abortion thru all 50 states, was a direct violation of the 10th amendment, a states right to implement laws that fit its citizens desires. Here in California and in New York and many other states, abortion is still legal because the citizens of California wish it to be. But in other states like Texas, Utah, Wyoming, etc, abortion is not legal because that is what those citizens in those states want. If someone in Texas wants a abortion, they have to just go to another state. If they cant afford that there are private entities that will help facilitate the travel and whatnot is needed to get that person to a state where the orocedure can be done. If some adult individual doesnt agree with the laws of the state they live in, and they cant organize support to change that law, that adult person has the right to move to another state. If they cant afford it, oh well. Get a better job or network with others or whatever. Freedom doesnt mean easy. Freedom means freedom and sometimes its hard but we live in a country that guarantees your basic human freedoms for every citizen, not your personal ideas of freedom. I dont agree with so many of the laws here in California and i have the right to move, but i want access to my hormones without years of therapy so i stay and put up with it, its my freedom to choose and i choose to stay. Some here in Cdlifornia dont like abortion or legalized cannabis so they have the freedom to stay or move to a state that more suits their ideals. Thats freedom. In Sweden, you basically have to ask the government for permission to transition. That is not freedom. Every countries citizenry thinks they have freedom, or they are told by their government that they are free and they better not complain about it or off to the reeducation camp they go.

@@ditjedatje9741 That is not what "transphobic" mans; transphobia is when you are terrified of transgender individuals, and try to demonise them by spreading negative rumours about them. I have both family members and friends who view transgenderism as a bit "weird", but they still make sure to treat transgender individuals with normal decency. And yes, I know that Jordan Peterson has said that strangers "cannot force you to respect them" on multiple occasions; but he didn't mean that you are allowed to treat strangers like crap, he simply meant that there is no concrete reason to _look up to_ a stranger, since that stranger hasn't done anything to impress you, which is a much more accurate way to define "respect". There is a huge difference between being impressed by someone's talents and personal traits, and showing normal manners to people.

@@TainDK It's not that important. The thing though, is that the transgender thing is actually pretty unusual, that somebody wants to live as the opposite sex. I am against that they now are almost trying to convince kids that they probably should change sex .
