its sad too because the original did such a great job crafting story lines around real life topics like Will's dad abandoning him, Carlton and Will getting pulled over for no reason and Carlton refusing to believe he was profiled racially, and even the episode with the black fraternity trying to exclude Carlton because he wasn't "black enough". It was so nuanced and it spoke to every demographic.

@@MrChucklesGaming In "Will," out November 9, the star describes his dad as a man with dualities. "My father was violent, but he was also at every game, play, and recital. He was an alcoholic, but he was sober at every premiere of every one of my movies," he wrote, according to an excerpt highlighted by People magazine. He added: "The same intense perfectionism that terrorized his family put food on the table every night of my life." That terror is illustrated in a story Smith tells about when he was 9 years old and he watched his father "punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed." "I saw her spit blood," he writes. "That moment in that bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am." "As a child I'd always told myself that I would one day avenge my mother. That when I was big enough, when I was strong enough, when I was no longer a coward, I would slay him," he wrote. One day, he found himself pausing at the top of some stairs as he wheeled his father toward the bathroom and experienced a dark thought. "I could shove him down, and easily get away with it," he writes. "As the decades of pain, anger, and resentment coursed then receded, I shook my head and proceeded to wheel Daddio to the bathroom." No telling if this will make it past CommieTube's censors, but those are his own words according to CNN.

I learned that very quickly when I first went on various lefty websites a decade ago, back when they had comments enabled. They would freak out over any legitimate fact. None would refute it but they'd all pat each other on the back for spouting lies that are easily disproved. Citing any legit source that their leaders had told them was bad would get them all riled up too. It is good fun but saddening to know there are people that far gone who walk among us, and that was ten years ago.

Based on the source material The Fresh Prince was always woke. The difference is the show was from the 90's so it wasn't considered woke back then. It was just a show from a black perspective. @@LlibertarianGalt The main difference was the original show wasn't designed only for black people to relate to. I was a white kid watching the show when it first aired, and I never missed an episode. It spoke about racism and the problems black Americans face, but it didn't make the entire show all about that. It was first and foremost a show about entertainment, much like all shows used to be about. The difference is I won't be watching a show that demonizes white people instead of trying to bring everyone together in harmony like the original. Where are the shows that used to actually MEAN something when they brought up the harshness of reality? As a teenager, I loved watching Fresh Prince, but also Family Matters, Webster, Sister Sister, The Cosby Show, Smart Guy, and Hangin' With Mr. Cooper. ALL of those shows touched on the tough issue of racism, but NONE of them tried to demonize white people to the extent these newer activist shows do. Because racism was never as prominent with the average American family as people think it is today. And when they talked about it, people listened. The shows of today are only going to BREED more racism by convincing people that the stereotypes they see are true for everyone, and people will make snap judgements and distrust others because of them.

Interestingly enough, the original show explored some little discussed themes in the black community like: class differences in the black community (typically we like to pretend all our values are the same and that's false, different classes have different values), the idea of action/consequence (Will was punished by Uncle Phil quite a bit - justifiably so), healthy and unhealthy father/son relationships...so much. I'm sad the reboot became this. 😞

The irony is that the first episode directly contradicts one of the originals. In the OG series there was an episode where Carlton was abused by a fraternity and told he wasn't stereotypically black enough to join, he then stood up for himself and the lesson of the episode was it was wrong. Yet this new series did literally the opposite, it accused Carlton of not being black (but being 'rich' instead) literally reversing the theme of the OG episode

The worst part of this version of Hilary is that she has the stereotypical 'white privilege' the show says is bad. Not only did she have a 2 year gap year where she was fully supported by her parents. She had an opportunity given to her via nepotism, and turned it down because she was unwilling to meet their demands (And tbh, your employer having heavy input in your content is very standard). This is not a black experience. This is 'my parents are so rich that I can make bad decisions and still have it work out for me'.
@IzThatit
@IzThatit 2 жыл бұрын
I think the point missed is that that kind of privilege is attributed to white people as they tend to have 2 parent households with more generational wealth. Generational wealth is not very common in the black community. Hilary's character was meant to be the character who grew up in that rich white culture and assimilated into it so much that shit fit all the "dumb blonde" stereotypes. People are missing the point because they're so intent on focusing on how "woke" the show is despite the original show being woke...

I cannot watch this garbage show because I have hundreds of hours of emotional investment into the Fresh Prince series from growing up. That show was the Cosby Show of my generation who introduced black culture into lower/middle class white families' homes. Between Fresh Prince and the Steve Harvey show, I felt like there was actually somebody for everyone in the audience to relate with while still seeing new ideas and cultural differences (while still maintaining the sense of a unified American culture) and that's what made those shows so amazing.

The scene with Hilary's interview. Here is what pisses me off The show is trying to falsely imply a racist narrative The scene H - "I just cooked this for my family and they loved it." I - "your family I not our target demographic." The show is trying to imply the meant it sub-textually. Any normal person would know they are talking about her "FAMILY." Not the whole black population. But let's for argument sake they really mean "the 'black population.' As a whole. That is 13% of the population. Not a high percentage. They would want to reach as many home as possible. So they have to cater for Asians, Hispanic, white, black and all races. So havinh softer flavours is more accessible to everyone. All she had to do was insist on adding a footnote about (season to taste.) Anyone who has seen cooking show or read a cook book. Knows they add this prevision into the mixed for the reader's who like an extra bit of flavour.

The writers of this show missed a huge trick by not making Uncle Phil a staunch Republican. That would have created so many opportunities for genuine discussions about the US political divide. Will would instantly dislike Phil and think he's an "Uncle Tom", and Phil would think Will is stupid and naive. Over time as they get to know each other, they start to understand that they both have valid perspectives and can learn from each other. Phil realises he's out of touch with the lives and struggles of inner city black kids, and Will realises that Phil actually wants a better future for kids like him but has different ideas about how to achieve it. This could have been such a good way to try and bring people together and bridge the divide, but by the looks of it they wanted to pitch it purely as a black vs white thing. Shame.

In the OG series there was an episode where Carlton was abused by a fraternity and told he wasn't stereotypically black enough to join, he then stood up for himself and the lesson of the episode was it was wrong to judge him by stereotypes. Yet this new series did literally the opposite, it accused Carlton of not being black (but being 'rich' instead) literally reversing the theme of the OG episode

Good take! I want to throw out how ridiculous it was that Will ran away from the school security guard when the guard asked for his student ID. No questions asked he just ran because he had a flashback of when he was arrested by the cops for shooting a gun. In a time when so where people are shot by the cops because they escalated a situation by running away when they could’ve just complied I think they made a bad move in having Will run when he was stopped by the security guard. It’s just encouraging more young people to disregard authority and to run away from the cops under the guise that every cop is out to kill them. I was so mad when I saw that. Another missed opportunity to try to change the narrative. Now all young people who see this will continue to have the mindset that they don’t need to comply which will potentially put them in a more dangerous situation.

Some people run, some people come out swimming; others freeze, and very occasionally people actually use their heads & assess before reaching any conclusions. Do not judge others madness by your “sanity”, my guy, this take is just showing how much you don’t actually relate to real world. Want to be constructive with what you saying instead? I actually had a talk about coworkers with the n word issue and while I see their few of the n word being used for racist purposes against then, aka slavery, then taking it over to control the power and danger of that word, and now them using the word for themselves and not letting anyone not even their non black friends use that word they use every day as a power play makes them try to be in control.

Watching Post 2022 Oscars made me laugh really hard when talking about Will hitting a dude days after doing something and how do you justify Will being so angry about something.

Will's character just struck me as a dude with a massive chip on his shoulder. He's clearly someone who's been praised too much since birth (constantly called a 'king' by his mother, successful at everything from sports to academics). He constantly gets angry because of his pride (the whole basketball court affair was just his ego). SJW's probably think he's something to admire, but in reality he's an egotistical reflection of their whole movement and it's narcissistic rage

Let's take one of the most beloved comedy dramas of the 90s, which appealed to everyone of every race - and then take away the thing which made it so accessible to people and allowed it to promote positive social messages: the humour. Genius...🤮

If the fresh prince was released today instead of 30 years ago with the same script you would have said it was too woke as well.

I really like the show so far. I understand that it's not a supposed to be a present day remake of the Fresh Prince. The show uses most of the same characters from the 90's show but they all have adapted to the current era. Shout out to the B1 family!!!
